- Launched in June 2020, Yamaha's HelmMaster EX (expandable) uses a new, electronic steering unit to deliver GPS spot locking abilities to a single outboard rig.
Compatible for all Yamaha digitally controlled outboards from 150HP and upwards, the system is modular and expandable past the initial helm/steering/control purchase.
You can add Yamaha's own proprietary autopilot unit and the jewel in the crown, the joystick steering unit.
Retailing at around $20,000AUD for the entire setup, HelmMaster EX will be available from Yamaha dealers around August, 2020.
I completely disagree with the comments about doubling your maintenance cost. I go in saltwater only, fish cruise whatever, and my motor is NEVER turned off. As a matter of fact, I see with this system that the motor will not have to work as hard "Keeping on Spot" as I have to do it manually. I see no extra hours being used than what I already use, I do see my motor not having to work as hard and for me, that is a plus. Great job Yamaha!
Great innovation from Yamaha. My boat is on the limits of what a 36v electric can handle so I would prob stick that. If only servicing intervals and resale considerations of motors were based on work done, not hours... 100 hours of intermittent idle in and out of gear is not the same as 100 hours of 5500rpm... the capability is there to log this. I would estimate my usage of engine hours to electric hours for a standard trip to be in the order of 1 is to 3. So I would be tripling my servicing costs per year to approx $2,000 per year. Add to that increased depreciation of the motor...
Interesting train of thought - what does your current graph look like? I'd assumed that ours would me most time at WOT, since that's how I drive it. Surprisingly, most of our time was at idle. 🤷🏼♂️
@@FishingMonthly probably a lot like yours based on what you're saying lol
You prolly dont give a shit but does someone know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost the password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Ellis Joel Instablaster :)
@Houston Korbin thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
From a Recreational fishing POV with boats in the 5 to 8m range. It adds roughly $20k for the complete setup including joystick here in Australia. That adds some serious coin to a build. Probably running a minn kota for spot lock in the deep would be a more economical option. Depending on size of boat of course. Plus I'm a little sceptical about the engine hours and the insane amount of work the steering rams has to do over hours of holding a spot lock. Wear and tear. Obviously there will be situations which benefit and those with deep pockets. But the rec fishman, it's a spendy $$$ luxury
What happens if electric helm goes wrong for any reason. Is there a way to switch back to mechanical steering? It doesnt look like you have the option for this. I think this can be a very serious safety issue if the control goes wrong. I would not be comfortable especially relying the steering on electronic in marine environment.
Why don’t we have an independent Yamaha powered mini propeller that works like Minn Kota but more powerful? Would love to see this option that can beat Minn Kota
Yamaha definitely produce good engine, I hope it can be as compact as Mercury.
Dam that looks epic.
How good is this for docking the boat when there's side wind/current? I've been boating for 6 years and I still suck at putting the boat back into my slip. So I am really looking for something that can help me dock the boat single-handed.
Do you need a wind sensor? How does it know the wind direction?
How do you change lock to lock steering ratio.
Looks impressive but is there any way you could do this in a real world or at least realistic setting. No one I know spotlocks with a 150 plus in the river in very mild conditions. Would seriously like to see it work in even just 10-15kts open ocean.
We can only film in the window we are given. I’m sure that we will get access to one for a longer period at some stage in the future.
Did anyone else get excited when they saw this? Only to see the price is half the price they paid for their boat? SMH don't see it being worth it for most singles, if it was like 2-3k maybe, don't understand how it can cost that much
That looks awesome, but I agree with R P, at a absolute minimum you would be doubling your hours used per year.
So if you take into account the cost of the system, the loss of value of your outboard from all the hours and all the rest of it, no matter how amazing that technology is, its a hard pill to swallow.
Unless on the other hand you have very deep pockets, then this is the system for you!!!
Isn't that all of boating? Who buys a boat as as asset?
What if you have bow thrusters. How does the joystick work, in conjunction?
Does it allow you to troll speed, making the use of a kicker, unnecessary?
Looks mint but a bit pricey
Who would be confident to sleep a night far offshore with this system being on watch.
Bring on another thousand 😂😂
Bring on another $20,000!
and only 5 billion dollars!
How can a poor fisherman afford this shit
Just try to work harder 😁😁
