I really prefer when you do these videos on an interesting topic or something specific to Australian life that I’d never know about unless I watched the video. Obviously I come for the tingles but often I stay for the lesson ha
I know I'm in the minority here, but I do appreciate the no gum chewing! It's fine with it, but I enjoyed this video just a tiny bit more without. No pressure though, if this is the only video you do going forward without the gum, I wouldn't mind :) Thanks for the quality videos!
Thank you Aussie man for the weekly videos they are always so good would you ever consider drawing on a bigger scale such as a map of Europe would be very cool thank you for all your hard work!!💙
I remember watching your last election video when it came out, I have probably watched it 10 times since. Looking forward to watching this another 10 times.
Your last video on the election process was my favorite for some reason. I can tell this one’s gonna be my #2 go-to now. It’s so interesting to someone from America. Thanks again!
I love both ways! I just enjoy your videos and all the little snacks, trinkets and info you bring us. I'm happy with or without gum, thanks for looking out for all of your audience.
Always really interesting to hear about this - loved the original video! Here in the UK we’ve got our local elections coming up to decide our local councils on May 5th. Keep up the great work mate
Looks like a win for Labour. Great video, I wish we did it like this in the US. Mandatory voting would at least make people inform themselves a bit. Cheers!
Thanks Aussie man, love this video. Question on the compulsory voting - are people allowed to spoil their ballot purposefully or would this also result in a fine?
Interesting question, the informal vote in Australia is around 5% to 6% for each election. Although I've never heard of anyone being fined - it is a secret ballot, so it would be hard to know or even prove if it was done purposefully...
Appreciate the no gum, sir! A side question for you. Are politics in Aus as divisive as they are in the US? It seems like having your voting system might make things a bit less bipartisan, but I'm an outsider so I don't know the details.
@@AussieAsmrMan Its pretty divisive here, but mostly online. In person, people largely get along well. Though some conversation topics do bring about conflict.
Considering the upcoming referendum later this year, perhaps when the time comes around you could make a video similar to this one where you explain how the referendum system works/examples of past referendums? Maybe you could even show the ballot paper, if you decide to vote postally again! Your election videos are my personal favourites out of all of your videos which is why I'm suggesting this 😝 - great tingles and very interesting to watch!!
An interesting thing I found out the other day through the AEC website was what does/does not count as a "formal" vote... one of the points on there was that technically a senate vote with only one party ticked above the line (or at least six candidates numbered consecutively below the line) would count as formal; it's known as a "vote-saving" measure. So even though the instructions say to number at least six above/twelve below the line, you could actually get away with voting for fewer candidates. Although of course if you only number one party above the line and the party happens to be a very minor one (i.e. one that has hardly any chance of actually winning a seat) then your vote obviously won't have the preferences to fall back on and will simply be "put to one side". It is a different case with the house of representatives ballot however: the only box you're allowed to leave empty is the box for your least favourite/last preference. I'm assuming this is because your preferences would never ever go to your last choice; worst-case scenario would be that your vote would transfer to your second-least favourite choice. Thought I'd like to share since I found this interesting and had never known this before!
Yes, that is interesting! A lot of ballot papers that you would think would be informal can actually be counted, which is a good, common sense approach.
The way you laughed over the thought of numbering every box to annoy the person counting the votes makes me think you have done that before 😂 thank you for educating us on how use vote over there
I’m a below the line voter as I really want the candidates I like least to know how much I dislike them (not that they know how votes for who, our ballots are not identifiable, but I feel better about it lol). This year is proving a real challenge to decide who I preference dead last.
Lol, when at 16:12 you said you were gonna open up the ballot paper, I imagined you coming in with your trusty scissors and doing some cutting and counting of the ballot
Can you do a video on wars in or wars that Australia has fought in? I don’t know any of that history and they don’t really teach it at school, great vid.
I voted no chewing gum not because I don’t like it, but I thought it would be cool to hear something different. Hopefully you didn’t take the votes as a “the chewing gum sounds bad”
It’s interesting how many anti corruption parties there are, and how very specific some of them are (animal welfare, legalising cannabis, senior citizens…). I’d never seen a ballot presented that way before, what happens if you don’t tick enough boxes? Is your vote invalid? Thanks for a great video as usual, however you do them they always come out great 👍 i didn’t expect to suddenly become interested in Australian politics at 2:15 am, yet here I am. Cheers from the literal other side of the Earth!
If you don't number enough boxes (say only 1, 2 and 3) then your vote will still count, but only the 1, 2 and 3 preferences will be included in the count.
The establishment of an anti corruption commission is a hit button election issue this year, and we’ll overdue. Worth mentioning to that we have full value preferential voting here in Aus, so if you do your 1-6 above or 1-12 below, and your first choice doesn’t get enough votes to obtain a “quota” then your #2becomes your #1 and so on. In the house of reps (small ballot for lower house) is similar but you’re only voting for one candidate in the lower house for your local electorate. Contrary to how media tries to spin it, we can only vote directly for our Prime Minister if the leader of the party that forms government is the candidate for your electorate.
Great video! Without being too political however, I'm glad I'm not Australian, having seen how lovely your politicians can be, over the last few years. Nightmare fuel.
Unfortunately, a lot of the people in the below the line groupings are throwaway candidates runnings simply so that the party or group can have a square above the line (generally requires two or more candidates), most Aussie voters go above the line, so it’s very powerful to have a group voting square. Almost all of those candidates BTL will have little to no public profile, so hard for Steve to research.
Missing the chewing gum soooo much! Wow i really didnt think its gonna make such difference.... i actually turned off the video, first video of Steve's ever, that i didnt watch till the end. Also this voting ballon topic wasnt the best choice i think. And especially without the gum, unwatchable
I don't care what anyone says, if you like the sound of someone chewing food or gum you're weird. Never heard anyone like loud eaters with their mouth open, its gross. Australia fines you for not voting? That is an awful idea. Forcing people to vote who don't want to vote is a bad idea. I wonder, the ballot lists all the parties, but I am assuming that only a few have any real chance at winning or? Maybe I am too used to American politics where you essentially have only two choices, which is basically one choice for so many people.
I'm a gum man personally, but nice to consider your whole audience, that's one of the best things about this channel! Cheers.
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Couldn't agree more

Awesome! Thank you!
I actually prefer it without. Can’t quite pinpoint it but this sound just works better for me.
I also prefer it without, eating sounds aren't for me
Happy Friday! I love these videos where we get to learn about everyday things in Australia.
Thanks, glad you like them!
Love when you talk about all things Australia. Loved your first election ballot vid. Love the education.
Thanks and thanks for sharing!
I reckon you are one of the most relaxing youtubers out there, best aussie asmr for sure 🤩
Wow, thank you!

Bula from Fiji! Literally typed in two of my favorite things "ASMR rugby" and your videos showed up! Great stuff! 🙌🏼
Bula from Australia! I think this is the first comment from Fiji on any of my videos.
I actually used this video as a tutorial to vote for the first time, so thank you!
You're welcome!
PERFECT VIDEO , thank you 😁👍, thanks for making a no gum chewing video 😎
Glad you liked it!!
Thanks for getting back to your roots! Loved it 🙂

No, I just think it's a personal preference...some people like chewing gum, some don't.

That's actually a good idea for a party!

you should just do another video of this but go over all of the people under jus read the names and maybe say a little about them

Funnily, 58 vs 42% is exactly the French presidential election result! Macron got 58% ... So no chewing today then? Ok suits me as well.
Thanks for pointing that out, it's an interesting coincidence!
With that many choices it's gotta be hard to figure out who's going to screw you over the least
A sad truth
Just do every other video with chewing gum. Then both halves of your audience are happy.
