- I received a DVD set of Gravity Falls from Amazon which turned out to be a really good quality counterfeit fake. I ordered an original from Shout Factory to compare the two and show you how to spot differences. BTW I tried to leave a review on Amazon talking about the counterfeit sets and they responded that my review wasn't accepted to be posted on the site. Figures.
Make sure you order directly from Amazon and not a 3rd party seller. You can return it to Amazon if it's counterfeit.

Oh, what a relief! I just got my DVD set today after the recent announcement that they're being discontinued, and after hearing that Amazon has counterfeits, I was worried I may have got one. Thankfully it was directly from Amazon and not from a 3rd party seller, so I was safe, but it was still nerve-wracking after watching the start of this video, pausing it, and slooooowly checking the inside of the box to see if it was black!
But everything's legit, so all's well! Thank you so much for this detailed side-by-side video. I suspect a lot of people may get burned in the next year by these fakes after they are officially out of print, only now the prices are going to be seriously jacked up after March 2023.
Just got my box set today and I’m starting to think it might be fake thanks to this video lmfao, the cases are clear but the inside feels cheap and the discus had discoloring on them while having the blu ray player sometimes freeze. Glad to know this video can help others since I bought mine off eBay wish I knew what to do afterwards tho tbh
Speaking of how to identify between legit and counterfeit DVDs is that you can identify whether or not it has IFPI codes underneath the hub.
This is nuts! I just re-watched the entries series with commentary, and THEN had this video recommend to me. I got my DVD box set from Amazon, and it turns out it was a fake! I don't buy too many DVDs or Blu Rays so I didn't think much about the quality, because honestly for a fake it didn't seem too bad. But now that I know this, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. At least I was able to watch what I paid for, it's just too bad that the money didn't go to the right place. :P

Just found out about this and had to pause the video and run to check my blu-rays in a panic. Thankfully it's the real thing, which I really shouldn't have had to check since I do remember being very impressed with the quality of the box itself.

The only ‘damaged’ disc so far is season one disc 2. It crashes at one point during irrational treasure, but the rest of the episode works just as good
Shout factory discontinued these. Do you know by any chance where I could guarantee finding a real one to buy? blu ray would be nice!
What the heck!! My gravity falls dvds had audio problems so I got suspicious, found this video and lo and behold! White cardboard slipcase, Black cases, blu ray player screams when I put it in (I thought that was normal!) - I was sold a fake!! Thank you for this video!! I’m gonna try to get a refund and get a real one.
You can add audio problems to the list of clues - the audio rapidly FaDeS iN aNd OuT at weird times on the counterfeit version.

I believe I've bought a counterfeit one. I'm based in the UK but own a region free DVD player.
Mine came with clear plastic cases and the discs play well and silently. Literally the only giveaway is the quality of the printing on the discs.
Also, the To Dipper envelope was inside season 1, while the actual letter was inside season 2. All factory sealed. I was very confused. 😅
@film fan Nope, they've all played fine, multiple times. Definitely counterfeit though. :(

Amazon uses shared inventory for each sku, so if third party sellers are shipping/fufilled by amazon, their inventory and "amazon's" inventory are mixed together. Point is, you're better off buying directly from the publisher or a trusted retailer that doesn't do that, like best buy. Not sure if Walmart mixes inventory since they have been following amazon's footsteps so closely.
Question, if it says "sold by Amazon" then won't be counterfeit or could it still be?
I bought a counterfeit for £26... I'm going to cry. It has transparent cases too, but i knew the quality was surprisingly bad. I can't afford a replacement and I don't want a fake

Question is there fake Gravity Fall Blu-ray's out there? been wanted to get the Blu-ray for a while now but I'm not sure if there's fakes or not out there.
my copy is exactly the same as the official one, even came with the extra bits of merch, the only difference being the box being cheap cardboard (it's been a few years and it's bent now for some reason). it may be a fake, but i don't mind since the only flaw is the box being lower quality in material. other than that, the prints are great and i never noticed issues with playback, even came with the surround sound audio. i wonder if it may just be inconsistency at shoutfactory, and that many of the supposed 'fakes' are really just official products with some minor faults.
I just bought some on Amazon too - and I live in Germany :/ anyone knows how Amazon reacts, if a shop sells counterfeits to get the money back?
Terrifying. Just bought a copy and am waiting for it to come in. This popped up in my recommended.
I just replaced 4 counterfeit TV boxed sets, was totally unaware that even Shout Factory stuff gets counterfeited so accurately, the most reliable tell is to put a disk into a computer and check the file size of the disk, counterfeiters always cheap out on the disks and use single layer, which is only 4.x GB
Okay this is fascinating because I have a genuine copy of The Complete Series, but it is not this box set (it's not The Collector's Edition), therefore it's not separated into the three journals, i don't have a To Dipper letter and I also don't have a bonus features disk.
I should see if I can find a copy just so I can have the bonus features.
(the blu-ray copies are probably nicer than the dvds anyway)
The disc hole is off-centre, so it vibrates. I got an official disc from Kino Lorber recently that was like this (Fistful of Dynamite; the replacement they sent had the same problem). It's not at all an indication of genuineness.
Thank you for this video!!! I had bought the DVD set on amazon the other day and when I got it I thought it seemed off in many ways. It had clear cases but the plastic just seems loose. The Final straw was watching the third disc and it looked so compressed and pixelated that I immediately sent it back at Whole Foods. Trying again with a Blu Ray copy before just saying screw it I missed out

By any chance do you know if the Blu-ray version is better quality than the dvd? If it super noticeable, trying to decide which set to buy dvd or Blu-ray
The DVD is in 480p. The Blu-Ray is in 1080P HD
The BluRay will be noticeably clearer if you watch on a screen close to your face like on the computer or if you have like a 50 inch or larger TV. But it will only mostly be sharper edges. I usually get BluRays even for cartoon shows like this one but the box art for this show specifically looks better with full size dvd cases instead of the smaller blue bluray cases. I've been watching the show on DVD and you end up forgetting about the clarity and just get into the show. It is not that bad but I literally went for the DVD version just for the larger box size lol

I personally LOOKED for a fake set, as I’m based in England and wouldn’t be able to watch the real one on a standard DVD player here
My counterfeit DVDs look pristine and came in a clear case, but came in the cheaper outer sleeve so I guess I gotta buy a replacement
They might be caching on that people realize it's weird to have the black cases. It's a really obvious give away. If you can order straight from Shout Factory website, it might cost a little more but it will 100% be legit!

Correct I got it from a third party seller. Some people say direct from Amazon should be legit. Beware of third parties.

Thank you for the video!! Just bought the dvd set off an eBay seller and it was completely counterfeit!! Even the special features disc was wrong, it was the 1923 Helen Mirren show!! Like what?!!

Alot of unboxing I have seen the dipper letter is in the rectangle flap envelope but with clear dvd cases
there is a newer fake i got from one seller where it had clear cases but the disc quality was a giveaway

@@FilmFan-iv7sz some played ok others skipped or froze. i sent them all back. you could def tell they were fake if you had the original set. there is also a fake blu ray set now with blu rays that have been burned and printed on. they are all coming from china i am told along with MANY other series. i also got a fake land before time collection last week.

As I dunno how to tell if mine is fake. As it silver discs so I imagine it hard to fake.
How did you prove they fake and managed to send back. I only paid £13 for teen titans but postage would cost me £4 to send tracked lol

@@FilmFan-iv7sz some burnable blu rays have a black back yes. or like a purplish brown color. what i meant was all these fakes are coming out of china and then being resold by sellers on ebay and amazon. all the ones i sent back went back to us address' i contacted shout factory when it came to the gravity falls set and had their proof telling me they were fakes. if you can show ebay they are fake they are really good about refunding you for them and they usually tell you to dispose of them if the seller will not refund you. im in the usa and all the ones i have had all were shipped to me from the usa and ebay will provide a free return label. in china they can also make these fake sets with the original style silver backed discs as they have access to them. so then it becomes even harder to tell. this is becoming a huge issue all over the world though

Is the barcode at the top right nearer to the too edge right? If yes then it’s original, also check if your DVDs are dual layer or not. The fake ones will always be single layer.
I wonder if you watched the fake videos? The real dvds should be dual layered, whereas fakes will often be single layered and use a lower bit rate, meaning less detailed picture in the video (saves time and money for the counterfeiters). What I've heard is if the back of the disc has two sets of numbers and two barcodes, it's dual layer, one set is single layer. From the brief time you flipped the discs over, I could see two sets on the real, but was unable to get a good look at the fake one. Some experienced dvd watchers notice the difference just watching them with nothing else (haven't seen anyone mention this show but heard for others).

I got bought a Counterfeit DVD version since July 2020 that I didn't realize it was NOT original even I test thru computer all of discs of entire complete Collector's Edition was all modified, downscaled the video (the entire first and second was good but a 30% sure of pixelated like 3.5mbps video bitrate) and fit into Single Layer/DVD-5 (as storage capacity of a disc was 4.35 GB) but the codebars and numbers of the disc has two rows that I thought its Dual Layer/DVD-9.
And besides, I don't want to throw out this counterfeit but I was gonna use them for displaying merch, not to use to watch all of them when I need to buy another and original!

I notice a lot of cheaper versions on eBay and Amazon but decided to purchase it on Shout! for legitimacy despite it being of a higher price. After hearing that the complete series collector edition would be discontinued by March 2023 I went and order a copy.

Yup, definitely fake. The box was flimsy, the dvd cases are low quality, and the to: Dipper envelope was empty lol. The scammers must’ve watched this because they actually updated their cases to be clear instead of black, but the discs themselves are super faded and the plastic pieces inside keep snapping off and falling out
I believe if a product bootleg product looks like a legit product dvd. There probably using the same factory to make the real dvd. Or equipment

Not exactly. The quality of the set lowered, and depending on how lucky you get, The discs may actually work. You probably heard his DVD/BD Player was struggling a lot to try and read it, and who knows? It could even cause potential harm to a disc player you try to read it on! I really wouldn't want to put a warped disc into any DVD/BD Players I own, The lens would get scratched in an instant! Not to mention that coping and selling one's work w/o permission for personal profit is *illegal.* Longer story short, Go with official. Sure, it may be a tad bit more expensive, but you will save yourself a LOT of trouble and hassle. Take it from someone who got the fake version. (Season 1, Disc 3 can't even be read!)
The menu is gone , the quality decreases , the fact you didnt get a real copy and the discs corrupt
The one thing he didn't do was to pop it in a DVD drive on a computer and check the size. Discs in a set like this will, with virtual certainty, be dual layer discs, which CAN contain just under 9GB of data. Dual layer discs cost more to replicate than single layer discs (which have a max of about 4.7GB,) and that's the main area in which bootleggers save money. Yes, there are odd discs out there that are single layer, shorter films with no special features or DTS soundtrack, which were common in the early days of the format, but if they're getting six 22-minute episodes on a disc-about an hour fifty, plus commentary audio tracks-they're very likely to be using dual layer. Cramming that much on one layer is going to compress the hell out of the video, especially on a cartoon.
