@@jdm1066Among Mexicans, they're regarded as gods to this day because of the Oedipal Section of The End.
When The Doors played in Mexico City in 1970, they were struck by the reaction to this. When the Oedipal Section approached, all the men in the room shushed each other so insistantly that they sounded like a room full of snakes. When Morrison said "Father? Yes, son?", all the men yelled "I WANT TO KEEEEEL YOU!!!!" The first time that happened, Jim jumped back a step. "Mother?" "I JUAN TO FAHHHHHCK YOU!!!!"
When I went to my pal Katrina's birthday party in Feb 05, the place was full of her & her husband's friends & family, & several friends from the South Side Punk Scene. Almost all were Mexican. They had karaoke, so my pals said I should sing something. Normally, I'd've been too terrified (this being in my Dude Past Life, testosterone brain damage, etc.), but I was nicely toasted & among friends, so I sang Back Door Man, in my Navy Pea Coat & everything. It took me 20 minutes to get back to my table, cos all the hot Mexican kittens grabbed my coat as I went by to say how great that was. Everyone there knew The Doors well. My Punk Rock pal was stunned by the reaction that got, so I explained it. He said, "1970? All these years later, you sing that & they went nuts?" I was kinda surprised, too, actually.

I saw this as it first aired on The Smothers Brothers Show in ‘68.
“Touch Me” was quite a departure for The Doors compared to their other songs; it was a lot more pop/commercial in its sound and style than other songs from the band.
And, because of its shorter length, it received heavy rotation on AM radio, which was still pop music centered in those days, but which also tended to only play songs of three minutes or under.
I think a part of Morrison liked being a “crooner” vocally; when The Doors were recording their first album in ‘66 at Sunset Sound in LA, Jim was pleased to find that he would be singing into a Telefunken U47 mic, and knowing that Frank Sinatra always used a U47, it made him happy, as he was a fan of Sinatra.
With this song, he was able to sing the “I’m gonna love ya” sections in a crooning style, and the contrast between this and the more rock vocal style he sang on the other sections worked well for the song.
The music was pre-recorded for this show, (as was common in those days for TV, though the band may have also been playing live here, but very softly, just to support the recorded backing track)...but Jim’s vocals were all live, as can obviously be seen and heard when he makes a mistake and misses the vocal cue in the middle, not singing the four “C’mon’s”...and when he realizes there’s only silence where he should be singing, he comes in with a hurried and strong “Touch me babe” on the downbeat.
I don’t think Jim Morrison was the best rock lead vocalist ever, his range was limited, and there were times he was more than just a little pitchy...
BUT... BUT...he absolutely had his own style happening, his own unique vibe, and it absolutely worked for what The Doors did.
While rock vocals would eventually become generic, and some bands could have swapped their lead singer with another band’s lead singer without much difference, there’s no possible way that could have ever happened with Morrison and The Doors, because no one else could have ever even come close to being “Jim”.
    🙏

The Doors featuring the greatest keyboardist in rock history, Ray Manzarek...Jim Morrison had a great voice, and was an absolutely brilliant man, 150 IQ or so. Robby Krieger wrote this song along with The Doors biggest song, Light My Fire....and he was a great guitarist also.....in the short time there were with us The Doors established that they were absolutely GREAT !!!

The Doors were never one of my favorite bands, but massive respect for what they did. Totally different, no bass and that voice. Morrison was twenty something, but that voice of his was timeless, like it had been around for centuries. And let's not dismiss Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore. Really it was the whole package that made the Doors so impactful.

Thanks for this! What's most impressive is that the vocals only are live. In those days, the music was all sync'd to the original recording but the vocalist (Jim in this case) is totally live. This from a guy with absolutely no vocal training, just love of great lyrics (these written by Robbie) sung with feeling and sincerity, and a huge Sinatra and Elvis fan (whose influences you of course can hear - as you so rightly stated). My all time favorite band!

Actually he was much more of a drinker (an alcoholic actually). Did LSD, reefer early on but went way more to alcohol by this time. However in this TV appearance pretty sure he's totally sober (hence the excellent performance). Don't get your info from the faulty Stone film - read. There are plenty of good books about him out there.

Who wasn't in the 60's? I think for Jim relax meant to completely passed out, done and gone lol. Meanwhile, he was a "natural" chaotic, dark and poetic performer on stage. The last thing he wanted was to be "relax' on stage. lol So, I don't think he used drugs to feel "relax".

Yeah, unfortunately he was known as a garbage head. But I'd bet, alcohol was his drug of choice - same with Janis ... and Grace Slick (who made it out of the 60's, 70's, and 80's alive. She's still alive, clean, and sober - never took the smack though).

Jim Morrison....Crawling King Snake.... I have the albums, from their original The Doors, to L.A Woman. Listened to them. Had a kick for Psychodelic Rock, throwing in some blues, when i was in elementary school. the first song that ive heard from them is The Crystal Ship. Very soft, yet so warm. It immediately starts you off with a beginning touch of Jims Vocals. Literally. This song seems to have a catchy tone, then it brings into Jim with his vocals. Pretty cool. RIP Jim Morrison
