Jose Soto Theoretically, the wood of a solid body guitar affects the tone and sustain by how much and which frequencies it absorbs from string vibration. The paint that sits between the wood and for example the bridge could also have similar effect. I wouldn’t argue how important the species of wood is, but something like plastic vs wood should sound different in a meaning way.
cyrfung thank you for using the word “absorbs” I think the majority of people have it backwards... Different woods absorb different frequencies they don’t create any. Companies like aristidies guitars though are not made of wood but sound and play amazing... so I’m not sure lol
I did when I dinged my strat pretty good. The dent is deeper than you’d expect, because of how thick the several layers paint is. It’s like the thickness of a pick guard.
cyrfung yup, it’s called dampening. I have explained this so many times to people, and many refuse to accept it. If you had a bone but and a brass bridge, but the rest of the guitar was made of rubber it sure as shit would have a different tone. Tone woods may not have a massive effect on electric guitars, but oscillating strings are not a closed system, so they do have an impact. Hell if you can feel the guitar vibrate after striking a chord, there is energy loss occurring, and higher frequencies decay first, of course material properties affect tone!
I really like the work that you do. I am very impressed, and am going to try out a few of your techniques on my own guitars. Every so often I will find somebody who is a breath of fresh air in terms of working on guitars and you are absolutely in this category for me. Thank you for sharing. It's greatly appreciated!
Just a note to anyone else wanting to do this. If all you're after is a color change, a poly finish can take paint quite well as long as it is fine sanded a little so the new paint can stick. There's not need to go through all the work of stripping it back and then prepping it, and the bonus is you already have a very smooth finish to start with as a base.
glad i read your comment! i have a black ibanez GIO which i want to paint white. my daughter is a natural talented artist and she's gonna illustrate it with her favorite anime characters and themes in black fine tip pen then ill put a gloss over that. what do you think? 240 grit wet sand on the existing poly finish?
That’s look like a brand new guitar....redone a brand new guitar is insane! But when the result is as beautiful as that, I would do the same. Amazing work!
Sorry to be so off topic but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my login password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@Sage Hudson I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Very therapeutic and satisfying to watch. Thinking about having this done to my MIJ 62 reissue strat (currently finished in a sunburst poly) and having it refinished with nitro in either the same sunburst or aged Olympic white
I was looking at Hendrix monterey strats, looking to build my own and realized i have a 68 MIJ RI that would be perfect.. has perfect colored neck and the yellowish old wood looking headstock? Daaang thinking about it man haha.
I'm glad the paint came off so easily on your body, but for anyone wanting to try this, try not to pull up on the paint too much. I heated mine up, it was coming up just fine and then a splinter pulled up along the grain and ruined my plans to do a burst. It doesn't take much, as I pulled the loose piece of wood off the paint. I found it best to push instead of pulling up. Learn from my stupid mistake!
Love your channel !! I really like how you record the process without the distracting music like other channels do. Very calming and insightful and your work is amazing. Thank you.
Great video & great paint job! Leo Fender perfected this "bolt-on neck" design LONG ago. However, having built a bunch of these Mexi-Strats, I can say that replacing the stamped saddles with solid brass or stainless steel units is a super improvement. They sound better and are FAR more comfortable. Also, that metal pickguard will shield the pick-ups better against noise. Lining the body routings with copper tape will complete the job. It will help reduce hum & noise noticeably. Finally, I always add a body protector under the neck plate. They save the body from being dented or getting paint cracks. In some cases, they improve low- and mid-range attack.
It's the heat. The thick coat is obviously Polyurethane. It's very hard to remove cold, even with a heavy sander. Apply enough heat to anything and off it comes... except my wife's nagging! LOL
Thanks for this. Mine is also a MIM from the 90's and has that black basecoat. I was worried I'd have a hard time with a heat gun.. but it looks pretty straight forward. Phew!
Like the idea of doing a clear coat and ~1000 grit between the white primer and color. Seems like you had to use a crap-ton of color to hide the grain. without an opaque primer. The grain might come back, you know.
I see all these videos on UA-cam peeling off the finish if a fender guitar with heat and a scraper. When I did it the finish was very thin and the wood would gouge even with me being extra careful. I dont know how they make it look so easy.
Andy-san, I am shopping for an MJT body with 60’s contours. I can save a fair amount doing the paint job myself. I have experience finishing 3 necks in tinted and clear nitrocellulose… do you suppose it would be worth it to do it myself? I would use aerosol cans, so I imagine I would have to purchase several cans of clear and 1 color.
It looks like that guitar had been refinished before, but without removing the original (black) paint. I'm guessing that's why the finish was so thick when it was being removed.
Wish is was a easy as you make it look. I like the care you showed in stripping the poly off. There's probably money to be made with an authentic Fiesta Red Strat refinish. You took an already great product and made it custom.
Absolutely in love with this video. I like your paint stripping technique versus the chemical stripping or sanding I’ve done in the past. That kind of chisel do you use? I haven’t seen one like that at the hardware stores I’ve been to.
Hi! Great video! 👍 Please tell me, how do you remove the bushings tuning? I need to replace them but don't know how to take these bushings off.... Thank you 🙂
This time I changed the pickup along with it, so I didn't know exactly what I was doing. It's also heavier, and I'm sure there will be some change in the sound.
Why not just buy a USA strat from the start? Unless you truly enjoy the process of customizing, which I personally do to be honest. Financially, it ends up being negligible. I find it almost always better to just save for the guitar with a nitro finish. Again, if it’s all about having a project and the enjoyment of it all then hell yeah, strip it and refinish. I’ve done many similar projects with mid level guitars. It is great fun. But I always, ALWAYS come to the realization at the end that I could have just waited another month and bought the USA fender or the mid level Gibson instead of the MIM fender or the low level Gibson. Going through the modification process is great fun though and I always enjoy it. Super incredible video. Truly enjoyed it.
It doesn't matter if it's Fender Mexico or USA. What do you think is the difference between Mexico and USA? Could it be finished to the same quality as a new Fender USA? And there are some things that Fender USA can't duplicate. It's a personal choice, of course.
This MIM strat is now MIJ
Lol
jeez, i never realized how thick that paint is
I was just about to say this

The workmanship is like the fender custom shop, amazing Andy
And he has the pride of having building it himself. Win, win.

@Sage Hudson It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
@Emanuel Ben happy to help xD
This is the first guitar repaint video I have seen without obvious wood grain showing through or other defects. Nice work!

Great video. Really nicely edited.
And that guitar looks amazing.
Color is so so...video however is top notch and your work is IMPECIBLE!
Exactly.Just needs a Hello Kitty transfer.
Usually the old paint is left in the recesses of the body. It would be interesting to see how this paint was removed in this case.

Incredible work
Nice on the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back."
It really is beautiful!
Man I can't believe how easy that coating comes off.
That's because of the thickness of coating and the nature of coating material.
It is also because of very well prepared surface before coating.
@@u2dva I take it this wouldn't work on a normal paint surface then or would it?
It's the heat. The thick coat is obviously Polyurethane. It's very hard to remove cold, even with a heavy sander. Apply enough heat to anything and off it comes... except my wife's nagging! LOL
@@TerryMasri That's ironically funny, I was thinking the same thing about my mistake... I mean dear wife, LOL!
So the paint on this guitar is polyester, not polyurethane.
It's a pretty thick paint job, but it's easy to peel off.
My 92 MIM strat looked like that too. Stripped it and lightened the overall weight by over 1lb.
Increíble 🫱🏽🫲🏼
Absolutely fantastic, well prepared video, thank you. Gerwyn.
fantastic video !! great job !! congratulation !! !!
Very nice work...excellent..
Why did you fill in the strap button hole with dowel ? I'm sure you could have left it - save you re - drilling another hole 🎸

Thanks for this. Mine is also a MIM from the 90's and has that black basecoat. I was worried I'd have a hard time with a heat gun.. but it looks pretty straight forward. Phew!
My mim strats finish wasn't that thick when I started taking it off , that looks crazy thick!
Watching your video is so satisfying...
Yes, especially if you know how to appreciate the good work
Like the idea of doing a clear coat and ~1000 grit between the white primer and color. Seems like you had to use a crap-ton of color to hide the grain. without an opaque primer. The grain might come back, you know.
Mother of God that finish is super thick! What the hell are they thinking?
yeah, that original finish looked like it was sprayed on with a garden hose. That was 20 mils at least !
I don't know guys... I think it could do with another coat...
I think not all of it is actually lacquer. Some of it should be wood grain filler.
"fullerplast" is its name - cheap and easy to apply
I think there’s an old coat of black that was painted over
Beautiful!
Thanks for the video.
ahhh the intro is tingling my brain
i want you back?
Amazing video. It is incredible how thick was the paint int this model, the guitar could not "breathe"
It's the standard polyurethane coating, commonly combined with the alder wood.
It doesn"t really matter on an electric guitar. On an acoustic it would be really bad though.
Myth.
Perfection. Great job and great playing 🙏
Can someone please explain the process at 4:16? Did he fill a hole with wood and is making it flush with the rest of the body?
I planed it off.
excellent work, looks great! Well done!
Why did you fill the CNC indexing holes? That's how you know it's a true Fender body and which plant it was made.
That is a very excellent job you did.
I have an FSR player series in shell pink
Very nice! Great attention to details 👍.

My US strat had the same multiple piece body.
Great refinish job! I was hoping you would replace the bridge saddle height screws - and you did LOL. Very nice playing demo at the end. Nice video
The colour nice before paint.
Nicely done !. May you tell us what lacquer used and how you seal the wood grain. Regards.

It looks like that guitar had been refinished before, but without removing the original (black) paint. I'm guessing that's why the finish was so thick when it was being removed.
No, that's the thick ass sealer stuff Fender uses under their finishes

This is a scraper from a Japanese manufacturer called Olfa.
Almost 50 pieces of wood!! Damn it Fender. Nice Job Andy. Where are you located?
Very nice, love it.

Such a thick laquer. My Samick for 100 € in the nineties got a much more thinner laquer.
Awesome!

That's orange oil for cleaning the fingerboard.
Use it to make it clean. It is not a moisturizer.
I am impressed how your compressor is silent
You can tell the development of a culture the less they generate and tolerate noise.
I turned down the sound of the compressor in the edit.
@@Andybassguitar this is nice of you. Your video reminds me ones of jisaku kobo. Really peaceful and expert. Great job and nice color for the guitare!

I wonder what the total weight of all of that poly you chipped off would be?
480g

Does the metal pick guard change the sound or sustain compared to the plastic?

It's also heavier, and I'm sure there will be some change in the sound.
It will definitly sound more metal 🤘🏻
can you go over what your process is after you remove the paint? how long do you wait to sand between coats?
Let the lacquer coating dry for one month before sanding.
Wow. Amazing
Those frets looked to me like they needed recrowning.
