Tektro had to go! Clinton said he bled them many times, and they couldn’t be revived. This was a hard day’s work, but his reaction was well worth it. Good times. 🤜🤛
It's mind boggling how many people drop all that coin for a nice bike, then never maintain their suspension. Some once they notice decreased performance they think they need an upgrade. Others if they finally try to service it there's already damage to the stanchions or sliders. Some pass the buck and sell the bike then buy a new bike.
i feel the same way! i cant believe people don't service their suspension, its like a cars oil change... i probably service my suspension way to often hopefully it will last a lifetime
its a 16 year old kid, i didnt know anything about my bike at that age and i had no clue about suspension maintenance. this costs a decent amount of money and if his parents dont ride they wouldnt know its needed and would be skeptical about spending more money on the bike.
i'm surprised more people dont learn to service their suspension at home.. or at least get it serviced by a shop regularly. It completely transforms the ride quality.
For the Derailure hanger alignment, try to have one point (Can be the Valve or another point on the wheel) and do the 360 check of every angle with that same point, if you have a slight bend rim you won't get the hanger 99% straight if you do it like you do how you've done it in the Video
I have the Trance x 2 which is very similar; the problems you list are close to normal even for near new Trances. The dealer had never set derailleur limits or indexing, the chain clutch was off, the brakes sealed like crazy, the front fork bushings on one side were rattling, and the bottle cage rivnuts were loose. Most of the issues were just maintenance problems as on your example. I think it is a decent bike and I really enjoy riding mine.
Always glad to see people giving back. Kudos to you and Jared. Always fun to see a new video by either of you. Been a big fan of Jared since his Siskiu T7 days. Big fan of yours since Sad to Rad. Keep the great content coming!
Yes i totally agree Evan. We should put work into our bikes not just money! I am 17 and i have been building and doing my own work on my bikes. Thats why i started watching your channel. Because i needed budget solutions to making my bike better even if it ment putting in the work!
exactly what i did with my nukeproof scalp. bought it used and it was in a sorry state. the fron axle had no threads (wedge axle no longer made socustom made my own), rear coil was leaking and blown out, bearings were shot all over the bike. replaced everything and the bike feels amazing and better than new
I don't understand people who buy expensive bikes then don't maintain them. I ride a basic hard tail that I have upgraded and I try to baby that thing. Yearly maintenance and tune ups.
1:31 this is actually what Fox and Rockshox use, but they are black instead. But Rockshhox use grey horrible seals on some forks, those had a bad failing rate, I had a fork that came covered in oil, and seals were off. They were out of spec. But the Fox seals were always good, but no wonder, they were SKF, Swedish goodness. But with the green seals, you know it's SKF from far away.
When the two of you were servicing the shock, reminds me of when Evan got a neglected monarch and a bomber z2 to fix up and install on his mythic. good times 2 years ago being smart with cash
I bought that same tool kit when I started working on my bike. It literally has 90% of the tools you need to maintain anything on the bike. They're not great tools, but they don't suck either. Here I am, 3 years and another bike later and I still use that kit.
I have a L 2021 Specialized Rockhopper that I know is a entry bike but I will gradually make upgrades to it. Just got into MTB for health reasons and I have became so addicted. Hopefully one day I can travel from Rhode Island to gets some tips and hints from you. This channel has done wonders for me, Thank you.
Awesome job 👍🤘 I enjoy helping people too and it's nice to see that you've done this for your friends 😁🤘 The bike hand tool kit you bought for him is the first toolkit I bought and I still use it, they are very decent tools. You definitely gave him that falling in love with his bike again moment😁
9:49 In my experience these semimetallic pads are great, bite as well as Shimanos metallic, but don't crack, but not tried the 4 piston pads, but had the same compound on TRP Spyke.
nice turn out, really like these sad-2-rad vids, bike maintenance is one of my favorite hobbies. dig your channel to cause you keep it real ...keep it up 🤘
I don't think it was a bad choice to take off the Tektro's, but I would say it might have come from a misinformed place. A lot of Tektro's, outside of the lowest end brakes they have, are really good brakes for their cost. Also, most of their servicing, including fluid, is interchangable with Shimanos. They are certainly worthwhile brakes. But a very good video, love the reaction, I hope it inspires him to take better care of his bike going forward. I remember being that age and thinking I couldn't take care of my bike, now I realize I can't afford not to.
I have to agree they're good for the price - the Orion 4P stops very well. In saying that, I replaced mine with SLX and it made a world of improvement.
11:40 you should upgrade the DAG2 with cmhPrintedDesigns FlipDAG-2, I did, it ads an swing arm so you can flip the rod out, no realigning needed. It's a Pro mechanic for Trek who makes them, he 3d prints them with robust plastic.
One remark: Hanger alignment should be done aganst one reference point (valve hole) rotated in 90 and 180 deg, because if your wheel is not true, it will alter your measurement.
Those Orion Tektros are not bad man. And you can service them with a shimano kit and oil. They are not TRP level good, but they are better than some basic brakes that you get on expensive bikes nowadays
My favorite thing is when I tell people my derailleur hanger is slightly bend and they say "oh just use that tool and straighten it" and I say back "well my rear wheel is bent worse and so I'd end up screwing the hanger up worse😂
if you ride downhill or race it's a good idea to have insurance even in the uk - if you have a physical job sick pay won't cover much if you end up with broken limbs 🤣
pop the springs off the wiper seals and slide them up the stantion before you try and put the fork back together. easier and less chance of damaging the lip.
Great video and you can tell he was soooo stoked. And super-cool those grips were off one of Seth's bikes, however, I've been riding ODI Rogue grips since 2003. If you took those off my bike I'd smack you. 😆
Was really hoping to see a service on the Teltro Orions, that's what I've got (along with all the other Polygon Siskiu owners), seems like everyone just scraps them.
It's sad to see a bike go without maintenance. The shock isn't a big deal to service. Pretty easy, like they said a pick set is mostly it, but I like using plastic pick sets the best so you don't scratch up any surfaces.
Probably only needed the shimano funnel to service the tektro brakes... Personally I'd take them over guide anything myself. I do have kits to service both though.

2 mistakes I found 1-Dont put a new chain on a old cassette if its 9ish speed or above. 9 speed may or may not work. anything below I have found it works and obviously the exception is when the cassette is near new. I had a 12 speed eagle cassette a while back that I ended up snaping the chain and bending pins after 200 miles(whole groupset was brand new) and the chain failed to mesh with the cogs I used the most 2- This bike is far from old. it has a tapered headtube, maestro linkage and a truaxle so this bike is definitely not old or shitty.
If you say the bike is far from old, then how did I put a new chain on an "old cassette"? You're talking like a bike shop salesman and I've never heard anyone recommend that.
@@EvansMTBSaga the less the speeds on a cassette the more you can get away with. The cassette didnt even look like it had worn off the coating so I think thats why it went well. That's fair though I probably would have rebuilt them over going to anything guide. I have had no luck with them nor has anyone I ride with.
I never had a problem with tektro brakes and they feel the same as any Shimano brake. If you hate Tektro also dont ride TRP just as a hint.
But Guide R are trash. No Stoppingpower. Mushy feel. I like Shimano oder Shigura men. Sry
Nice job! The 16 year old was genuinely happy, respectful, and appreciative for helping him out.
Agreed! Super rad kid
