    Old days when the bodyworks had the same resistance of a digestive cookie

    Worked for an Austin Rover Dealer back in the 80s, and you could see the weak spots on the Metro the wings no wheel arch liners on the front wings. The Mini No underseal at all! Maestro and Montego so many exposed seams and thin underseal or non at all in places. (:

      No different now, I've got an 07 Fiesta, carpet, yes carpet for rear wheel arch liners! And no underseal on the spare wheel pan, exhaust tunnel, front bulkhead, under petrol tank, minimal underseal anywhere. I'm underneath regularly, wire brush on drill, red oxide, black hammerite, underseal, same as I was under a Metro or Mini in the 80s. I've got an 04 BMW Mini, same, bare metal underneath, rust breaking out round the rear lights, from inside out!

      @richardburns5925 look under most German cars VW, BMW and Mercedes. I'm a mechanic and I am stunned. Some of the new stellantis cars have no paint on the inner wings panels primer.

    Shame Austin rover got corrosion protection so wrong - metros maestros and Montego were bad for rust

    There are many great videos from the development of the Metro, really fascinating but what I find so surprising is, that despite all of this, they never seemed to have dealt with any of the potential issues with the design or corrosion protection. All of this testing and all electro-sealing and the cars still fell to bits?

    My 1984 Austin Metro was incredibly rusty. I hope it got better.

      @@simonspider I have heard stories like that from the manager at the Skoda garage when I get my Skoda Citigo (same size as my Austin Metro) serviced.

    every part of the video they show is every part of the metro that continued rusted . So basically they did all the research but thought never mind let's carry on building 🤣

    My metro is still going at 34 years old. Like with any car on the road, wash underneath as well as on top; floorpans, inside arches and wings, valances and inside door/bonnet/boot edges. Oh and don't use it in the wet! (If you do wash it underneath afterwards).

      I bet it has about 40k miles on the clock.

    A lot of people bringing up the point that these cars rusted after a short time. Well that was pretty standard for the day, the rust proofing was nowhere near what it is now. You have to remember we had cars like Lancia and Alfasud back then, which made the metros anti corrosion design look like it came from Audi.

    • @julianroberts5407
      @julianroberts5407 Рік тому

      Volvo took rustproofing seriously. In fact, even in the 70s and 80s, their cars far outlasted all competitors

    Yeh all this corrosion testing didn't stop my father's Metro from rusting on EVERY panel!!

      Recently I watched a top gear segment from 1991about used metros.
      Every owner interviewed had rust problems after only a few years. Indeed one lady, who had owned a 1988 model from new, was getting rust all over the car.

    cant believe all those sprayers with either no respirator or its worn under the chin where was health and safety at Austin rover ?

    • @Gavichap
      @Gavichap 3 роки тому +4

      Where? On strike, probably. The factory was ancient and anyway workers didn't care, and management as well.

    • @operator91210
      @operator91210 3 роки тому

      There was no health & safety anywhere. You know why you can't find a good body man to restore old cars anymore? Cause they all died from illnesses related to breathing in these chemicals without proper protection

    @steven-vn9ui 3 роки тому +1

    Never realised how much effort they put into it all. Seems really unfair that the cars still rusted out quite readily

    Test result: best corrosion in its class! Rule, Britannia! 🇬🇧

    Lol, they did the tests but didn't do anything about it 🤣

  • @insertnamehere5146
    @insertnamehere5146 3 роки тому +1

    They didnt need to do these tests. They only had to interview owners of their cars after 18 months

  • @Gavichap
    @Gavichap 3 роки тому +5

    Money and time-wasting "research" that smacks of publicity stunt. None of the issues were corrected at the production line, so the cars proved to rank among the rustiest models of the time. No wonder they went under.

    • @cambs0181
      @cambs0181 Рік тому +2

      Well this was all new innovation at the time. This started the engineering into anti corrosion, which led to cars today being almost completely rust proof. If you look at the cars of the 50s and 60s they were a hell of a lot worse in rotting.

  • @MrRetro-
    @MrRetro- 2 роки тому +1

    Austin Rover did not do a good job at much, especially rust protection, Metros were total rot box junk, as were montegos, & maestros, the rover 200 series and triumph acclaim were also made from wafer thin tin and rotted badly,
