My horse is 19 and she is still atheletic!! I am 62. This walking work helps ME with my seat, contact and connection with her. I haven’t ridden for a long time. Happy this gentle way is good for both of us 🙏
Thank you so much for your videos they are so useful. A new yielding one would be great. Found the audio on other difficult. Also would like to know what parts of the body you are moving in yield. Do you place more weight on which side of the saddle etc 🙏
Hi! My mare is 20 and I'm 68. This is a really good video Amelia. Lots of ideas of putting several walk exercises into a session. I can also play around with these anywhere on my little farm. Just doing them out of the arena is more interesting for both of us. This is not boring at all and really good for my horse. I love the nice halts on Kensington!! Very pretty.
My Morgan is 10 years old but he has not had very much training. I have been doing some of these exercises before seeing this video today. I am glad to know i jave been doing the right things but it is also very helpful to be more focused on the details lointed out in this video. Thanks for taking the time to make such informative videos!
Perfect video for bringing back my 22-year-old ride who has just recovered from a mild lower leg injury and is slowly (keyword is slowly) working back up to her trot again. Thanks, Amelia!-your videos rock!
This is great. I've had my 26 year old since he was a coming 4 year old. Trained and showed up to Int 1, then heel stuff and ringbone, so I retired him. New farrier approach has gotten him sound enough to ride again. This is basically what I do with him, as well as the 29 year old that I'm also riding. But it's nice to know from a pro that I'm on the right track. Thank you!
Love this! My mare is 19 and has lymphoma so she has some special issues. We only walk now. We walk around the 20 acre property which has a few hills, but also go in the arena and do some patterns or go into our 'playground' and walk around the obstacles. I mix in some turn on the forehand and rein back as well. She absolutely loves it and has good muscling just from walking.
Love your videos Amelia! My mare is 23 this year and I am 24 🤍 I bought her when I was sixteen with the money I was going to use for college, then she paid me back in scholarships 😉 Love my golden oldies, my first horse was 26 when I got her and she was the best horse anyone could’ve ever asked for. I’ve been so blessed with my older horses!
My horse is 29 and all of these have been great for him! He is still in great shape and still walk, trot, canters, and jumps but we are trying to let him start to slow down because he is an old guy. My 12 thoroughbred and 6 Welsh have also been enjoying these!
Great exercises Amelia! My horse is 21 and needs a longer warmup as he (& I) get older. I love these walking exercises on our gentle days. I call these “long & low” days to get him to stretch down. Thank you !
Thank you for this! My horse is 18 but still quite reactive and easily distracted. I enjoy walk work, I don’t find it boring at all! When he is moving well he has a long, swinging stride that moves my seat like a wave and that feels so awesome. Always a challenge with him to get the stretch on the buckle though!
26yr old doing Grand Prix till a year & half ago and has had some time off in the mountains now bringing him back into shape for his family. I have been doing all these things as we got started, I am really glad for the confirmation 💕 as I too had been out to pasture… but for far longer than him, 12 years! 😢 Technology in the world has changed so much since I was an assistant trainer. Back then!!🎉 The access to quality trainers as yourself for free is truly incredible 🎉 and I hope it helps more people have enriching lives with Horses. It’s definitely helping me as I return to the greatest love of my life .❤ Amelia you have been my favorite, thank you!
Thanks Amelia, My horse is 17 and I can spend to much time at the trot and canter. This is a great demonstration on getting Mirage loose and on the bit in a really beneficial way.
Great video. So much softness and relaxation can be created by taking her advice. My old trainer used to say that everything you want to do at the trot and canter needs to be perfected at the walk first, so spend a lot of time doing it at the walk.
My horse just turned 6, and we are brand new to Dressage. I love your walk exercises to practice my seat position, and what I do with my hands, legs and elbows. It’s soooo different than hunter/jumpers. Thank you 😊
Great video, I have a 28 year old mare that I still ride. She really helps me work on my position. I seem to need more time in the saddle then my main riding horse needs worked. And she loves the attention, she does not want to be just a pasture pet.

Found this sooo helpful thank you. So glad I’ve found your channel. I have started riding a 17 yr old show horse that hasn’t worked in a few yrs.. neither have I and we’re gaining fitness together so this is lovely. Love the birds chirping in the back too 🥰
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage ☺️ we did these exercises today and incorporated the trot . Keep him focused and once he knew I was asking for a big stretch he kept doing it. So lovely. Thank you. Great session
Great advice for an older horse - or for any horse that just needs a day to reboot. I have a regular walk day in the program with my horse (18 years young). I'll warm him up on a long rein just as you showed and will progress to leg yields, walk halt transitions, longitudinal stretches, etc. If he's feeling pretty good, we'll do a sequence of shoulder fore, shoulder in, shoulder in-to-renvers, travers, all going large or on nothing smaller than a three loop serpentine. I call it our Horsey Yoga workout. :)
I have two gaited mares. These walking exercises are just what they need to improve their other gaits. I would be further ahead focusing on the exercises in the walk for both my horses and myself. Thank you for making a better world for riders and horses.
This is very helpful as I have two older geldings, 20 & 23. Sometimes I just don’t have the energy for a high intensity workout so it’s good to see that we can still have a productive ride without trotting and cantering. Thanks Amelia.
My boy is 11 but out of work for a few months, my anxiety is kicking in so you've given me something to start back on without stressing him or me. Will watch this again just before I ride. Find your instruction and videos so easy to understand. Much appreciated!
My horse is 22 and has done a lot of miles as a Connemara jumping pony. We only hack and a little school work now. He loves hacking and is very forward going. He can’t bend very well now so it’s great to have some ideas on how to keep him well. Marching is something he loves so I’ll do that as he is very stiff thank you - funny we pronounce it a serpent’i’ne in the UK ha ha. I’ve also been trying to say ‘head down’ which seems to help him stretch too. Thanks for this fantastic video x
Thank you Amelia. My lusitano gelding is 18. He is fabulous and we are working towards our bronze medal. We will be showing third level next year. Hopefully we will receive at least one of the scores. Love your videos.
OTTB 12yrs recovered from track double leg fracture - I am 58 (stoke survivor) and the 2 of us are Recovering and Walking together. Thank you for your video guides. Much appreciated.
Amelia, your videos are such treasures, THANK YOU for being there! I'm in the process of buying my first horse after years of riding school horses and half-boards, and of course I'll start safely and slowly with my new horse in the arena, and that is just perfect! She's 11.
Great video and timely. My ottb is only 16, have had him 12 years. Tore his suspensory this winter just out in pasture and have just learned his injury also shows degeneration in BOTH hind suspensories!. So walking and trail riding is now what we are limited to as he can tolerate. Thank you for the reminder that there is so much we can still do at the walk.
I am so happy to see this video! My Paint gelding is 20 years old, and just did his first rated show earlier this month. I was looking for ways to help him with suppleness that wouldn't be hard on him since he was a western pleasure horse in his previous life. I do a lot of walk in our warm up, so this will give it more focus. Thank you!
My vet said my horse is “aged” and the dentist said he’s 20+ when I told him his ad said he was 17. He’s a wonderful old man and I’m excited to try these exercises with him!
Hi just subscribed and absolutely !!!!! loving ALL the videos, my Aust Stock Horse is 9 but I believe to many people forget the walk it is so important especially dressage and I am 61 she is prelim novice and I hope to take her up through all the levels before I get too old !!!!!
Thank you for sharing! I love hearing from riders. And age is just a number, that's the best part about dressage, you can do it forever! Are you coming to my webinar on rider position today? Would love to have you: amelianewcombdressage.com/free-rider-position-webinar-23/
My horse is 21. I am almost 60 and we have been together for all of her life. She has been ridden western, done a bit of jumping (not with permission, mind you), been ridden bareback for 10 years (finally had a saddle built for her), and now dressage. She is an Appy/QH/Percheron cross and we are perfect for each other. I love that, through dressage, we have managed to change her body weight/muscle distribution and helped her to become fitter and healthier. My coach and I haven't cantered her in 2 years because her body and balance were just not ready.
I have just got a new horse, an 11-yr-old percheron cross trained to drive and used for driving and trail riding before I bought her. This purchase followed buying a horse (a thoroughbred whose background I knew virtually nothing about) that was too much for my skill level and getting bucked off twice (once breaking my collarbone), and before that not riding for at least 8 years apart from dressage lessons in 2020-21. My confidence is pretty low and my fear level is pretty high. I need to build up my confidence and until I know this horse really well (what she knows and doesn't know and how she behaves in an arena) I love the idea of doing all of this at the walk. When I took lessons, I wanted to be able to get on the lesson horse and spend ten minutes just at a walk, feeling the horse, getting my seat and position and balance right, breathing and calming myself. I rarely got to do that in a lesson, but even if I could grab 2 minutes, it was better than nothing. This video, along with your video on ground exercises for confidence, will give me some things I can do, and make progress in her training, to regain the confidence I used to have before moving on to trot and canter work.
Hi Amelia, I want to thank you for all of your videos they’ve been so helpful and complementary to my lessons. I have two pair horses sisters that are 14 and 15. We did our first show this past weekend and we progressed with every ride top score being a 69%! I’m very happy with how we both performed even in the pouring rain. I hear your voice in my ear many times while I’m riding. Thanks again and keep What you are doing.
Great video! I returned to the show ring this summer after a 9 year hiatus. Competing at 2nd level with a 21 year old gelding. We are doing well and given his breeding and build (TB/Paint/Clyde) he is quite athletic but I received judge's comments about increasing "lateral suppleness" .... that will be part of our goal over the winter and your videos will be a wonderful tool to help us school! Thank you!
I have a 15 year old that's speedy and sensitive to leg and can even be a bit stressed under saddle, and an 18 year old ex lesson horse that is dull to any leg pressure. I just moved them home and I'm going to try some of these exercises with them!

My horse is only 11, but we are starting our show experience and we need to practice the walk and keeping my horses attention. I am having knee replacement in 2 weeks, so when I start back riding, these exercises will be good for us to practice. My trainer will be riding him for about 2 months and then I will start back. Thank you!

My horse is 17. This is also great for building a riders confidence in working with your horse and building your own balance in the seat and being aware of where your body positions are.
Egads, those are lovely halts! Thanks for the guidance Amelia, I hope to bring my green OTTB HJ to you for dressage training! I think I would love one of your clinics!
This is exactly what I do for like 90% of my lessons. The horse I ride is only 9, but *I* am 37 and had my second back fracture at 34 😅 plus it's been over 100° most days for the last month and a half. You can do SO MUCH at the walk!
Sunny, the horse I ride, is about 20 or so. Thank you for some ideas on how to work with him. I just started riding again last year after 40 years away from the horse world and I need to up my skills! I’m Sunny’s only rider and limited to riding in one small ring, so we need to keep things fresh.
30 plus and he is still doing a great job - I'm excited that you did this I want to keep him as long as possible and as fit as possible but not work him that anything happens

Our girl is 23 so thanks for this Amelia. 🥰
This was awesome. My horse is 17, but just getting back into work after 4 years off, so this seems perfect.
My horse is 24 and a dream horse. We thank you so much for this advice!!!
My horse is 15 but recovering from some soreness in her back and we’re working on walk only right now so this is great!!
My horse is 23 and I really needed this!!
Good! I'm glad it is helpful
My girl just turned 27! These are awesome!
Thank you for this, my main ride is 19. Thank you for this video....... it will be perfect for her.....
She just turned 4, but we loove your videos and all of your tips:)
Thank you!
That sounds like an excellent plan! Keep me updated!
With my horse I had / have to spend a lot of time in the walk. You're right, it's not boring when you're focused on the specifics.
That's it! There's so much nuance to working with our horses, staying at walk doesn't need to be boring!
My OTTB is only 15, but has all the track injuries. He needs a lllooonnnnggg warm up. Great tips Amelia!
I have a 15 year old that's speedy and sensitive to leg and can even be a bit stressed under saddle, and an 18 year old ex lesson horse that is dull to any leg pressure. I just moved them home and I'm going to try some of these exercises with them!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully they help with your pair!

My mare is 20.. super walk workouts. Thank you!
My horse is only 11, but we are starting our show experience and we need to practice the walk and keeping my horses attention. I am having knee replacement in 2 weeks, so when I start back riding, these exercises will be good for us to practice. My trainer will be riding him for about 2 months and then I will start back. Thank you!

@@AmeliaNewcombDressage , I already am, I think. I am in the middle of a few of your classes! I will listening to them a lot when I am rehabbing!
I have a 16 yr old and a 7 yr old that has only been ridden several times. These will be Good for both of them and for me!
Excelent tips!!! Milion Tks Amelia.
My horse is 17 and I am 23. He’s my best friend and he thinks he’s younger than my 2yo 😅 thank you for all your advice and videos! Love them
This is exactly what I do for like 90% of my lessons. The horse I ride is only 9, but *I* am 37 and had my second back fracture at 34 😅 plus it's been over 100° most days for the last month and a half. You can do SO MUCH at the walk!
My mare is 19 so these walk exercises were very helpful. I really enjoy your training videos. 😊
My horse KWP/Irish Sport Horse is 26yrs and still loves to work
Sunny, the horse I ride, is about 20 or so. Thank you for some ideas on how to work with him. I just started riding again last year after 40 years away from the horse world and I need to up my skills! I’m Sunny’s only rider and limited to riding in one small ring, so we need to keep things fresh.
My sweet mare is 29 and still going strong! she gets a 15-25 minute warm up depending on how much were doing :)
Very nice video. So much to be done at the walk. Very well done.
Track pony - he's a quarter horse gelding he just turned 23 in Apriil, I am the 3rd owner this is my first horse and working on dressage.
That's so great! I'm glad to have you here on a part of your dressage journey.
I commented on one of your videos a while back. I just wanted to say that I finally got a horse. She is a 7 year old Mustang/warmblood
Yay!! Congrats!!
27 years old and killing it! 🔥
I always love your videos! I learn a lot and apply it to my horse who is a jumper!
What a pretty arena!
My horse is in his middle teens so I really appreciate this. The video validated my wanting to exercise gently some days. 🥰
My standardbred is 19 but they raced her at 2 so she had a tough life b4 I got her...she is so sweet I just do very little with her now
Lovely.video...lovely bird songs!!
30 plus and he is still doing a great job - I'm excited that you did this I want to keep him as long as possible and as fit as possible but not work him that anything happens
Wow!! That’s great!!
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage I love watching you ! I'm in TN now Il and I lived in IL saw you were at Lamp light on one of your post would of loved to meet you !
