above everything else, i’ll always be sad that joey never found his person by the end of the show. he deserved love more than anyone.
Damn.. same here.
I don't think it's sad , joey's character is shown to have commitment issues besides he enjoys his singlehood and finding a lover is not a necessity for everyone
Think joey should have ended up with Rachel
There was spinoff of joey

I legit think this might be Matt LeBlanc's best scene in the whole show. So many different emotions all done so believably. Was he ever better than this?
right??and I love that Jen can also level with Matt's acting in this one...its like watching a tennis match, they're just moving back and forth without falter...
I agree. He was just great overall in the eighth season, but this scene takes it. I love how much he showed in 'Joey Dates Rachel' too, and some of his scenes with Ross.
He's a below average actor. Just got lucky with this character. The opposite of Ross. David is a very good actor, but his character is so annoying and pathetic.
@@pharkasj he is not a below avergat actor he did act really well. You should better stfu
Right 👍
Joey just has the purest soul.
So you say, but I should point out that he's wearing a shirt of Calvin doing Hobbes.........
Ask the girl whose leg he put on fire😂😂

Yes
Yesss yess yess!!
it looks so real !🥲
Thanks I needed to cry today
This scene somehow turns a heartbreaking moment into a nice one when they hold each other for a while. Such great acting.
Unpopular opinion: I actually liked the two of them together. He was kind, respectful, and supportive of her. They laughed and had a great time together. I think they (the writers) could have really explored this. Like if Rachel had a work function to go to and Joey gets nervous because "he's not smart enough", but it would be wonderful opportunity to show him being there because it's important to her and trying his best. This was just such a missed opportunity. Then again, I always think that kindness beats out every other quality.
And took care of her while she was pregnant and of Emma too
I definitely think it could have been great but both scenarios are fair. Rachel was always meant to be with Ross and I think her relationship with Joey was great as it is. Sometimes you put yourself out there and it doesn't work out, it's important to show that side too instead of the fairytale-type ending.
Tbh it was impossible considering the Emma and Charlie situation later Joey really improved but it just wouldn't work coz everything pointed to Ross and Rachel again
Joey was a much better boyfriend than that sack of shit related to Monica geller
I disagree with you as far as them working as a couple. But looking back on the show, the kindness is one of the things I liked best about it. A lot of the shows back then were just awful as far as character interactions. Married With Children is a great example. They are supposed to be a family unit and they are all so hateful and cruel to each other. Like a lot of the shows every other line was a set up for one of the characters to cut each other down. It was more sad and depressing than funny. Insult comedy is by far the easiest type of comedy to wrote. Making something like Friends, where all the characters actually care about each other is special. I still watch it occasionally. Watched the entire series after seeing them as they aired. Then I watched them again when I got them on Blu Ray.
It's a shame that they don't care enough about the fans to give us a reboot of some sort. Would love to find out what these people are up to. Joey was really shaping up when they cancelled. Far worse shows have gotten a much longer leash. And I think Monica and Chandler would have made an excellent spinoff as well.
I know people hate the Joey/Rachel thing but I think it only really got weird when Rachel fell in love with Joey. Matt LeBlanc does a great job here at actually acting like he's in love with Rachel and it feels believable and it's actually good character development for Joey imo. When Rachel falls in love with Joey later, it feels forced and it doesn't actually seem like Rachel's in love with Joey, just like she has a crush on him. And then the relationship ends almost immediately when they return from Barbados so like it's just a huge waste of time
That's true.
But except in earlier seasons and her first relationship with Ross I never saw Rachel showing deep feelings for anybody. Not even toward Ross. The closest to that afterward was when they had Emma but very briefly until Joey "proposed".
True, especially because it comes out of nowhere. Joey lives with her for a long time, grows close to her and his emotions change when she gets pregnant, it makes much more sense.
Rachel has a dirty dream one night and that's it.
You know what, you're right. In Joey's end it was indeed believable and set in a good built up with them bonding a lot in season 7 (more than usual anyway) which was I think the season before he realized he was slowly falling for her - but for Rachel's side, it was just out of the blue. To her, it might've been just a crush/infatuation. I think her feelings towards him was more on feeling lonely and realizing someone loves her and always gonna be there for her. He was like a safety net. It's sad, but realistic I guess. It definitely is a good development for Joey's character though that he could get serious and capable of love. (he had that with Kate but, in this one I think it's more expanded better)
I think the reason why Joey and Rachel was tried and barely went anywhere was because it was an idea and concept that Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Aniston absolutely HATED. They felt it was wrong for their characters to actually get together and though stuff like this and even the accidental proposal (since Rachel was obviously not in her right mind state just giving birth) were fine actually committing the two as a couple was not something they wanted. I'm sure the idea originally was probably going to have the two be together a bit longer then just an ep but the actors hatred for them actually going through with it likely pushed them to end it as quickly as possible thus resulting in yeah a pretty rushed end relationship. The sad thing is that honestly I do feel Joey and Rachel as a couple have more potential and chemistry together as Joey doesn't have really the issues Ross would have of being overly jealous or anal about key details and two have more basic common ground but yeah pretty clear the team wanted Rahcel/Ross to be endgame with how long they were pushing that as the ultimate "love story" of the series.
Maybe Barbados could have been a one time thing… Like kissing a friend when youre really drunk, It can happen and it doesnt mean there is something more
It's so weird seeing Joey fall in love and actually be serious
But it happened quite a lot in the show. There's Ursula, Kate, Erin, and Janine.
@@ponzu638 True, he was serious about Kate. People often forget that. He didn't get to that point with Ursula and Janine, though. I don't even remember who Erin is lol.
@@monmothma3358 I think he was serious about Ursula, but Ursula didn't like him as much as he did so their relationship didn't go further to the point of being serious. Erin was the girl who Rachel and Phoebe wanted for Joey and claimed cupid sent her, but turns out the girl only wanted to fool around. Although her appearance was very short-lived, I will argue Joey did seriously liked her, and would have pursued a serious relationship with her. I was kind of pushing it with Janine. At most, he was just infatuated with her and was probably challenged by her.
no offense but i don’t think you could consider that love, at least true love, joey more so had a crush on her or was infatuated by her i would say.
@@jessica-uj4bw No he was in love with Rachel. He mentioned it quite a few times that he was in love and that he's never felt that way before.
It took a lot of courage for Joey to confess his feelings to her. He knew there was a very good chance she didn't feel the same way, but he still told her. You have to feel bad for him. To be completely honest, he's too good for her.
Nah, she was too good for him.
Too good for her? Meh. He's a playboy
That's not true
This was one of most emotional moments on Friends. I know I’m in the minority, but I loved the Joey/Rachel relationship. Matt and Jennifer had awesome chemistry together. Pity that the writers couldn’t make it last.
I liked Joey and Rachel for their time - I knew Ross and Rachel were endgame, as I'd already seen the finale, but I still liked this storyline (I heard Matt and Jennifer didn't like the storyline, but I don't know if that's true), they built it up well, and it made sense for the time, in my opinion.
@@MJN_SEIFER they hated it. And it made no sense because even joey said rachel is meant to be with ross
They literally had zero chemistry. All they had was a sweet little brother and elder sister relationship
@@raizahasmath5580 exactly. Matt said it felt like incest
@@itachistan437 Indeed. And I hate these people who hypes up the wrong type of relationship
His expression at 2:32 was kinda heart wrenching scene for me! Could really feel his helplessness! Phenomenal acting by Matt
3:32 when Joey said “not the but” I felt his heart break but he knew it was gonna happen
Rachel is the only woman Joey have ever loved and been serious about throughout the whole show.
How do you do🤣🤣
The acting in this scene is phenomenal..the little details really make this scene..for instance, when Joey and Rachel hug the first time you can see he's about to put both arms around her but he's also a little hurt and guarded so he pits one arm on the chair..even though he's hurt he's still trying to be supportive. I think Joey was the best friend of the group. It really sucks that out of them all, at the end of the show he was the only one who hadn't found love and moved across country.
I so agree with you!
But remember he slept with a lot of girls and loved by so many.
Matt was great in this scene!
He hated that story, so it sounded a lot sadder than "in love."
@@BiancaAguiar934 so. What does that have to do with how good his acting was
@@BiancaAguiar934 He hated the storyline in season 9/10 when Rachel and Joey actually hooked up briefly.
@@nikunjdixit1175 He already hated this story as soon as it was released, his falling in love with her. He always found it ridiculous and that wasn't the character makeup he always did. He, Jennifer and the rest of the cast protested that this story of Joey falling in love with Rachel be canceled. Matt wanted Joey to have an affair with Phoebe, that's all, because he suited the character, not to mention the cast loved Ross and Rachel, and the audience did too.
@@BiancaAguiar934 Well, I've always heard that they hated the storyline of him and Rachel falling in love and getting together. The whole point of this storyline was that he recognized that it was wrong and weird for him to be in love with his pregnant best friend. But what they did in late season 9/early season 10 didn't work.
I legit cried the first time I watched this. I know Joey's a bit of a playboy but his feelings with Rachel is different. It's pure and innocent and it's heartbreaking watching it getting turned down.
A bit? you sure about that HAHAHA
She did the right thing and he finally realized that and took it with grace.
"you CANNOT DO THIS to a pregnant WOMAnnn"
Hilarious delivery
Joey's so gentle and understanding and kind...
This to me is the realest scene in friends, and it’s played out beautifully by both Matt and Jen. I was asked out by a childhood friend when we were 19, and I was absolutely shocked. It was unbelievably painful turning him down, knowing I was hurting him. Now at 22 years old, I’ve fallen in love with one of my closest friends, and I have never felt this way before. I just love him, his smile is at the forefront of my mind, all the time, and I don’t believe I’ll ever meet a kinder, more chaotic and stubborn, wonderful person than him. I don’t want to feel this way, and I have never seen such unrequited love portrayed in such an accurate way, just the expressions on his face are so reflective of how it feels; likewise with Jen, the pure agony on her face when it sinks in, trying to figure out how to let him down gently. Being in both shoes is heartbreaking, and this will always be my favourite scene in friends, it really is painful because in both scenarios, you just can’t help how you feel.
This hits home so close 😢
22?
All the best 😂
I can actually relate to this as well too I’ve been in love with a childhood best friend and her name is Sierra Albergo. She and I both grew up together since we were kids and we were inseparable but life drifted us apart.
You should tell him, i Know its hard falling in love with a very close friend but at least this way you will know and see what háppens next
Definitely one of the most emotional scenes in the series.
That "Hey hey hey. You can't. Ever." Moment is what I live for. I hope we all find this person who says these words to us and we say them back. Everyone deserves this❤.
Has Matt Leblanc received an Emmy for this scene? Because he is OUTSTANDING.
No. But he received 3 emmy nomination and one 2 golden globe nomination for playing Joey while both David and Matthew perry received only 1 emmy nomination for playing their respective characters.
that one detail on 4:19 really got me.he couldn't know what to do.great acting great scene

Joey actually did everything he could for his friends, he always put his friends first no matter what and i still stan Joey and Rachel. His love, emotions and every little detail is portrayed perfectly. Oh m getting emo
Joey and Rachel had a MUCH better relationship than Rachel and that half-dinosaur loser Roas
@@decathreat6194 that sounds like you are insulting Ross.
But if I remember the show correctly, it was always Rachel who was bad to him (when they weren't together, she sabotaged his other relationships, but then she did not want to date him.. pretty messed up).
He was "loser" because he was insecure and that resulted in a lot of bad/weird situations for him...

Let's not sleep on Jen's acting here. It's brilliant because she plays a more vulnerable and considerate side of Rachel which makes so much sense given her pregnancy and emotions going through her at that point in her life
This was some great acting... This is why Friends remain an all time classic. For a comedy show the acting was top notch

Joey was the purest, most truest and genuine, sincere friend out of all of them. Emotionally more mature than any of the characters on the show. Loved him here.
The waiter, omg he is from that episode where ross gets stood up
Yes. With the crab cakes.
😆😆😆
Yep. He's implied to be gay in both too.
I always cry when I see this scene, when Rachel doesn't reciprocate his love, it's so heartbreaking. I think Joey loved Rachel more than Ross did.

It’s never not weird hearing someone say this to you, and that’s what makes this scene so relatable and real
seeing this clip, I think Rachel and Joey had great chemistry together. I wished they had explored this more...not to mention they are both GORGEOUS people...
Salute to Joey. At this point, they might have reached the point of platonic relationship. Yet joey risked it all. Either he dated Rachel or he loosed her.
And yet he chose to remain her platonic friend.
Joey looks very cute when he express that it was not a joke
Joey ironically is way more emotionally mature then Ross
Joey is not immature. Although he seems innocent and sometimes immature too, which he's not. Here... he stopped Rachael right at 'BUT'. He knew there's no BUT in love. Kudos to him for understanding it right there.
The moment Rachel said BUT, he knew his feelings will never be reciprocated, gut wrenching and heartbreaking, this is the reason being developing very close bond with a friend is a very bad idea
Joey is emotionally most mature and sensitive out of the 3 men. Love this scene 🥺
@@rdu239 exactly...I know how it feels when the love we showered isn't reciprocated. I get it bruh...I've been there too 😂🙌
I don't get why everyone hated on this pairing. Season 8 really did a beautiful job putting them together. I think rather than having them be torn apart within the first few episodes of season 9, and they had just kept going with what they had started before, it would have been really, really nice. And Matt and Jennifer did so well together. Their chemistry was very, idk, spiritual in a way. The story was also a lot of growth for both characters (that was undone in the following season).
This relationship only happened to keep Rachel and Ross from getting back together and in my opinion, it didn’t feel organic like it did with Monica and Chandler
I wish the laugh track didn’t occur. It disregards what this scene is designated to be. This might be their best performance I’ve ever glanced at!
I've had this conversation and believe she handled it like a pro, and yeah, I'm including the crying, denial and absolute fear
I need a full Joey & Rachel phase, their short love story was so pure
Nah it was toxic. She did the right thing by rejecting him and moving on.
yeahh tru
I’m not sure if you guys notice, but the way Joey’s eyes hold such feeling is so another level, he is so damn in love with a woman he can’t have..his fri
Matt LeBlanc totally nailed the Joey fall in love with Rachel thing
The way he says but always making me cry😢. I really wish they ended up together. They were a much better couple than ross and her
Oh my, that scene was so touching and superbly performed by Jennifer Aniston & Matt Leblanc. Great actors indeed! One of the best ever in Friends, of course there were a lot. Poor Joey he never really knew how Rachel would respond to his confession but hey he took a chance.
I am prepared to die on the hill that Joey and Rachel had better chemistry than Rachel and Ross and the writers should have given them more of a chance rather than bail on them so quickly.
The scene when they’re watching Cujo on the chair together, Joey’s “terrified” is so believable, it gets me every time.
AGREED AGREED AGREED
No way.
You are right!
They didn't have good chemistry though. It was a bad match, despite them being good friends.
Ross and Rachel's problem wasn't chemistry.
@@Joe_Parmesanthey had chemistry I just didn’t like how Ross was a lot of the time
I'm a fan of both Friends and HIMYM, and have typically seen Friends as the more light-hearted show, since HIMYM can get very realistic and serious about romance and life, much more than friends. However, this confession from Joey was extremely realistic and honestly felt emotional. Great job from Matt LeBlanc.
Everyone says that Joey is just a dim-witted womanizer, who couldn't care less about girls he sleeps with. But we do know that this was the first time he actually fell in love. And regardless of who and what he has been up until this moment, here he displays great emotional maturity in a lot of ways - he tells Rachel outright about his feelings, even though that puts him in a vulnerable position, he openly and fully accepts that she may not feel the same way about him, and he does a very selfless thing by assuring her that she will not lose his friendship - he'll be there for her even though it will really hurt him. I got all kinds of respect and sympathy for him here.
He was a real man right there. Very few men in real life behave that maturely.
I loved this storyline and thought they could definitely end up together! But the ending of this story line was so abrupt. I thought there even coulda been more tension between Ross Joey and Rachel.
There couldnt have been. She always had the most tension with ROSS. And they couldnt. Have ended up together especially when rachel said she only wanted meaningless sex she NEVER had feelings for joey and yall are pushing it
In reality her feelings for Joey are just a crush while she loves Ross even after their breakup. Rachel actually tells Ross she still loves him when he's dating Bonnie and when he's married to Emily. Rachel really wants to be with Ross and knows he loves her too at the time she starts dating Joey but due to a breakdown in communication, she's not aware of just how much Ross loves her. Joey does love Rachel but is hesitant about starting a relationship with Rachel because he believes Ross and Rachel are supposed to be together. They do continue their relationship with Ross's reluctant approval but it's clear that Rachel is not totally comfortable with continuing, especially after seeing how badly Ross reacted to them being together. The fact that Rachel and Joey are unable to consummate their relationship makes them realise they're just too good friends to continue having been just friends for many years.
@@itachistan437 Always hated Ross/Rachel thing. Super toxic. They were really not good for each other and brought out the worst in each other. That's not what happened with Joey and Rachel. That had a solid foundation of friendship and could have really blossomed in the one great relationship. My goodness, do you not know people who have gotten together after they have known each other for years?
You know, the more I think about it, I think the Rachel x Joey thing COULD'VE worked, if they hadn't introduced it so late.
If they did this in season four or five, I think it'd be okay. Honestly, I think they could've been better for each other than Rachel and Ross, only because the older I get, the more I realize that their relationship was kind of toxic.
But by season eight, everyone was so invested in Rosschel, that there was no hope for Joey.
now THIS is true love. joey didnt care that rachel didn't reciprocate, because he truly loved and cared for her. he wanted her yo be happy, not him
he has such a pure soul, i feel bad for him, she's the first woman he fell in love with but...
The way Matt has acted when he says he wasn’t joking 🫡
I cried for joey every single time 🥲
They really really needed at least a season together as a couple
3:35 that broken little "but" makes me feel things I can't explain
4 :12 when they both are crying that is both lmao and awe moment 😅😂❤
Rachel and Joey would have made a really good pair.
Whether Joey & Rachel was a storyline people liked or not, this scene always gets me chocked up.
It's emotional and funny at the same time. Those waiters nailed it. 'I think one of them is dying' 😂
this was always the weirdest storyline on the show.. it kind of ruined their dynamic for me. joey wasn't the kind of character to need a s/o to be happy, he just seems better on his own when portrayed in the show's runtime.
At least they only flirted with the idea and didn't have them go through with it. Unlike himym, where two men both slept with the same woman and they still hang out afterwards like nothing happened.
@@felixfelicis51 the problem, for me, wasn't that they slept with the same women but it was because there were feelings involved and she's still in the group so both have to see her all the time.
He wasn't the kind of character to need someone?? I think he'd love to be a family man eventually, with lots of kids running around. He was a womanizer, but we also saw him being capable of depth of feeling for a woman. As they years went by he might not mind sticking to one woman if they had that together.
It's one of the best scenes ever:) in the show and generally, in the movie at all)) so truthful and touching

After watching every episode, some numerous times, I saw this one today for the first time and its the only scene where I ever actually shed a tear and cried while watching...wow. Joey is sooo sweet, Racheal shld've loved him, Ross was always so whiney and needy.

I think he’s so easy to have a relationship with others women, but with Rachel that is special and romantic😊
I liked them together and Joey was much more mature here. Sad it didn’t go too far.
I am one of the minority that actually love this relationship. I personally felt the chemistry between them and the potential to be in a much healthier relationship. It's also great to see how a play/fuckboy like Joey to be in love with a woman. And Joey actually convinced me that he was deeply sincere, because he fell for her when she wasn't in a good shape. Yeah, she is still pretty and all, but normally, men falls for a single or atleast not a pregnant woman. It was a great character development for Joey. ❤❤
joey really eats his own advise to ross, "the friendzone".
I know people lost their minds on Joey+rach but in their dating episodes they’re chemistry is so amazing and flirty and sexy
They're really sweet together.
