Hi friends!
In this lesson I'll teach you how to REALLY get an even wash in watercolor.
This is such an important skill to practice and internalize, because the next time you work on a painting it's just going to be better. Sounds good? (;
We will make use of the BEAD in this video. We'll talk about how to utilize it to give yourself more time, and have a great result at the end.
I hope you enjoy this one, and feel free to leave any comment and ask any questions you may have.
- Liron

Best teacher ever!
Ove Rotstedt Thank you! 😁 This was really fun to record, I'm happy it helps!
Im glad I postponed my shower to watch this...... an incredibly simple but oh so important skill to have. Thank you, Liron.
I agree! I was looking specifically for wet in wet, and came across Liron. I don’t think I’ve ever found a better instructor for the basics! I’ve been doing a course on Udemy that covers this exact thing, but jumps right in to creating a fairly complex painting for beginners. I completed the first course, which was all wet on dry, and I somehow figured it out. But the wet in wet has been so overwhelming that I’ve gotten frustrated and stopped trying. I’m actually a decent acrylic painter, but watercolor takes practice. Love these videos!
What is Flixzone? I just tried looking, and all I got was “Flexzone.”
Wow, seriously! I just picked up watercolor and have been so confused and overwhelmed. Not being sure if the issues are my technique, the paint, the brush, etc. Now I finally feel like Im starting to understand. Thank you!
I am new to your channel & in my 40s. I would describe myself as a complete novice, with only about a year working with watercolors. Although frustrating in the beginning, I love watercolors (& all types of art modalities). With all your videos, I figure, it will likely take me the rest of my life to go through all your teachings. What a wonderful wealth of knowledge you have. I thank you sir, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing such helpful information 🙏🏼
This is the best demonstration with explanation of the bead in painting a wash I have ever seen. The best!
Thank you so much 😊🙏🏼
Yes! It's so helpful to see.
Finally, finally found a teacher who could explain the bead to me!!! Thank you, thank you so much! This was brilliant. So grateful!!
Haha so happy I could help! 😊🙏🏼
Liron, Thank you very much for this explanation. Artists on youtube, doing portraits seem to just dab color all over, then never explain what the are doing. A little blue here, some sienna here then all of a sudden the wash is smooth and blended and with depth and we have trouble understanding how it was done. This is an excellent video. Thank you.
I’m so glad I’ve found your channel. As a complete beginner, this is really handy.
Thank you 🙏😊
Damn right, best teacher. I discovered your channel earlier and I think I'm already hooked.
Haha thank you so much! Keep me updated on how it goes (:
The Bead!!!! I've watched and followed many beginner tutorials, and heard about the bead, but I really didn't get it's importance until I saw your video. I think I'm going to binge watch everything you've uploaded :)
Thank you Nadia! 😁😁🙏🏼
Best video I've found on UA-cam for this technique. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much Tom! 😊🙏🏼
All these years of watercolor painting...how did I never learn this about the BEAD?! Thank you, Liron!
WHAT??!!! “…feeding the bead!!” Why have I never heard anyone else explain this? I live in a very very dry climate and struggle tremendously with the flat wash. I’ve never been able to maintain that elusive bead. I can’t wait to try this “feeding the bead” technique. Thank you so much for all the invaluable content you share, Liron. I have learned more from you than ANY other artist I’ve ever followed. You are my art hero…❤ 💪🏻❤
I'm a beginner in everything in arts .... i'm starting to paint with watercolors. I've seen at least 50 videos, and yours are the most informative, relaxed, giving great advice, practical advice !! mental advice !! and you don't to small talking (which I hate in 15 minutes videos). I'll be watching all of your videos for sure. This is just my #3.
Wow, so smooth so even..thank you for this demo.!!
Extremely good tip!!! I am finally able to do proper gradient!!!
This is an amazing technique that I can't wait to try! From an architectural watercolorist, thank you for this! I've been searching for a method like this to give me a consistent wash on my structures.
So happy to help! 😊🙏🏼 That’s the way to go when it comes to extremely large and complex washes
Yes very important ☑️
Thank you for this. I struggle with washes. This is a great lesson, I'm going to give it a try.
My pleasure, thank you ^_^
With a little practice this will become second nature to you, and 100% intuitive.
Thank you! Your technical instruction is just what I needed to make even washes consistently.
Perfect! Very happy to hear 😊🙏🏼
Best wash lesson I have seen so far! Thank you for sharing it!
Great lesson because what frustrates me is how uneven and blotchy my things look. I really want to learn to paint an object with a very consistent look to the color (say, as I like gouache usually does--even and flat). This tutorial really helps. I like your videos and happy I know of a place online I can visit for expert help. Thank you, Liron!
Happy it helps Michael! Takes a bit of practice, but once you get it you’ll be able to easily paint even washes 😁🙏🏼
Thank you so much for your generosity with your time. Great lesson
Thank you I always had trouble with washes that dry up quickly. Watercolor definitely has a mind of its own.
Thanks Liron I just took a class online and they started with doing a bead all the way down the page. Now I know what a bead is!
You are an excellent teacher! Thank you for sharing your techniques & skills! I am improving sooo much by practicing the basic techniques - amazing! SKILL=talent= practice=talent=practice=talent=work=practice 😁👍
Hello Liron, and thank you for this video. I have struggled with my washes, but after watching this and following your advice, I begin to get some really good results. It's so motivating, thank you!
I'm not used to watercolors, but I was looking for a way to tone paper before my colored pencil drawings and I think this technique is perfect. Thank you!
Thank you so much!! I was having a big trouble with washes, and it saved my life!! You are a really good teacher.😊
So happy to hear! ^_^ Thank you so much
בכיף😃
Hi Liron, I’ve been painting for a few years now and struggle with flat even washes over large areas. I now have the answer on how to achieve this. Finally, thank you 🙌
This looks beautiful, and I will try it😊. And I like your paintings very much!
Besides, I love both: traditional painting and painting on the iPad 😊. Greetings from Germany
Thank you so so much ☺️🙏🏼
Thanks so much for this video, I practiced for an hour and really improved wet on dry washes. As a beginner, it was so helpful.
Hi Liron, I just watched your video on your Beginner’s Drawing Course. Thank you for making it so affordable (i.e. cheap!) .... so, of course, I signed up. I am really looking forward to many hours of fun! ... so now I should subscribe ... thanks again!
Awesome, thank you and welcome aboard! 😊🙏🏼 Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything. And I hope you enjoy the channel too 😉
I’m learning the exact technique of doing the water color . Thank you, you are a very good teacher 👍
Thank you, this was really helpful.
Very clear explanation and demonstration. I've always struggled with producing a smooth wash, but looking back it was due to too little paint. My puddles were too small. I'm going to try this exercise. Practice is a bit like shampoo - rinse and repeat :-)
+Alan Snider Haha that's true 😁 More water is usually the solution for uneven washes 👌🏼😊
That was SO helpful Liron!! Such a great explanation of the wash
So helpful
Thank you! This was tremendously helpful!
Thank you Nancy 😊🙏🏼 So happy to hear!
Excellent tutorial, thank you!
I’m a subscriber and I LOVE your tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing
Wow thank you so much. First time I managed to paint a clean wash right after watching this. I’ve been looking for a tutorial like this💕
Another great lesson that is very helpful to me. Thank you, Liron, for this fantastic instruction. As always, much appreciated, my friend.😊👏🏽💕You are extremely talented and have God-given gifts.
So happy you found this helpful! 😊🙏🏼
Thank you so much 🎨
I'm glad you did this tutorial. I have issues with not getting washes even. It's okay when it's the sky and even water but with other things it isn't. Thanks!!!
Hi Liron, I’m very grateful this gem of a video appeared. I’ve been taught differently but now I can see why your washes are so successful. I’m keen to try this technique for myself....Thank you!
This was great!!!! Thank you for the tips! I love that you added the “roof tops” and showed us how to guide paint that is “stuck”. Your tips are amazing and the issues you address are so real!
I never learned the bead method. Know I see how. Part of the trick, too, is not over-misting it.
I should have known this trick before doing the assignment!
Haha, happy you know it now! (:
Awesome. Never seen anyone describe The Bead before. Can’t wait to tryout. Thank You
These tutorials are KEY❤
I don't have sepia on my palette. When I want or need it I just mix a touch of ultramarine with raw umber. When painting with browns I usually mix three puddles... a sepia for one puddle then my ersatz sepia plus a little burnt sienna for a van dyke brown for the second puddle and burnt sienna plus raw umber for burnt umber. Raw umber is for me a far more useful color than sepia. For each his own. That's one of the great things about being different people and the existence of so many colors. There's something for everyone. Right? Riiiight!
The tough thing about getting a large even wash is when the wash is interrupted by or has to be painted around objects...i.e..roofs, chimneys or smoke stacks, girders, cranes or other equipment etc. Not as easy then. Got any suggestions Liron?
I'm trying to work my way through your vids. Oy! So many! You are one prolific dude. ✒✏📘🎨🎤🎧
Thank you Liron! Your awesome videos are always right in time for me, I get a problem with enough water in my paintings). By the way, your speed of speaking increased incredibly for today but I still understand you well, it's amazing and cute!
Wonderful!!!! Super!!!! It really helps me ... I understand now my mistakes THANKS TO YOU !!! Merci merci!!!!
You are officially my watercolor teacher! God bless 🙏
Thank you so much! You are great at the basics! Just what I need. You're a find!
Really explicit. Thanks.
Good vid. Mixing areas need to be lightly sanded with 1000 sandpaper to eliminate the beading.
Yes, that can help the palette indeed. Though recently I stopped doing it for new ones, and it kind of works out with time haha (:
Great demo ...this is really going to help ...thanks for showing us
I always enjoy your videos.
So happy to hear 😊🙏🏼 Thank you
Thank you , this is a good demonstration, can't wait to try it.

Thanks for adding the info about Sepia being part Ivory black - I didn't know that. Also a great tip to go back to basics whenever you're feeling stuck.

Haha - ohhh now I see!
We never had them here in Israel, that's fascinating! 🎨😮
Had no idea these existed.
nah you just take that paint bucket and BAM! Modern art:P
I see that a lot =P
Don't get me started on modern art! Haha
Such a great teacher. Also for some reason most of the tutorials on watercolor seem to be done by women so it is nice to see and hear a guy teaching sometimes.
Thank you so much 😊🙏🏼
Happy I could help
These are such great videos, thank you for sharing
So happy I can help with the vids 😊🙏🏼 Let me know if you ever need more help
Fantastic, thanks for your awesome videos!
My pleasure 🙏🏼😊 Thank you!
great video thanks
Hi Liron! When you paint do you always keep your sketchbook or paper at an angle? That seems to be the only way I can get this to work. Makes sense if you are at home or using an easel, but when you are out doing urban sketching do you also make sure to keep it propped up? And how vertical do you position it?
That's a great observation (:
It's always easier to produce an even wash with the paper at an angle, as it helps the water bead.
When painting outside I have the sketchbook on my lap, and it does have an angle.
Sometimes you have to kind of cross your legs to get it to work.
The real challenge is when sitting at a cafe or something similar, and having the sketchbook on the table. In that case I'll usually put something under it, to create a small angle. It's better than nothing (:
EDIT: for me around 20 degrees works best, but it's really a personal choice.
Great Video on how to get an even wash!
Thank you 😊🙏🏼
Very clarifying! thanks!
the GOAT
Liron. Wow. I am a total beginner to watercolor. I love the way the paper absorbs the water. I love the way the pigment disburses onto the paper, depending on how much water you use. And doing the bead technique for an even wash is like doing a meditation. I can't wait to try it!
One question: when you sketched in the two roofs, did the graphite serve partly as a physical boundary that the paint would not cross, or was it just a visual guide for you? If you used ink, charcoal, etc. would it have affected the paint differently?
Thank you! So happy I found your channel!
Thank you so much 😊🙏🏼
So happy I could help!
The pencil lines are used purely as a guideline (: They don't physically stope the paint from moving there.
