THEY HAVE DONE THIS JUST ONE TIME - The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad ran their Steam Engine #1702 the full length of this 67 Mile, super scenic, N.C. Short line, the old SRy Murphy Branch.
Pulling a special excursion for the HISTORIC SPENCER SHOPS, the colorful GSMR train ran from Dillsboro, through Bryson City, over Fontana Lake, along the recreation center at the spectacular Nantahala Gorge, up the steep 4.5% Topton Mountain grade, and straight through Andrews to Murphy.
Video Includes extensive trackside footage as well as Cab Rides, tender top views, and both auto and GP7 Pacing (Videography from the GP7, at times it ran just 200+ feet ahead of the 1702). Believe it or not, we “talked” with the engine crew as we paced the 1702 from our car - you’ll see it.
This may be the last ever steam trip to the far reaches of Western North Carolina. Care was taken to capture key points and numerous unique scenes. Great Railroading! Great Mountain scenery! Great Video!

I really miss that Illinois Central 6 Chime. It’s my favorite whistle she’s ever worn.
Me too benson, me too..
You said it Ben this is my favorite rendition of the locomotive because it’s how I remember it when I was a boy
I liked the 6 chime too
This Is Great Watching The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Consiladation's GSMR #1702 The Entire Trip Was Sponsored By Historic The Spencer Shops And Expect For The Two Miles Leaving Murphy Will Be Lead By the 1702 The Entire Way So Sit Back and Enjoy The Views of A Great American Steam Train 😊😊😊 🚂🚂🚂
GSMR Really ran this engine hard back then. Ive never heard 1702 drown out her whistle like she does here
I rode in 1702's cab on August 18, 2017. I got to help out as a guest fireman running the water injector, sanding the flues, checking boiler pressure, water level and even doing bell ringing.
@GreenFrogVideos Thank you for sharing.
YES!!! FINALLY! I've been waiting for this release for a very long time! I'm glad to see it out and available! Cheers all! (BTW, No. 1702 is a consolidation, not a mikado).
Thanks for pointing this out, it has been corrected!
8:35 GSMR 1702’s Illinois Central 6 Chime
This railroad is the first one I ever rode on, rode it 3 times before my teen years (2004, 2005, 2008) and again shortly after 1702 was brought back to service in 2016 and the last time I was along the railroads route I watched one of there trains leave dillsboro behind 1702 in 2018 while heading to ashville NC
Awesome, hope you enjoy the video clip!
@@GreenFrogVideos I do, but does it have sound ?
@@RailPreserver2K Absolutely, you are hearing the sound in this AD clip we posted!
@@GreenFrogVideos oh okay, I wasn't trying to upset y'all, when I watched it shortly after it was uploaded it was muted for some reason but I'm watching it now and yes it does have sound
@@RailPreserver2K No Worries at all, enjoy the video!
Whatever happened to the valley river???
What happened to the original Illinois central chime whistle? I wish 1702 had it again, I grew up with it
I believe it was sold to the NCTM
My 6 chime might be stored away maybe
@@ToritheGSMR1702-mz3rc please stop…
@@ToritheGSMR1702-mz3rc it was stolen
@@Ian-qs3fzI know right, these little kids with their cringe train ocs and acting like trains on platforms is so cringe and annoying. "My Whistle" like bruh shut up.
This is the first Consolidation I've ever seen with a pair of shielded air pumps up front. Looks and sounds great, but all the nonsensical whistle tootling dives me bonkers (I know they do it for the tourists, but the grade crossing signals, at least, should be kept pure, inmho). Good video. (I bought my first Green Frog video back in the 1990s---on VHS! Now have my favorites on DVD, played on a Blur-ray machine.) Stay safe.
Thanks for watching, and we appreciate your business and support over the years!
Now the line to andrews and Murphy are wasting away
I wonder if 1702 can visit the NCTM in Spencer, NC one day?
That would be really nice! Also, what if the GSMR donated 722 to the NCTM?
@@BenBensonStudios Yeah perhaps.
@@BenBensonStudios like seeing 722 back at TVRM. Actually this wouldn be a bad idea. Trade K&T 10 for SRR 722. IMHO
@@brianfalzon6739 that wouldn’t be a bad idea.
@@nicholasmedovich6729 yeah, but what about TVRM 610, she hasn't been running for a long time!
It's called Red Marble Grade not Topton Mountain.
