No probLEM. I’ve been capping tubing with that method for years. I got tired of trying to hold the cap level with pliers while tacking in place. The wire trick works great.
That's a great idea, using the welding wire to support the cap. I can see myself using that for other applications where some support is needed. (And right to the point. Only one minute!)
I make the cap smaller than the tubing so it fits inside the tubing. Use a magnet to hold the cap in place while you tack it in place, then remove the magnet and finish the welding. Doing it this way means most of the welding ends up on the inside of the tubing, so its very easy to grind the cap nice and smooth, grind a bit of chamfer on the outside face of the tubing if you want.
Love the trick of just tacking the wire to hold the cap over the end. Nice!

Exactly what I do, looks so much better when you have a nice smooth bevel

If painting use a da sander instead of a flap disk. Less imperfections to show up in the paint.
If looking for perfect paint on a street rod or show car, that would definitely be a good move.
