Creating Stone Wall Effects With Hatching

- Rough stone blocks are a great subject for trying to capture the visual effect of an object - demanding variability and creativity in the marks we use to draw them. This demo gives one possibility of this, but also includes a copy of the line outline on the channel Community Page for you to screen shot abd have a go yourself at the hatching without having to draw first. Why not do several and experiment? This is excellent learning practice.

Great subject love the way hatching provides contrast. Like the way you structured the drawing of the dry stone wall. Many thanks.
Thanks David. Much appreciated 😀
Glad you mentioned the thoughts about which “direction” of hatching lines. It’s something that confuses me, and I think it’s something I should try on small excercises, rather than making mistakes on an actual picture! Thanks.
It is a confusing topic for me as well. There are so many rules and exceptions. For example the rule is to follow the form but too regular hatches are boring too.
@@paweljankiewicz1383 thanks. Yes hatching the ‘formk of the object… The way it “flows or grows” seems to be the key :)
Ssssseettttt isss rieeeeehly neeeiiizzzz
Thaaaaaaanks
Beautiful work man! The upper left section brought it all together, I love how simple that background became while also not the "ok now rush the background" feeling that can happen sometimes. As for the star of the show... the very simple waves of lines that show us all those cool rocks. "The softest thing in the world rushes and runs over the hardest..." ✌
So helpful..thank you
You are so welcome!😀
I liked what I just learned with this video. I do a lot of sketching and the marks I put in are done a bit differently. I tend to cross-hatch (#) a lot to get my darker values as opposed to marking parallel lines closer and closer together. Really a great little sketch. Thanks for this.
In my next video I cross hatching a lot to get really dark values. You might be interested in checking it out. Thanks for sharing 😀
The way that you rendered the curved stone on the right is really beautiful. Thank you for this video. I understand rendering a bit better due to your explanation
Nice subject, Where do you get these reference photo?
My channel Community Page. Go to my channel homepage and on the top ribbon menu scroll left to you see Community on the right hand side.
Oh, misunderstood. They are all mine. I take them as I walk around😀
This is such a great idea, never thought about drawing a stone wall precisely. The way you described every plane… I would have gone more loosely but this looks like a fantastic exercise. :) I have been drawing for four years on my own and even though I have improved I feel like I’m plateauing and my line remains shaky and insecure. Do you recommend anything to improve your line quality?
@@InkNSap hi. I tend to practice my line work on scrap paper. I often just put random dots on the paper at different distances appart (say eight dots or so) and then practice joining them together (separately….from all directions) It helps build confidence.
@@justmejhbmed9778 I need to make this a daily practice! I have done it but it falls out of my routine. Thank you for the reminder!
Wow, where do you get these reference from? I'm asking coz I'm good at drawing what I see than, drawing from imagination.
I take them myself. On the lookout as I go for walks or travelling 😀
That’s why I can let you draw them. I own the copyright 😀
rock needed to be more bigger than you did in the painting. painting was too small to understand hatching lines clearly.😪
Couldn’t you zoom the screen a bit? Make it look larger? I’m sorry it didn’t work for you. 😀
@@stephentraversart this idea didn't cross in my mind at that time. that could have been a good trick. 😁👍
