This was a great tutorial as far as the grouping zones organization. However, you only went through one type of W-Wing. The other type of W-Wing is where the matching pairs lie in different chutes, and there are only two possible cells for the candidate elimination. I would love to see if you could organize the other type of W-Wing in the zones like you did here, and showcase that one also. Edit: I see someone else has already brought this to your attention. Yes I can Hi Fernando. The w wing does not happen very often. Thanks for your suggestion. My tutorials are booked up for a quite a while now but I will put the w wing on the list. Hang in there You can do it.
On the last puzzle, if you execute a W wing on the 1/3 pairs in boxes 4 and 7, R4C3 becomes a 5. If, however, you execute the W wing on the 5/8 pairs in boxes 4 and 6, R4C3 becomes a 3. Since R4C3 cannot be both a 3 and a 5, I feel that there must be a more specific rule for identifying a proper W wing than this video went into.
Interesting however both the 5 and 8 can go into the green zone. It is only a W wing when one of those numbers cannot go into the green zone. Hope this helps.

First exmples: In top example, I would just use the bent triple r1c2, r1c5 and r2c1 to eliminate 5 from r3c6. In the bottom, I would start with only 2 in R9.

Can you also use an xyz wing? X being r2c6, y being r3c6, z being r2c1, to deduce r1c5 is a 2? With then makes r1c2 a 9, r3c1 a 5, and so on solving the puzzle?
i got that. bt i'm confused. i'll talk about the 1st example. there was a pair (2,5) in the position (row=1, column=5) or at the middle of 6 and 1 in the 2nd block. so in that position we have to put 2 or 5. now if we look down along the column there was a 5. so we can easily drop out 5 from the pair (2,5). then it becomes 2. another way we can also get the 2. that is, there was a matching pair (2,5) in the 1st and 2nd block.[ note: i really don't understand that why they are a matching pair. because i knew that the position of a matching pair can be in a row or a column or a block and if one of them is a certain number then the other will be distinct and corresponding number with respect to the pair. in these case (2,5) doesn’t not satisfy the rules]. and then and you showed that if one is 2 then another will be 2. but if one is 5 then it doesn't fit. so 5 can't be the answer. thus the answer is only 2. and the rest calculation is easy. so why do i use w-wing ?
hey ,,, Great Sudoku Guy ,,, I was reading all the comments and there is something I cannot find clearly , maybe is some restriction in the definition of W-wing Example 1 . Why isn't possible use MP 59 ? Ekample 2. Why isn't possible to use MP 47 ( blocks 1 and 2 ) and also MP 47 (blocks 2 and 3 ) Example 3 wht dont't use MP 69 Example 4 : why don't use MP89 ? Thanks a lot

After reading all of the 3 years of comments, it appears I am the only one who wonders how the W-Wing got its name (or maybe the only one who cares?). I don't notice any visual clue in the puzzles you demonstrated. Also I searched several other sudoku sites to find out, but it isn't addressed anywhere I've looked. Is it an arbitrary letter assignment?
this might be a silly question but why not just change the matching pairs to the number that has the number in the green zone? in the example above 58, 58 matching pairs and there is an 8 in the green zone so why not make the matching pairs 8's? thank you for your awesome videos!
How do you determine which matching pair to use? At 25:44 there is also a 1 and 7 pair that looks like it could apply to the W-wing. If it doesn't could you explain why it doesn't?
As with most "Rules" this one is a combination of other "Rules" of Elimination by CoIncidence of Pairs. But the "Rule" is much more difficult to describe than it is to use. I can never remember the description or even what they are called.
@11:00 "Why can't this be an 8?" -- Truer words never spoken. Just because it didn't work out when you tried it one time, doesn't mean it won't work out the next time (just happened not to work that time).

Hello Robin! For fun i am programming in C++ a sudoku solver containing all sudoku algorithms. I just starting to implement the W-Wing. I use your sample (started on 25:59 min) to test my program but my program find some small numbers that your sample is missing: 1 in R7C2, 3 in R7C6, 7 in R5C2 and R6C2, 8 in R6C1and R6C2 and R8C4 and R8C5 and R8C6. Can you clarify why those numbers are missing?

13:43 You say that you dont use the 6,9 matchibg pairs because there is no 9 in the green area, but as I can see there is a 9 there (C8R9). What am I missing?
@@SudokuGuy Oh I see now. I think you wanted to say red area in the video because if you start to use 69 as a w wing, you cant find any 6 in the red area so there is nothing there to eliminate. Right?
I understand everything you explained, but I wanted to ask if the matching pairs have to be next to each other in a column horizontally or vertically or can there be one whole row of space between them? because I saw in some examples on the Internet that it can, so now it is not clear to me. For example, like in your example, when you explained vertical, so you took 4/8, can we take 6/9 where there is a whole row of space between those matching pairs that match or have to be next to each other (but in different blocks )?
Like to watch your series. I noticed in Tutorial #64 that when you show all the alternatives before doing the W wing you did not have an 8 in each of the bottom cells on the left side of the middle block or a 1 in the top of the bottom block in the middle top cell or a 3 in the top of the bottom middle block on the right side. If the 8"s were in then you do not have the the matching pairs that you selected so how can the puzzle progress?

god question. I did not cover the green zone being in the middle, however the principal still works. Using the big 9 is safer as we can't tell in the green zone whether there will be a big 5. due to 2,5,7 The blue zone is in 2 spots row 1 c4,5,6 and row 3 c 8,3,5/7., therefore the red zone is in row 1 bl1c 1,2 3 and row 3 bl 3.c 7,8,9, this means the 9 can be removed in block 1 c2 and block 3 cell 8.Using TMB and ram it is can be solved. such as you get a W wing. thanks for your question. I will add this to my description.
@@SudokuGuychoosing MP 59 ,,,,,, as you said , you remove 9 in block 1 c2 and block 3 cell 8 . Using TMB then you arrived with two 5's in block 1 cell 4 and in block 3 cell 4 that's not possible. ?????

I love your video tutorials, but on the W-wing, I think it's a little complicated an explanation to make color zones. I found the explanation at ua-cam.com/video/jn0ZUQlVliw/v-deo.html very easy to understand. I guess I'm addicted to the KISS principle. 😊😊
Sir i like you too much you are too cute! Hello from Turkey I didn’t use to solve sudoku but after you I started to solve but there are 2 hard levels that I couldn’t see xy or xyz wing. I don’t know swordfish yet so I sent you 2 pictures from instagram can you please reply it if you are still active in Instagram? Or how can I send the pictures if you are not busy (Edit: I mean I need your help sir can you please help me:) )
I don't understand why you decided to remove the two twos at the start. You could have just as easily removed the five and the nine from those two cells, and have gotten a different - yet still possible - solution. Also, I don't understand how you got your small numbers in the first place. You say 5 can't go in r3c8 in the first place. But what precludes it? There's no other 5 in row 3 or in square 3 excluding a 5 there. There isn't a cleaver pattern forcing the 5 up, there isn't a naked pair in the row or a matching pair in the square forcing it out, and we know there isn't a 5 in column 8, because you've put a small 5 in r1c8. So it makes no sense to me - how could you eliminate a 5 from that cell? Again, in the second example, I still don't follow the logic - you want to make one part of the pair an 8 because that would make the other an 8 also. But what you want and what you get aren't the same thing. You can just as easily not make one or the other an 8, and since you can do both, it means you have no proof to do either. Also, an 8 in cell r8c8 does not exclude an 8 from cell r9c2. It excludes an 8 from r9c8, which pushes the 8 in row 9 to square 7, meaning either cell r9c1 or r9c2. And nothing to indicate which one of the two get the 8. Essentially, you've explained what this W-Wing thing does, but never explained why. You say you've tried putting an 8 inn the other cell (r9c1) and then tried to complete the puzzle and it didn't work - well, great, that's bifurcation for you! But you're not doing bifurcation, you're teaching logic. So kindly please explain it.

Hey Great Sudoku Guy ,,, please could you give another tutorial of this W-wing? when I tried to use in the puzzles I couldn't Thanks
@@SudokuGuy It does, thanks

I think I understand you however the 2/5 matching pair is the key for solving a W wing.
hey ,,, Great Sudoku Guy ,,, I was reading all the comments and there is something I cannot find clearly , maybe is some restriction in the definition of W-wing
Example 1 . Why isn't possible use MP 59 ?
Ekample 2. Why isn't possible to use MP 47 ( blocks 1 and 2 ) and also MP 47 (blocks 2 and 3 )
Example 3 wht dont't use MP 69
Example 4 : why don't use MP89 ?
Thanks a lot
The 59 could work , the 47 are in the same row...won't work etc the 69 and 89 try them and see what happens If they work great!
@@SudokuGuy I tried in the first example with MP 59 and gave another solution ... Please could you clarify ? thanks Genius !!

25:05 if I chose matching pair 78 of top right hand side block and mid RHS block
I think so.
this might be a silly question but why not just change the matching pairs to the number that has the number in the green zone? in the example above 58, 58 matching pairs and there is an 8 in the green zone so why not make the matching pairs 8's? thank you for your awesome videos!
By all means you could do that. Because both numbers are in the green zone it is not a legitimate W wing.
How do you determine which matching pair to use? At 25:44 there is also a 1 and 7 pair that looks like it could apply to the W-wing. If it doesn't could you explain why it doesn't?
Yes you are right. congratulations. Tell me if the puzzles works out as I am travelling do not have the ability to do the complete puzzle.
It is a fantastic idea uncle but the orange zone was not visible. Pls try with another colour uncle. Thanks for your help
Ok next time
As with most "Rules" this one is a combination of other "Rules" of Elimination by CoIncidence of Pairs. But the "Rule" is much more difficult to describe than it is to use. I can never remember the description or even what they are called.
Thank you for your comment. I suggest you write the rules down somewhere. You are right....once you hae done a feww the rules are simple.
@11:00 "Why can't this be an 8?" -- Truer words never spoken. Just because it didn't work out when you tried it one time, doesn't mean it won't work out the next time (just happened not to work that time).
Thanks for your comment. hang in there. Nothing like practice to help you improve.

Wonderful Sir. Take care,
From India.
Same to you. 😄❤😀
13:43 You say that you dont use the 6,9 matchibg pairs because there is no 9 in the green area, but as I can see there is a 9 there (C8R9). What am I missing?
Thank you for pointing this out. My mistake I meant to say there is no 6 in the green area., which would qualify it to be used as an W wing too.
@@SudokuGuy Thanks for the helpful response. Just to make it clear... You could use it (69 matching pair) as an W wing with that 9, right?
@@SudokuGuy Oh I see now. I think you wanted to say red area in the video because if you start to use 69 as a w wing, you cant find any 6 in the red area so there is nothing there to eliminate. Right?
@@Sakraf654 I do think that's what he meant, yeah!
Interesting. sorry i do not know which part of the tutorials you are referring to The min/sec would help
Thanks Mr.Robin. if we don't find one of number of matching pairs in 3rd block what we do??
Which video are you referring to please.

Hello sudokuguy!
I think there something wrong... See time 11:34 you type 4 but on the same line up there is 4 🤔.
Thx a lot for your video 🙏
10:01 you type 2 but on the same line up there is 2 😉
There is already a 9 in that block so it is removed leaving the 4 Re the 2 the section at the bottom has no relationship with the top section. Now a days I've started solving Samurai Sudoku.
Great. It is still good for the brain.
In the first example if we take 59 as the matching pair it does not work ,why?
god question.

Thanks for your thoughts. I looked at your video and congratulations for explaining it

Hi sir how are you
All good
Sir i like you too much you are too cute! Or how can I send the pictures if you are not busy (Edit: I mean I need your help sir can you please help me:) )
So nice of you I'l try to help.
Thank you for your comment. Much is related to TMB or LCR.
