Nigel thank you for making and uploading all these videos. Your channel has become a daily enjoyment for me, I've even started a couple of trees going. Cheers from Greece!
Hey Nigel! Just wanted to say when you pushed the tree towards the camera around the 15:55 mark, it gave us much better look at the details you’re talking about! Enjoyed it very much
You did a great job trimming that juniper. I only wish you would let someone do to that ur head of hair! I think you would look great with a buzz, tight on the sides and reduced on the top. 😂
honestly thats a gorgeous tree... i just picked up a half dead nursery cyprus to make over into... well... any actual bonsai person would laugh at me, but its a learning process!
Clip and grow with juniper will take 100 years. Juniper lends well to wiring. I recommended even beginners to wire shape in to junipers before refining. You’ll save decades.
No it won't, the tree grows just as fast if you wire or not. Wiring tends to create spaghetti shaped branches with loose un-natural curves. I prefer clip and grow trees, they tend to look more miniature!
It's surely worth more than 12 dollars now! I'm looking forward to its development. Rocks would surelly suit the planting. I like the right side (22:52), too. Looks like a nice informal upright s-shape with good taper!
@@TheBonsaiZone Hi Nigel, if you clip your hair you will become a twin brother of Richard Gere. Wow !! How you look so much like the actor Richard Gere, but not with that topknot. Hahahaha I'm serious!!!
You refer to probably being able to root cuttings for the juniper. Yes they can be rooted. if you take them at the right time of the year, they are quite successful. I don't knwo whether or not this is the right time of the year.
You know, instead of a jin, what about a shari on the windward side of that branch? You could then easily direct the remaining growth in the right direction. IMO, of course.
Hey Nigel have you seen the cedar stands of the northwest US? They apparently grow on top of each other and fallen trees! I wonder if you can do a root over wood/planks with cedars?!
I bought a similar for only 2 euro... Sadly the label said: conifer. So, can't say exactly which one I got. It grows low to the ground though... So it's probarbly a different one then yours. Liked this video a lot, tnx!
Hi everyone, I am new in the bonsai zone and I really would like to buy a young juniper...BUT yhere is sooo much species and the Chinensis/itoigawa are so difficult to find or really expensive for nothing... I really don't which species to choose, Im so lost. Blaauws ? chinensis stricta ? Sabina? Pfitzeriana? blue alp? blue chip ? You see there is soooo much and I cant choose the right one to begin which I would like to keep until my last breath :))... I would greatly appreciate a little help from UA-cam :) By the way, Thank you Nigel Saunders for the videos on your channel :)
When you repot will you bare root your Juniper? I've heard that junipers might not do so well with being bare rooted, but I don't think I've ever watched you do a re pot where you didn't? Do you think coniferous species can be bare rooted?
I’m in the UK and as long as your juniper is healthy they survive bare rooting very well in my experience. The aftercare is essential to make sure they bounce back well though. Keep well watered and in partial shade - a greenhouse is ideal :)

im excited for you and your juniper too.. it already looks great.. it would look even greater if you put a drunk skeleton cowboy dead amongst its rocks
Only Nigel would attempt to do a windswept juniper without wiring! 🤯If anyone can do it you can! Yeah I'm worried about the weather here in the mid atlantic (US) too. Supposed to be 97 today, and I have a 12 hour shift at work. I moved all my weaker plants inside this morning, but I'm still worried. Wish me luck guys!
@@The_Dodge_Meister but junipers are ok with wire and it helps to form the desired style, instead of cutting. I don't wire deciduous trees, and my only pine, 'cuz they grow fast and it could hurt the bark.
@@The_Dodge_Meister In the nature the tree is not only losing the branches what is mimicked by pruning, but also exposed to wind, and that factor can be reflected by wiring.
@@smathtegginmath8395 :) I think we all know Nigel's principles. In fact, I'm a bit suprised that he decided to do fukinagashi, where the poor tree is plagued by cruel nature.
It’s really cool that you primarily develop using clip and grow. But with the vision you have of this tree being a windswept juniper I’d rather you hold onto that artistic view and bring it forth using some wire as necessary- it’s okay to be clip and grow 99.99. Trying clip and grow with a juniper with a plan of windswept. I’d just hate for you to abandon your artistic structure you have planned for this tree ❤️❤️

A cracking tree that Nigel. Definitely one which is only going to get better as the years pass.

very nice little tree. We also have a hot weekend ahead in Germany, with no rain in sight. Hope all my trees make it.
That is one cool looking trunk on this tree and the pruning did it justice.
You did a great job trimming that juniper. I only wish you would let someone do to that ur head of hair! I think you would look great with a buzz, tight on the sides and reduced on the top. 😂
Good morning. I love junipers
Great video, thanks Nigel. Time for me to visit my juniper of similar size.
I bought a $25 Grey Owl Juniper at Lowe's and found these videos very helpful. Thanks Nigel!
Fantastic!
Devinately better! All that is needed I quess is vision and time...that does it,really.
They come along quickly, when you know what you are doing! :D
At a repot, would you consider changing the potting angle, raising the trunk and right hand side to give a more windswept appearance? Great styling
Nigel saves a lot of money by not buying wires. 😄 I actually have a number of trees that I don't want to wire. They look natural and quite nice.
Great job on your $12 Juniper
You have a lot of beautiful trees.
Yay, super excited to see your juniper develop! Tams are funny little things, definitely.
They are!
Very peaceful. Helps me relax.

Hello Nigel, how to you get that beautiful moss on the soil?
12 bucks? now a lot more for sure!! neat little tree Nigel
Yes they grow from cuttigs, takes more time than other trees but they root very well

Ha! You both got nice hair cuts!
Good job and I think you are wise to wait on creating Jin as it should be made more moderate than it often is IMHO.
I've tried growing a nana juniper with cuttings but i doubting if it's successful because i still don't see some roots inside my clear container.
Juniper cuttings root ez for me but it can take up to a year to get roots

Taking more then 30% of the "leafs" off a juniper will sometimes make the tree grow young leafs and not the nice leafs
