- ✎ My humble attempt, nearly 20 years late, to make the most complete tribute to the single, BEST, redemption arc for a character, EVER, I've witnessed in any show/movie, animated or live action, in less then one episode of his show. mic drop 🎤
NOTES: This video is native 1080p but a trick I read to negate YT's horrible compression at that level is to render it higher rez anyway. So 4K is just less compressed 1080p. Please use it, and headphones!

Zuko deserves it; he's seriously one of the greatest characters ever written. I was completely blown away watching it for the first time in January. I see why people love the show.

Originally, my plan was to have this vid ready around Feb 22 when the Live Action adaption released, but at that time I was maybe mid-way through weaving just the dialogue together, and I still had to go back and re-edit the visuals for this 18 min long vid. There was no way, nor was I gonna rush this unexpected passion project.
Ya see, I am also an VFX artist, so it's natural that I should watch this show thats all about the elements: air, water, earth, fire. Kinda a requirement you might say. However, I am not an anime fan at all; most anime stories are weird, gory and I never cared for the look to be frank (I know, sorry to hurt some of y'all. Its just not my style.) So, it's no wonder this nearly 20 year old show never caught my eye in the beginning.
However, everything changed when I saw the live action trailers and the bending VFX looked rad! I mean bending elements? That is VFX heaven! But I knew I should probably watch the animated show before the LA so I made a point after New Years to watch it on Netflix.
So I did. And it was slooooowwww in the beginning! I was NOT into it at all. I didn't like Zuko much either; he just seemed like your typical, arrogant, selfish, self-important, antagonist. But then he's paired with his sweet uncle Iroh who quite humorously puts up with this guy. WHY?? I needed to know. So I hung on. People love this show I needed to understand why.
Gradually as the writers sprinkled hints along the way of his true character, his past, his contrasted relationship to his sister, I started looking forward to it each night and each ep with Zuko, and somewhere in the second season I was hooked. Don't get me wrong, I also grew to love the rest of the characters and seeing them develop, but Zuko & Iroh had definetly stolen my heart; they truly carried the show!
I finished it in about 3 weeks! (2 weeks on book 1 and about a week for books 2-3 lol) It helps that its a short series. But something was wrong with me, I couldn't rest, I couldn't stop thinking about Zuko. I mean his arc completely took me by storm! Whats crazy was I knew beforehand he turned good because I've seen little clips here and there in some of ya'lls vids over the years. I just didn't know how, or why, or when it happened. I was expecting him to have this cheap change of heart somewhere in the middle like most kids cartoons, but instead I got this deeply conflicted guy, that fails over and over and OVER. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, but at the same time, you as the viewer know its wrong what he's doing, and whats impressive is HE knows it deep down too, he's just not ready to admit it yet....which makes the pay off soooooo rewarding! Every choice he makes is so believable at each stage of his journey, and I love how the writers spent so much time fleshing him out, particularly his atonement with each of the gang and gaining their trust. That had to be believable and most shows don't pull that off very well or even take that time too. Then when Zuko asks for forgiveness from his uncle......I WEEP every time!! 😭
I think Zuko's whole arc is also such a beautiful illustration of Christ's unconditional love for us. No matter how messed up we think we are, or number of times we've failed, addictions we can't shake, or messed up our family might be..... God loves us and is willing to forgive you but only if you're willing. That's why Iroh is so lovable! Granted he's no saint, but he loves Zuko and wants what is best for him. Iroh gently tries to guide Zuko to do the right thing but never forcing him. He will fiercely protect Zuko when in serious trouble. He lets him make mistakes and have his free will and it causes such agony along the way watching, and despite Zuko betraying him, Iroh still accepts him with open arms. Thats unconditional love right there folks! I just can't get over it!
I could write a 18 page essay on this but im not a writer. I watched a ton of character analysis vids on Zuko but this one sums it up best for why I love him so much. He's a lot like one of the most impactful stories in the Bible to me and that's the parable of the parodical son. There was only one way I knew to get this guy out of my mind. EDIT HIM!! And I knew exactly what song I wanted to use: Tessa. I'm sure many of you SW fans have seen this vid by @Heroes Fan Productions ua-cam.com/video/wk0bRElYuXk/v-deo.html
First time I heard that song I wanted to edit it with something too but I needed the right character.....I finally found him! ZUKO!!! Believe it or not, originally, I planned to edit just an 8 min vid of Zuko to just Tessa, but I didn't get very far before realizing that wasn't going to happen. But finding songs that told the rest of the story and matched the epicness of Tessa was not going to be easy. I spent two full days listening to scores on UA-cam before landing on 3 additional tracks that I felt could work.
From there it was just a matter of laying down the narrative framework with the dialogue. This was important to tell the story since I didn't have lyrics like I normally do to guide the vid. Once the VOs were set, I went through a second pass to edit the visuals to match what was happening in the dialogue and parallel things. Then a third pass fine tuning any audio that felt too soft or too loud or not overlapping properly. From there I put it into the only AI tool that is actually useful to remove the background score in the avatar clips. Finally, the last step which is oddly my least favorite, is polishing everything up: tweaking masks, color, text, rendering, making the thumbnail, and writing this dang long description.

Okay, but Fury, can we just admire how you edited a 17 MINUTE LONG video? While the footage is not even 1080x1920, so you had to crop them all too? The amount of time and work is INSANE. Knowing I take 2 hours for a 45-60 seconds video, then I can't even GUESS how long this took you. It's absolutely stunning, this is flawless!
Yeah I just come out of nowhere with this behemoth vid. I can't explain it either; it just happened. Can't stoke the fire of unbridled emotions for this show/character, ahehehe.
I had difficult time figuring out the best way to crop it or even IF I should and just leave it 4:3 aspect ratio. Didn't get far in before changing my mind and switching back to good old 1080p. This took about two months....considering I could spend months and even years on shorter vids, this seemed like record time editing. Thanks for commenting and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, Zuko's arc is one of the most incredible tales ever! Him seeming like a selfish prince, but struggling so much to just be accepted by his father. His trials were some of the harshest things, but he kept going, he kept trying. And when he finally got what he wanted, he realized how hollow it was. That he wasn't truly himself. How he was able to find true peace and happiness from those he perceived as his enemies. How Aang went from being his target, to being his best friend.
Every word, every dialogue you chose, it blends together so perfectly! I'd be here even longer if I went over every detail I love. So to keep it simple, I'll just say it hit me from start to finish! As beautifully emotional as it was, you still added in some humor. "Just a teenager" and "She's crazy and needs to go down" always make me laugh. Zuko confronting his father is one of the best moments! And dang! 18 minutes! Girl, I've quoted what Hiccup said before, and I'll quote it again! YOU NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE ME!

Yeah, I think what really stood out to me was that he didn't come to that realization till AFTER he got what he wanted but by then it seemed too late. I didn't see how they could make his redemption seem genuine or believable at that point, but they did! And I love parallels in my fandoms, like how Zuko and Aang are both chosen ones in a way with how the war started and ended. Its blown my mind honestly all the parallels in the show!
Hehehe, Im glad you caught some of the humorous moments! I laughed quite a lot in the show, especially with Iroh and Zuko in the beginning and wanted to have a little of that here too.
I know 18 mins, just sedate me; I got obsession issues! 😅 I didn't originally plan it that long, it was supposed to be just the first song, Tessa, but it wasn't going to fit right and do him justice. Plus, I just didn't see many fan vids out there that fully encompassed his whole arc and I'm like, I HAVE TO MAKE THIS!!! There is actually a market for atla content and not as much out there of it compared to other fandoms. I relied heavily on others fan vids though since I had only watched the show once. It was hard finding some clips.

This year was my first time watching 'Avatar the Last airbender' as well, at least the full show. Cuz I remember vagually catching some of the episodes here and there in the Norwegian dub, but I sadly never understood the whole plot. Now that I do, I understand why so many people love these characters. The story of Zuko's redemtion might be one of the highlights.
Wow its cool we both decided to watch it for the fist time this year! Did the Live action have anything to do with prompting you to watch it? Thats what happened to me. Then this was born from my admiration for Zuko! I just can't get over how well developed he is. Very satisfying!
@@theNightFuryfan95 Yeah I think the live action version might have been part of the reason why I finally watched it. I knew I watched some of the original show back then and I have always seen small clips here and there without knowing the references, so I thought I might as well.
- I have also always heard arguments for this show being anime or not, so I think the curiousity of that might be part of it too. Which is ironic cuz I am not really a fan of the genre anymore, all I'm gonna say is that I personally think this show is better than most anime from Japan, today.
I think I ended up loving almost all of the characters in this show, but if I had to choose favorites, Zuko Toph, Aang and Iroh would probably be my first picks.
Btw you mentioned the Netflix version, did you watch it?

Amazing and so long!! It beats my 12 minute one that I did with TP (that I'm considering remaking once again because of this video lol!) Especially now that voiceovers are so much easier to add in without distracting music in the background. The VOs here are so clear and easy to understand, and the vid itself is just so moving and powerful and well edited. Thank you for making me want to rewatch and finish this show! I think it got a little too intense for me at one point so I stopped, but now that I'm older I think I could handle the intense parts better. Amazing tribute to an amazing character!
Haha, I remember thinking 12 mins was sooo long, but I guess I've gotten into watching longer vids particularly from SW so a part of me really wanted to try and do one too. If it wasn't for that AI tool to remove the background audio it wouldn't be worth it; you should have heard this originally before removing the OG scores. It was not good. That tool is a game changer!

Okay I know some of the dialogue for Iroh was taken from when his voice actor Mako did splinter in the '07 Turtles movie & I love that
I only took VOs from this show, but I did not know that. Very interesting. I also recently watched through the 2003 TMNT cartoons so I got into the turtles some again.
I did learn that the voice of Azula is also the voice of Emily Elizabeth from the original Clifford the Big Red Dog show on PBS ( I freakin LOVED growing up btw) and now I can't hear either character the same way again...
