      So, this is drawn as a contiguous contour and then offsets are used in the allowance option. So if they left 1mm it's going to start huge. Not all shops have cam software to create ideal tool paths.

    • @jaidenbrink
      @jaidenbrink Рік тому

      @@jeepmanxj i was thinking that it was programmed to allow for multiple stock sizes, but uses the same pattern to create the same end product, possibly also in different sizes. That way all they have to do is change one parameter depending on stock size, instead of multiple.
      Keep in mind i have zero machining experience. So I’m simply going on what i do know.

    • @jeepmanxj
      @jeepmanxj Рік тому +1

      @@jaidenbrink that could be as well. This could be a feature of a larger part they modified for the video.
      Most people here bitching about tool paths are part catchers. They stand in front of a machine and catch everything that comes out. Someone else tells them how to set the machine up, what tools to use, how long the tools need to stick out, what material size to use and so on.
      My guess is this is programmed at the machine. It doesn't have all of the fancy tool paths optimization you get with cam software so sometimes you wind up with things like this, especially when hard turning.
      I am a tool maker and I spend most of my day making fine blanking punches and form tools. We cut the form tools with cbn and use a similar process. Even on cam we get bizarre shit like this because we don't have the perfect blockform for the old tools profile many times. Or the part is broken so we use a generic square/round blank.
      When they are programmed at the machine instead of taking 5 hours to program a 45 minute part to save 10 minutes we just cut air so we don't have to write thousands of lines of code.

    Sometimes it's just easier to go with the program that works, not the program that's efficient. I program an old 6T Fanuc lathe - I'm still so new I'm wet behind the ears still. I could spend 12 hours doing one off's until I'm totally satisfied with a program, but then I've wasted 6 hours... When I could have just gotten the parts done.
