      Which bike costs that much? She was riding a Tern GSD? At ebikeshop I see it’s just over £5k: ‘Tern GSD S10 Electric Cargo Bike Bosch 2023 - £5,099.00’
      Quality ebikes are relatively expensive. Economy of scale, tech, design and expensive parts. Early motorcycles were similarly expensive. A (1903) BSA motorcycle was “Yours for fifty quid, or £56.10s with the clutch” . Which was more than a year’s earnings for most*
      *Average income per head, which had risen from £34.9 in 1874 to £42.7 in 1900, was higher than anywhere else. Yet, at home, Britain's wealth was very unevenly distributed, with half the nation's income going to one-ninth of its population.

    Automakers in my country (and in many others too I believe) stopped selling entry level cars because they don't make much money selling those.They could be digging their own grave since this could be a big push towards e-bikes. Too bad we don't have any electric cargo bikes here yet.

    • @Chrus600
      @Chrus600 Рік тому +6

      It’s also due to emission regulations (ironically, since a massive SUV with a titchy battery for its hybrid system is way worse than a little VW Up!). Small cars struggle to incorporate the full hybrid tech in the space available, especially at a reasonable price, so the manufacturers are ditching them.
      It’s just like when the old huge hybrid Lexus SUVs were congestion charge exempt, all just gaming the system.
      This is before incorporating the cost of road damage of a 2 ton SUV versus a 1 ton city car too, or their risk of outright killing anything they run into on account of high bonnets and physical mass.

    • @NextNate03
      @NextNate03 Рік тому

      @Chrus600 Not really, at least in USA.
      Reason why some or most major car manufacturers are discontinued small entry-level cars because more and more people are switching over to SUVs and SUVs has higher profit margins then cars do.
      Then SUVs and trucks has less stricter emissions or gas mileage regulations.
      Do you know the top selling Hybrid for the last 15+ years is Toyota Prius?
      There alo have been countless of compact Hybrid vehicles in the last 20+ years.
      Before most companies had created artificial inflation (most of the time) during C-19 by raising the prices on everything, you could buy a brand new Hybrid Car for under 19k USA dollar.
      Now, the cheapest new Hybrid vehicle you could buy cost just under 23k.
      You can save alot of money on buying a used Hybrid or even a Electric car.
      They problem is the battery packs might need to be replaced soon (1 to 4+ years).
      It's going to cost up to 7,500 for Hybrid or 30k+ for electric.
      EDIT:
      It is also easier to increase the gas mileage in cars then it is with SUVs and Trucks.

      I’m going to take a wild guess and say Laura had her saddle low in order to have as much reach to the ground as she had her kid on the back. It’s a confidence boost knowing that she can drop her leg and take the weight of the bike + pillion.

    • @tubecated_development
      @tubecated_development Рік тому +3

      @@justkol That’s the beauty of having not only a stepthru-frame (slide fwd and yr foot is on the ground) but also the Tern GSD has a fairly crank-fwd/laid-back design which allows a rider to make use of leg-extension yet also be able to have both feet flat on the floor while seated (ie no need to compromise with ridiculously-low saddle)

  • @JH-pe3ro
    @JH-pe3ro Рік тому +4

    I agree that the saddle is too low, but I'd estimate it's within a 25mm range - enough to only matter on particularly long rides. I'm always riding bikeshares so on every ride, I'm adjusting the height across different generation frames, checking for collapsed saddle adjustments, testing for chains in dangerously poor condition, and I've also gotten the comparison between pedal and pedal assist when riding the ebikes. With the ebike the pedal assist kicks in on the first stroke and magically increases your power output, so you just don't care a lot about efficiency until you hit a steep grade. Biasing low is better for commuting. A lower center of gravity makes stopping easier, connection to pedals and ankle stability is ensured, scooting starts are easier. High saddles tend to be what professional fitting biases towards, but the rationale for it when commuting is all wrong.

    Great video, nice to see mum's perspective. Wondering if a new kind of bike tracker would help people like that, i.e. one that is put well into the frame of the bike and "energy harvests" to get the power to chirp it's position if stolen. If the tracker were installed in the bottom tube that goes from front to back and "sealed in, then it would be extremely difficult to remove. A blinky LED could make it obvious to potential thieves that the bike is locked and track-able. A phone app that notifies unplanned bike movement and then tracks the bike would make it easier to nab thieves in the act. Perhaps bike insurance companies could help design/distribute and sponsor such a device...

    Well done Eilis, this is just the sort of information and encouragement that people need to get stuck into alternatives, BUT £9K including bits and bobs? Madness, how can they justify such a price? A new Kia Picanto is only twice that. (My old KP is worth £2.5K, my costs are tax/ins £200/yr, and we stretch the services in conjunction with our service garage). We use this car to transport elderly friends and family to the hospital and such, so no one needs to spend £40K on a car to drive to the shops. We need to stop people from being ripped off. Another thought is that "Mum" should ALWAYS wear hi-vis when transporting a child. A grey fleece just doesn't cut it, it hides her child from the front and puts them both at risk. Hi-vis should be mandatory for all cyclists (same for helmets), drivers have to wear seat belts, we all have to contribute. Great video, more like this, but please also do some vids riding in the rain, we get a lot in the UK and people should think about it before thinking that riding is an all-year-round joy, there are different kit and skills required to do it safely. Rural dwellers need cars though, my nearest town is 12 miles away.

      I agree with you on the ridiculous prices of e-bikes. It's hard justify the costs of these premium cargo and utilitarian e-bikes. You could buy a second hand Nissan Leaf that will carry 5 people plus generous cargo for a much longer range than that tern.
      Even "big" name ebike manufacturers like Tern or Riese & Muller are small in overall production.
      I really feel that the major car manufacturers like Ford, Volkswagen and Toyota need to just come up with half a dozen e-bike models and churn them out by the millions the same as they do for cars at half the cost all of these little e-bike manufacturers can.
      Because otherwise, the Chinese are going to take over this market. And if the quality and prices are right then that's going to be a good thing.
      And that bike needs to be insured so that's another additional cost. Plus there will be a a couple of hundred bucks of maintenance required every few thousand miles and probably a new motor and or battery after 10,000 miles so another £1,000+
      These are real and expected expenses of running a premium ebike.
      Many of the "cheap" e-bikes with unique proprietary components sold are just dumped as not worth repairing when they have problems.

    I would love to get rid of my car and use more public transport. But the train service in this country is awful and overpriced for the service you get compared to comparable European countries.
    Trying to use the train and get your bike on as well (to enable a journey to be joined up) is very stressful and unreliable.
    I’ve just done a 2 week cycle trip over the Hebrides and the hardest part of the journey was attempting to organise the train journey. It’s awful.
    Next time I might use my car, I don’t want to buy this choice is being removed from me. It’s like being forced to own and use a private car.

    I looked up the motor, its a Bosch Cargo Line, and it claims 85 Nm. Well this cannot possibly be gained from 250w motor. I don't know if brown envelopes have been passed but just have a look at the Nm of 250 motors, the legal limit in the UK

      We do also make videos pressuring the London Mayor and the UK Government to make scooters (which are more affordable than e-bikes) legal. If we tried to please everybody all the time, then we'd end up pleasing nobody.

    Child seat perched above a rear wheel is the worst way to carry a child. He sits very high, in case of fall the potential energy adds to the kinetic, the bike is not stable when leaning on the kickstand, the child has zero visibility and is squeezed against the parent's back. Trailers and cargo bikes are much safer, comfortable and practical.
    Also, tell Lora to lift up that saddle if she wants to have working knees in ten years.

      15 minute cities are a fantastic idea. Or as the Dutch and Danish call them, cities. What's the conspiracy theory again? Something about a Jewish cabal headed by George Soros wishing to control out lives through city planning or something.....Here's a much more realistic conspiracy. The opposition to sustainable cities is funded by the oil, car and road building multinationals.

    Are vibration dampeners available for the childseats? I do think cycling can be beneficial for children's + parent's health, but watching those kids bounce over some of those bumps in the video makes me curious if the constant shocks could have a negative affect on brain health and development akin to what is being discovered about the negative effects of repeated hits in American Football (NFL), ice hockey, etc? I feel like a simple suspension system, even as simple as some rubber blocks mounted under the childseats, could help to alleviate this issue?

      @@tubecated_development Not all at once. Single large impacts or continual vibration over time can result in the same style of brain injury, especially when it comes to developing brains in young children.
