A film would normally be mastered in 4k at best, and it's not uncommon for them to be mastered and delivered in 2k, most cinema projectors are still 2k and I bet you don't even notice. But there is a lot more that goes into it, which makes these cameras so expensive, such as recording in RAW (and red RAW is even compressed, which is all done in-camera!), or the colour science. Which isn''t even the best on the market, and most cinematographers tend to prefer the Arri Alexa line of cameras, which has much better colours and highlights, despite most models shooting in less than 4k. Oh, and lastly, you would usually RENT these cameras, not BUY them, unless you're a big production company that shoots everyday, or perhaps a film school.

Photographers own their gear - cinematographers rent it. Because of this - highest tear video cameras are are made in such low volumes, that marks up the price. Even more - there are cinema cameras that are so expensive, that you can't even buy them from manufacturer(like ARRI Alexa 65mm), but only rent from them.
How could that fact possibly make you angry? It is a win for Linus, the cinematographers, and Red. This camera will not be "wasted" because supply-and-demand ensures that Red will make another one. Yes, I would agree that the Weapon 8k S35 has no benefit to Linus over the Epic-W ($30,000), as the only difference is frame rates at 8k, but the fact that Linus can afford it, and that he wants to own badass film gear is enough to justify his purchase. My dad was telling me about the expensive camera equipment he just bought (it was a few thousand) and I sent him a link to one of Red's accessories. He's been doing this a while so he already knew about it, but I can see him having a heart attack if he hadn't known. The camera body is less than half of what you really need to spend to make it work. The lenses and accessories are what make this thing, well, stupid expensive. I'm actually shocked they only spent $160k for 2.

It's more than good, it's the best in the world, it's the equipment that will help make a big film, using the best actors that will raise hundreds of millions of dollars in profit, it has to be THE number 1 best video camera, if its not, the DVD wont also hit the shelves of stores or released in popular online stores. It's not a pricing issue. RED and companies alike make cinema cameras which are meant for professional productions like movies. With multi-million dollar budgets, camera equipment accounts for less than 5% of the total budget. This means that productions are willing to throw immense amounts of money for high-quality cameras; therefore the camera companies are able to jack the prices up.
Which in turn funds RED's R&D department so they can produce better cameras down the road. The onus is still on Linus for this one; he said so himself that no one has an 8k display (yet), and even if they did, would they really think to themselves that watching Linus Tech Tips in 8k was worth the investment?
agreed. many UA-camrs use RED for their "UA-cam Crispyness" - how about getting an Alexa Mini to shoot your "crispy goodness"? But nooooooo. they want to shoot 8K in RED RAW and downres to 4K Rec709. These cameras are meant to sit in a cinema production house somewhere, shooting at 8K and being graded down to 2K. They're supposed to mount CP2s and CP3s, but noooo, youtubers use them with Canon L lenses and rave all about how expensive they are and how they need more storage to handle all the 8K crispyness. /facepalm.
For best quality you have to record in a higher resolution (8K) than the aimed resolution (4K), because editing and especially special effects have a destructive property (you lose visual information) when applied to your original footage. That's what I remember from my 3D-2D Art semester, and it's quite true when photoshoping pictures.

I can see why it's useful to the group. Having 8K video means you can have masses of flexibility when you edit. You can crop in 2x and get a free digital zoom, which makes for a lot of flexibility on the final product. You get the ability to fully adjust colour and tweak brightness in post. But honestly, UA-camrs buying these things seems redundant to me. The quality of UA-cam is constantly declining thanks to their compression - which was basically the reason for Linus going 4K anyway, so he could claw back a bit of that lost to compression.
That's not what dynamic range is at all. Depth of field is totally different and unrelated to the amount of dynamic range a camera has. DR is about capturing scenes with extra information that gives you the option to change colour balance and exposure in post.
You can be certain Linus, Luke and Brandon had several *long* discussions about the benefits and drawbacks of making this move before committing. Linus knew exactly how much it would cost. He's just expressing his outrage to the world here. Seriously though, I agree with him. Those accessories are just OUCH.

The Signtronix price list is the Optec price list with a literal 0 added to the end of every part price, they didnt even modify the Optec part numbers. Signtronix uses the low end spec of Optec's lines. So you get a mediocre sign at a fantastic finance rate, but you pay an extra 0 for materials on any maintenance thereafter - and that's prior-to the contractor's markup. But the tl:dr is that in order to save 50% of the storage capacity on a video recording, video cameras throw out 3/4ths of the color data and average the color between blocks of 4 pixels while keeping all the brightness data. This makes the videos appear almost as good as the raw footage, but it gives the massive advantage of being half the size. However, if you have a 4k camera recording 4 times the color data and 1 4th is thrown out when scaled down to 1080p it looks like a perfect raw 1080p picture. This is why old analogue footage actually looks BETTER most modern digital images. Pretty much you'll get better color and contrast even on a lower res monitor. Also this gives them a lot more freedom when editing as zoomed in footage will still look amazing.

My dad was telling me about the expensive camera equipment he just bought (it was a few thousand) and I sent him a link to one of Red's accessories. He's been doing this a while so he already knew about it, but I can see him having a heart attack if he hadn't known. The camera body is less than half of what you really need to spend to make it work. The lenses and accessories are what make this thing, well, stupid expensive. I'm actually shocked they only spent $160k for 2.

Steamrick maybe, but is it worth it over 4K? In my opinion it probably isn't. Maybe in 10+ years it would be worth while. I do get that they are likely purchasing for quality improvement, maybe just 4K even, but there has to be better priced options for 4K.

It's more than good, it's the best in the world, it's the equipment that will help make a big film, using the best actors that will raise hundreds of millions of dollars in profit, it has to be THE number 1 best video camera, if its not, the DVD wont also hit the shelves of stores or released in popular online stores. Theres quite a gap between Hollywood and UA-camr

@@shravanns9474 tbh, it is arguably one of the best video cameras in the world and is use in multi-million dollar films. Captain Marvel was filmed using one. Film studios usually rent those cameras anyway. $100k for a movie which grosses >$1,000,000,000 isn't that much.

As a mechanical engineer specializing in materials selection I can tell you that the manufacturing processes and cost of materials for those accessories is nowhere near as much as they’re charging for it, unless they are using the most backwards, unnecessary way of manufacturing ever and the materials are being imported from Saturn by a magical unicorn made of gold.

It's not a pricing issue. RED and companies alike make cinema cameras which are meant for professional productions like movies. With multi-million dollar budgets, camera equipment accounts for less than 5% of the total budget. This means that productions are willing to throw immense amounts of money for high-quality cameras; therefore the camera companies are able to jack the prices up.
Which in turn funds RED's R&D department so they can produce better cameras down the road. The onus is still on Linus for this one; he said so himself that no one has an 8k display (yet), and even if they did, would they really think to themselves that watching Linus Tech Tips in 8k was worth the investment?

But nooooooo. they want to shoot 8K in RED RAW and downres to 4K Rec709. These cameras are meant to sit in a cinema production house somewhere, shooting at 8K and being graded down to 2K. They're supposed to mount CP2s and CP3s, but noooo, youtubers use them with Canon L lenses and rave all about how expensive they are and how they need more storage to handle all the 8K crispyness.

For best quality you have to record in a higher resolution (8K) than the aimed resolution (4K), because editing and especially special effects have a destructive property (you lose visual information) when applied to your original footage. That's what I remember from my 3D-2D Art semester, and it's quite true when photoshoping pictures.

I can see why it's useful to the group. Having 8K video means you can have masses of flexibility when you edit. You can crop in 2x and get a free digital zoom, which makes for a lot of flexibility on the final product. You get the ability to fully adjust colour and tweak brightness in post.
But honestly, UA-camrs buying these things seems redundant to me. The quality of UA-cam is constantly declining thanks to their compression - which was basically the reason for Linus going 4K anyway, so he could claw back a bit of that lost to compression.
That's not what dynamic range is at all. Depth of field is totally different and unrelated to the amount of dynamic range a camera has. DR is about capturing scenes with extra information that gives you the option to change colour balance and exposure in post.
You can be certain Linus, Luke and Brandon had several *long* discussions about the benefits and drawbacks of making this move before committing. Linus knew exactly how much it would cost. He's just expressing his outrage to the world here.
Seriously though, I agree with him. Those accessories are just OUCH.

true story, in the LED sign industry: Optec supplies the parts for Signtronix signs. The Signtronix price list is the Optec price list with a literal 0 added to the end of every part price, they didnt even modify the Optec part numbers. Signtronix uses the low end spec of Optec's lines. So you get a mediocre sign at a fantastic finance rate, but you pay an extra 0 for materials on any maintenance thereafter - and that's prior-to the contractor's markup. Not saying that someone else produces Red's equipment, just that your comment prompted that thought :)

But the tl:dr is that in order to save 50% of the storage capacity on a video recording, video cameras throw out 3/4ths of the color data and average the color between blocks of 4 pixels while keeping all the brightness data. This makes the videos appear almost as good as the raw footage, but it gives the massive advantage of being half the size. However, if you have a 4k camera recording 4 times the color data and 1 4th is thrown out when scaled down to 1080p it looks like a perfect raw 1080p picture. This is why old analogue footage actually looks BETTER most modern digital images.
Pretty much you'll get better color and contrast even on a lower res monitor.
Also this gives them a lot more freedom when editing as zoomed in footage will still look amazing.

All the money they spent on these cameras was thrown down the drain; even 4k barely looks better than 1080 unless your monitor is huge (and is irrelevant on TVs), and 8K is just another step in that same pointless direction.
