Great video Ty! You were laying the smack down again. Nice bows, always have to keep a few for the grill or smoker. I'm a HUGE fan of the Ugly Stik GX2's. I have both light and medium's and fish mostly with the light. I love how sensitive and strong they are. I really wish you were heading for Indiana. I'll save a chair for you every time though.

+MrRojoneck Thanks man, I have really liked the ugly stik. However, I think I'm liking my new Abu Garcia Veritas combo a tiny bit better! Both will forever have a spot in my ice bucket.

Great work man. Wishing I could get back up there for one more shot at some decent fish. We just had our second son so I am thinking that my ice fishing days are numbered. Haha. Keep hook'em man. At least I can watch you get into some big trout. Have fun and be careful out there!

Cam Carter Congrats on the new addition to the family, that's awesome! I messaged you on your youtube account a couple weeks ago to see if you had been out, and try to get something lined up so we could get together but never heard back. I was up there again on friday and the ice was still thick, but as warm as it will be this week, I think it's winding down. I did manage to land a pretty good rainbow, you'll have to check out my most recent video when you get a minute. Congrats again, thanks for keeping in touch!

Great video! I am a die hard fly fishermen but I have been thinking of trying ice fishing this year. I have always been put off though by the amount of equipment most guys use on the ice. Things like tents, heaters, power auger , ect... I mostly fish solo so the thought of needed a Wheeler or snow mobile to haul everything out has put me off trying it. I really like your minimalist approach in this video and this method really appeals to me. A couple questions.
1-Do you use electronics? I have a Hummingbird Fish Buddy I use on my kickboat that I suppose would work on the ice.
2- What kind of hand sugar? Does hole size matter?
3- What lures and how do you rig them?
Again great video! I'm now excited to try it this winter.
    Mark

+Mark Memmott Mark, thank you for the compliment and questions. Ice fishing is a great thing to pursue in the winter as it's a little cold at times to be stripping line on your fly rod. As with most outdoor hobbies, and as you eluded to, you can get carried away with gear. I am guilty of having a fair amount of gear: heaters, tents, sleds, etc... But sometimes, a minimalist approach is quite nice. So, lets answer your questions.
1- Do you use electronics? No, however I don't recommend this. There are small very portable units that would be great to have, such as the "Showdown" from MarCum. Your Humminbird is also fairly portable and would probably be worth bringing along.
2- What kind of hand auger? I found an eskimo hand auger on KSL last year for cheap, $20. However, if you're going to buy used, check the blades as they are the most expensive part, but are replaceable. If you can find a Strikemaster brand auger, they are worth buying, I have grown up using this brand and have drilled countless holes with it. Does hole size matter? Kind of. I opted to go with the 8 inch hole simply because I fish Bear Lake when it freezes and you can get into some pretty good sized lake trout. So if you frequent Flaming Gorge, Bear Lake, Fish Lake, and anticipate getting into bigger sized fish, the 8 inch is a good size. If you are mainly fishing for rainbow and cutthroat with other panfish on the radar, a 6 inch would be perfect. The smaller the diameter, the easier it is to drill.
3- What lures and how do you rig them? I like to use a simple ice jig or ice fly as you will see them labeled in the sporting goods stores. I tip these with either a meal worm, wax worm, or maggot. Or sometimes tube jigs work well around the 2 inch size, also tipped with bait listed above.
A few thoughts: One thing that I have really enjoyed lately is a device called the JawJacker as seen in this video. It helps to have another line in the water to narrow in on what the fish are hitting. This device also helps you hook up on a lot more fish and is really portable. I don't get any compensation from JawJacker, I have just really enjoyed that product. And lastly, if you have room to store a sled in the offseason, it's a great thing to have to take your gear out on the lake.
Sorry if this is a lengthy reply, but hopefully it helps. I am no master at this, so take these recommendations as just one guys opinion. Thanks again!

+Daniel Allgaier Ya, no problem. I also remembered that towards the end of last season I also picked up an Abu Garcia Veritas combo in a 28 inch medium as well. I only fished it on one outing, but it felt really nice, perhaps better than my Ugly Stik.

      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

Casey Fitzgerald Aw man, that's not good, sorry to hear that Casey. Just curious, were you tipping them with a wax or meal worm and jigging them? If that didn't work, maybe try a 2 inch white tube jig tipped with a meal or wax worm. Also, there is nothing wrong with putting a night crawler on and letting it sit still just off the bottom. Caught a 7.5lb rainbow trout at the berry that way... hopefully that gives you a few more things to try. Let me know how it goes.

+Tyler Stoker I picked mine up at Sportsman's Warehouse. I have loved mine, it's been fun. Usually I just set out another rod and try to keep an eye on it, I have missed a lot of fish that way. This thing has been a great addition. Thanks for watching!

+Casey Fitzgerald Hi Casey. I use three different rods. In this video, I have a Berkley Lightning Ice rod in a medium action set up on the JawJacker. And I'm jigging an Ugly Stik in medium action as well. At the end of last season, I picked up a Abu Garcia Veritas is medium action. Thanks for the question.
