I have several mics that serve different purposes. My main Mic is my blue yeti for it's plug and play eas of use, a snowball as a back up. For gaming I use a pair of VModa headphones with a book Mic pro chat cable (review on my channel, #VRA)
If I am recording a Voice Over or client work I use a Blue Spark plugged into a Zoom H6. If im doing anything on camera or recording g interviews I have the Shotgun Mic attachment for the H6. Live events I have a Sure SM48.
For run and gun situations and scratch/backup audio I have a ride vidmic go.
But! My favorite by FAR is my set of Zoom H1s. One black and one blue, Batman and Superman respectively. I use these with small table tripods to record Podcasts, Auditions on the run, lectures, my thoughts, basically everything. I think everyone's first audio purchase should be a Zoom H1. It's a great place to start learning and it's form factor makes it more powerful as you start to learn more about audio.

If Rode added another Lightning port to charge at the same time too, that would've blown my mind. Possibly even give it a "daisy chain" - that would be nuts.

2023 : MOVO Duo Lavs are my choice. Transmitters are themselves microphones and have lavs with dead cats that do not pop off when using them. The receiver has a headphone jack too. Both trans and receivers have LED monitor levels and controls for gain. Absolutely no drop outs even when line of site is broken by multiple walls or at a great distance. Combine or separate channels.

Brother, I don't subscribe to much, but I just watched three of your videos and you helped me determine what mics to get. From the Shure MV88, to the Rode Interview Kit (pieces of it), to teaching me about TRRS and TRS I've enjoyed your videos. Looking forward to combining some of these pieces with my PolarPro iPhone 11 LiteChaser Pro Kit, which allows the MV88 to be plugged in without taking off the case!

I'm going to a conference in a month where I'll be shooting for my YT channel and I'm sure it will be loud in the conference hall. I have the Rode Wireless Go... that I plan to use for stand-ups and maybe use it as a handheld mic for interviews in the booths. Any affordable suggestions? I would love to be able to do something small, lightweight and easy. I'd love a handheld wireless stick mic, but I can't afford them.

To answer your question regarding mic options for smartphones. 1. iRig Mic plugs into iPhone. You CAN pass a handheld back and forth for interviews. News reporters do it all the time. Actually, adds credibility and looks very professional. 2. Plug Rode Smart Lav+ with adapter into a Zoom H1 or other audio recorder. Don't need to worry about long cord. Sync audio in post. 3. I LOVE the Saramonic SmartRig+. Flexible solution for numerous mic options including XLR connection, preamps, etc. TRRS into iPhone/lightning adapter.

I use my iPhone to broadcast LIVE on FB Live with the PowerDeWise mic, but looking for a better mic to record when I play the piano live. For interviews, I use OBS software because many of the people I interview are out of state, so that is the best option for me. I use a Yeti mic when I am interviewing via OBS. The people that I interview are using Skype sometimes that can get sketchy sounding but with the software, I can pretty much monitor them and they sound really great when I edit the replay.

Sean, why haven't you made a video about counterfeit equipment and how important it is to buy from authorized dealers of Rode and canon products etc.? This is a huge deal and you help sell tons of electronic products online and many are fake. Please make this video! I would like to start making videos again and need new equipment. I almost got taken a few weeks ago and decided to check on fakes. Low and behold, it was and I took the right steps to get a refund. There are not enough videos out there about this topic and you influence so many people that it should be part of your brand. Thank you for the motivation and quality videos that you impart on the rest of us. I have learned so much and will be making major changes and starting a new channel too! Thanks!

Great video indeed ! I've still got a question for you : I know it's not a problem for you, since it's obviously used for interviews (talking voice). But now try singing a long note into your mic. I'm wondering if you also get this clicking and annoying sound (like a metronome set on 45 bpm). I'm a musician and have to use this kind of setup (jack to lightning) to record my live concerts through my phone. I can't get rid of this annoying click..I guess it's due to the lightning port technology..any ideas? it happens with everything I tried (2 different iPhones, iPad, apple dongles, apple headphones w/ the mic, ...). Thank you !

Good reviews, here's what I don't like, it's only for Apple devices. My love for Apple devices is mild at best. I don't use an apple phone, I have a Mac Mini from 2012 because it's the last good one they've made. At the rate apple changes their design and ports, I wouldn't want to invest into any proprietary system for Apple devices.
I'll stick with my Zoom H6. It's a huge investment, but I also don't have to worry about another device for it to be able to function. I just need batteries. For a cheaper solution I would almost suggest looking I to a splitter to plug 2 lavs into a Zoom H1. That way you just need the appropriate Mini jack cable to plug into your preferred device, or just record into the H1.

Sean love your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Have you used the RODE Wireless Go? I’m trying to figure out if you can record using two wireless Go units with the iPhone. I’ve seen a video that suggests hooking them into the SC6. But I’ve seen a DSLR video that shows ow to use a TRS to Duel TSF stereo breakout cable, then to two SC7 cables to the Go. Do you know if the splitter (breakout cable) would work? Thanks.

Hi, I am impressed with the sound quality of the Rode SC6-L vs Rode smartlav+. I feel this is so similar to Blue Yeti.
When only one recording for the podcast, do I have to wear both or wear one? Thank you for your help in advance!

Using the SC6 you can use one, just make sure it goes to both or else you'll have to double the mono signal or else one channel will be muted for people lsitening in stereo.
