The only controversial political opinion JP has is that he doesn't believe in compelled speech regarding peoples pronouns. He has stated he would be happy to use preferred pronouns if personally requested but to be compelled legally to use certain words is abhorrent to him as it is to me.

He sees 'feminism' as a movement to be despised because of the ludicrous examples the media trawls up and highlights. It's like saying Christianity is represented by the KKK!

It's easy to feel that way if you heavily consume media, mainstream and social both. We are constantly told by people with agendas how terrible things are here and that is why we should vote for the 'other party', or how we invented slavery, or are the cause of all the world's ills, espoused by people only partially furnished with knowledge of history - just enough to form an opinion, but not enough to avoid being woefully misinformed. The fact is we have our problems, like Every. Other. Country. On. Earth. But despite that it is still one of the best places to live and work, and by and large we have a history to be proud of, despite the occasional mis-step. The people who denigrate the UK often do so using freedoms historically established and fought for by the British on their behalf, using technologies invented or only made possible by other inventions of the British. If anyone tells you different, know they are wrong, keep calm, and carry on.

@@kevinmaclennan2319 Melanie Shaw was locked in solitary confinement with a media ban five years ago. Melanie's crime was taking to the streets with a megaphone and giving out names of politicians, clergy, barristers who are paedophiles in power, even the ex prime ministers like Teresa may who is the one who had Melanie locked up. Melanie had her hand slammed in a cell door cutting off two fingers and was force fed psychotic drugs to make her unfit for trial. Melanie's government appointed barrister is a convicted criminal and was sentenced to three years in prison for fraud, he was not given prison and was given a one point five million fine instead. Then given Melanie to murder in prison by being made her barrister at the request of May. Melanie might be murdered in prison by now, no one other than myself will even speak out for Melanie. My reason for hating England and the quietness of English people over Melanie Shaw is very justified. England is nothing like the country it used to be and people are weak and afraid of parliament. May's dad was called hubert brasier, hubert was in charge of the biggest paedophile priest ring in the history of the English church. He was the head of the diocese of the south coast of England. He committed sui, cide by driving head on into an oncoming range rover on a duel carriageway. Teresa May hero worships her paedophile father, still to this very day. She is either still having Melanie Shaw abused in prison or May has had Melanie Shaw murdered. There are streets and buildings named after Cyril Smith a raging child rapist who was best friends with ted heath and this was why cyril was never arrested even after being caught coming out of children's homes with pornography in his boot. What do English, British people do when i mention these facts, bury their heads, parliament has been raping and murdering children in government run care homes since the nineteen sixties. My reasons for hating this scumbag country which is not really free at all are all of my own making and choosing. Because i am British i fight for the underdogs and this country is seriously lacking bollocks.

Your Founding Fathers, well the British ones at least, used to sit in our Houses of Parliament and Institutions to take notes to help them frame and prepare the American Constitution I believe. The Freedoms you have were the freedoms we had established in our own country. Your Governmental and Law structures and procedures were also based on ours too. I am not sure, but I think you also used our Common Law. Of course you have now had Independence from us for 264 years so you have, quite rightly, gone your own way, but the fundamental rights and freedoms we have are also yours. Our two nations are not called 'Cousins' without good reason.
One amusing story. We have a statue of George Washington over here, sent to us by your Country. George Washington was born in England, but once famously said that he never wanted to stand on English soil again. So when we received the statue, before we put it up, we sent to his home State for enough American soil so, when he was standing, gazing eternally over London we made sure he didn't break his vow.

@@black4pienus No, the US declaration of independence is carbon copy of the Dutch one of 1581 except it is far more concise. The Dutch Republic had no proper constitution but the Union of Utrecht from 1579 was the de facto one, it had the freedom of conscience (for how to believe in god) codified and therefore religious tolerance.
The founding fathers studied the Dutch Republic extensively but were only partially impressed. And rightly so, it was all made up on the go, improvised, while revolt against the Spanish king was turning into the 80-years war. There was also this semi-heriditary position of the stadtholder as a product of those times, the position of a noble family among rich commoners in power. A quite unique position for one family stemming from that revolt only, so not very useful as an example at all.

Our King, George IV, travelled up to Scotland and appeared in front of the Scottish people in a tartan kilt - hence the Union Jack Flag was born. I believe England and Scotland have always been tribal countries, and because of that we bicker, but Scotland has stood beside us through thick and thin. Whatever our problems, the Scottish people are always there when we are in peril. God bless the Scots! I say. In fact the same could be said of all countries making up the UK now I think of it.

Thank you Neal for your on point summaries and thoughtful comments. I am proud and immeasurably grateful to the country of my birth. Although it has become fashionable to knock Great Britain for the days of our Empire the truth is that we introduced into many countries our systems of law and justice, administration and frameworks of governance. We also introduced and built railways, telegraph and postal systems, constructed roads and other key infrastructure around the globe. And we also worked hard and at great cost, both in blood shed and money spent to bring about the abolition of slavery in the world. Were we perfect? Of course not, but we did much good. And furthermore the huge number of British inventions over the centuries underpin much of the way that the modern world works to this day. Rule Britannia 🇬🇧 indeed, as you said yourself Mr Peterson.

People don't on the whole understand that the British Empire was built on Britain's need to trade and have resources for its industries. They believed in free trade, Adam Smith, the reasons they developed Armies was to protect that trade not to conquer the world. They believed in the Protestant work ethic and Capitalism. Yes they did develop a pompous sense of superiority. But give them some credit. They laid the foundations of the USA, and other English speaking countries who are successful.

You must recall that the Americans who thought of freedom were firstly British, & the principles on which they founded their new country were based on long held British ideas, which generations of Britons had fought for, against Kings & tyrants, & foreign enemies.
A British person is proud of their independent spirit, which is allied to a strong sense of community, each being their own person, not easily led, but skeptical of authority, while being respectful of those whole fulfil their proper role in society. We Brits, however, have not become as self obsessed with extreme individualism as people in the US seem to be. The benefits of our society come with the duties & responsibilities to help it to continue.

I am British to the core - born and bred in SE London then Mid Wales. I have been fortunate enough to have been married to two European ladies (not simultaneously I hasten to clarify) an Austrian and Dane. Both fine women from fine countries. I learned both German and Danish to a high standard, (as well as Welsh under protest). Now I reside in Asia and have a native partner of four years. I haven't tried to learn the local language because I find the government's leadership, policies and actions to be despicable and so I remain uninvested in the place - forever vowing to exit the next occasion I feel personal affront from the government. Of course its easier said than done, so.....When the incomparable Jordan Peterson speaks so fondly and effusive about the UK it cheers me - but equally it saddens me to be so far from it, both in terms of distance and of existence. In the UK we are inclined to undervalue our country and bemoan every smallest detail that doesn't suit us perfectly. To the insular, blinkered and the simply uninformed individuals who routinely engage in bashing the UK , its institutions and customs I say: go visit 90% of Africa, 75% of Asia, 50% of mainland Europe, 90% of Central and South America and EXPERIENCE the complete absence of all the protections freedoms and privileges you enjoy back home in blithe ignorance. I guarantee your view of the UK would do a 180° turn without prompting.

As is so often the case, it takes a well educated person from one of the former colonies to highlight the massive gift the Isles of the British gave to the world. It wasn't an overnight achievement, it took centuries, one small step at a time to wrest the power and give the freedoms most of the western world enjoys.
President Obama said in his speech to the great hall in Westminster, a hall that dates to almost the time of Magna Carta, 800 years, that the greatest example of English freedom was the American declaration of independence. He also made a cool joke about the previous three speakers being Her majesty the Queen, nelson Mandela and the Pope. He said that was either the start of a very funny joke or a very high bar. Another example of the freedoms we are talking about. Imagine making a joke in a Muslim run country that included their head of state, or in N. Korea about their divine leader..think about it.

Socialism and Communism? Like they are the same thing? Americans generally think this and gave no clue about socialist values - some of which are present in every western society. If you think socialism means no freedom of speech, you seriously need to go educate yourself. Communism is an ideal that hasn't practically worked but was intended to be for the good of all, not just the few. Although this philosophy, corrupted, has led to states without freedoms, including a populace without a vote, ideologically it came from a morally better place and intention than any fascist regime, which does exactly the same thing but entirely intends dictatorship and never has any aim of being for the good of all. The amount of Americans who see Communism as the darkest evil, way more so than fascism; who believe their country champions democracy when 1. the US voting system is far from truly democratic itself and 2. it has repeatedly aided brutally non democratic dictatorships for its own ends, is ethically infuriating. The amount of Americans who think Socialism is the same as Communism is mind blowingly ignorant, illustrating its shockingly poor standard of education - way at the bottom if the world's wealthiest nations as it is. But the number who believe both if the above AND claim to be Christian is positively criminal as well as morally bankrupt. JC was most definitely a socialist, and arguably espoused communism in its purest, ideological form.
I say this as a citizen of both countries just fyi. Please Americans, you need to do some serious homework and catch-up reading on political systems, including your own very flawed one, before you make statements like this. Eugh. 🤨

This only happened after the Dutch revolt and the signing of the "peace of Munster treaty" and the "peace of Westphalia treaty" in 1648 that ended both the 80-years war and the 30-years war!
During the revolt many people fled Europe via ths Netherlands to the New Land where they weren't under Spanish rule and already implemented that democracy ahead of the signings!
Technically modern democracy arrived first in the US (1624) and in The Netherlands itself only officially as of October 1648 after the signing of the "Peace of Westphalia treaty)!
During the second Anglo-Dutch war in 1664 (Where not a single shot was fired because we were ridiculously outgunned as the Dutch government refused to send back up) we traded New Amsterdam (Renamed to New York by the british, after the Duke of York) with the British for Suriname, part of Saint Martin and the Isle of Run in Indonesia to secure our cotton, coffee and spice trades, part of that deal with the British was also not to change that existing democracy and not expell any of the existing settlers which they honored! 🙏
As a big thank you we detroyed two of their biggest battleships and hijacked their flagship "The Royal Charles" from under their noses in the Raid of Medway, June 1667 (probably the most embarrassing thing ever happened to the British Royal Marines)!
We called it even but they were pissed after this and the heavy loss in the longest navy battle in recorded history (4-days war, 1966) still had 4 more wars with our British friends, 3rd (1672/1674) and 4th (1780;1784) Anglo-Dutch wars and 2 Boers wars (1899 and 1902) in South Africa!
