  • I discovered the cardinal nest with bird eggs on May 11, 2022. And the two baby birds left the nest June 1, 2022.

We are cardinal watchers and lovers, also. Thanks for sharing your video - sweetest thing ever! The parents are so devoted to each other and to their babies. I hear they mate for life (I guess "until death do us part")

Baby birds don’t fly from the nest. They forge on the ground for several days hiding under bushes and still being attended to by their parents.
If you find a baby bird on the ground, don’t try to return it to its nest

That’s really cool. I just experienced cardinals growing up next to my window in a bush. It’s crazy how fast they grow. I’ve noticed how the male and female will land close by, make sure it’s safe, and then fly to their nest. Almost as if they didn’t want a predator to potentially follow them to their nest. I did have to scare off a red tailed hawk because the little ones jumped from the nest but weren’t quite ready to fly. The hawk tried to get one from my lawn. So I put on gloves and tried to put them back in the nest but they just jumped out. The nest I watched had 3. Anyways, thanks for the video!

This is phenomenal video. THANK YOU!! It's a great preview for the three cardinals that hatched here overnight. 3/31/24 - 4/1. The nest is at the base of fronds of a sago plant, which is next to a tall pine. Mom used the pine needles to make the nest. Babies are so so tiny on Day 1. Mom flies away if I'm within about 15 feet, so I avoid getting that close unless I can see that she's away. Have not seen PapaBird yet. I've learned so much about what to expect in the next couple of weeks from your video. If you get a chance, listen online to the cardinal's calls. There are quite a few. One of them sounds like "Hear Her Hear Her Hear". Another one sounds like "A WorMEE A WorMEE". Maybe that one is Mom telling Papa to get busy with dinner.

Even when baby birds fledge, generally they'll hang in the area while their feathers finish growing and the bird parents will continue to care for them and teach them how to bird

Nice video and informative timeline. We, too, have Cardinals nesting in our umbrella. We had one nest last year and I left the nest up thinking they might ‘re-nest’ again. Found out this early Spring that they don’t use the same nest twice, so took that nest down. Within a week, another nest started being built. After the little ones were gone, I took the nest down within a couple of days, and in a couple of weeks or so another nest started being built. I didn’t count the eggs on the first nest of this season, but nest 2 had 4 eggs and this current nest has 5 eggs. Seems odd, but on the 4 egg nest, 3 were spotted and one was a solid white’ish. This 5 egg nest has 4 spotted and 1 white’ish. I’m assuming it is the same pair of Cardinals nesting. They are really fun to watch. Like you, they will tolerate us; my wife and I have had coffee at the patio table and the female will chirp at us, but then come back to her nest, as I guess we’ve built a little trust. I do find that the momma will stay in the nest if I don’t show her my eyes.

They eat the poo so the snakes don’t smell the nest, they do their best to keep the nest as less smelly as possible.great footage

It also recycles the nutrients since they aren't able to fully digest it at a young age

Keeps the nest clean...nothing to be embarrassed about. They don't have a flushing toilet 😅

Could you give me details on what camera you have ?! This is so precious ! I’ve had two families have babies on my porch just in the last couple months ( I’m in NW Atlanta ), but my phone can’t capture much at all! My grandbabies would LOVE footage like this!
    Thank you so much !!

@@smkauthor could you tell me if the camera will record if power is out, or if you’re not home. Does that matter?
What do I need to save the video ?
