- For Spanish learners, deciding when to use the imperfect vs. preterite past tenses can be confusing. It's often made more confusing by efforts to memorize dozens of situations and conjugations.
In my experience, it's a lot more effective (and interesting) to learn through context as you go. So in this video, you'll get an introduction to the concept of Preterite vs Imperfect - enough grammar to get you started. Then through lots of exposure to Spanish, you'll start building an intuition for when to use each tense.

Hi, I just discovered your channel & it looks great! Do you have a video on your background of your own Spanish learning journey (if there is one, & you're not a native speaker, a la Super Holly)?
Thanks Lyssa! I don’t have one yet, that would be a good idea though. The short story is I’m a native English speaker who learned in school, on my own, and spending lots of time in South America, mainly Chile. I’ve since learned some other languages, and have learned how to learn a more effectively, which shapes a big part of what I try to share here. Thanks again for your comment, I’ll make a video on this one day soon
Gracias.
Hello
@@Artemov78 gracias! buenas sugerencias. También se podría decir "no pudimos caminar en la nieve", para decir "we couldn't walk *in* the snow". Pero si quieres decir "We couldn't walk *because of* the snow", tu sugerencia (no pudimos caminar *por* la nieve, o debido a la nieve) sería mejor
hi im a complete beginner what should i do im lost plaese guide me to something there is a ton of videos on youtube but im confused please elaborate
I strongly recommend "Language Transfer" if you are an absolute beginner. It's free, and it's an amazing introduction to the language
I’ve had to learn this concept so many times and still confuse it🥲
