1:30 - bit late of a reply, but the fwd panel you're pointing to is a SELCAL panel. In areas with no VHF radio coverage, only HF, such as over the Atlantic or Pacific, it can get quite fatiguing to sit there and listen to the radio the entire time, because HF is much less clear than VHF; without this system you'd end up listening to static for hours straining to hear any voices. With SELCAL, ATC can "ping" a code that is assigned to you, and it will cause a ding in the flight deck and a light to illuminate, letting the pilot know to bring the volume up on HF and ask ATC what they want. In the Felis, this panel is located on the overhead. The aft panel looks like weather radar controls. The buttons along the top are the mode selectors, and below are reception gain and tilt controls, among other things.
Thanks for this fascinating video. I was a Pan Am avionics tech at LAX, and worked on these 747-200s often. This sure brings back good memories. Wishing you good luck on your project.
Wow, that's so amazing - you must have some amazing stories to tell for sure! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed my video, there'll be plenty more to come in the future. Thank you very much indeed!
Completely ignore the discouraging comments. Yes it will be a big job but definitely doable and more doable now than it would have been 10 or 15 years ago. Having personally been involved in two successful fixed base cockpit sim projects(B732/B744) I can say for certain can be done if you have the time and commitment.
Thank you for the kind comments, it means a lot, especially considering I've had a few nasty comments both privately and on the comments section. That sounds fantastic, both a 737-200 and a 747-400! You must certainly know your stuff for sure. Please drop me an e-mail if you have any knowledge to share!
@Boeing-Project Defo interested in helping. I sent an email to the fighterjetsim email. Is that still the right one? Check your spam if you don't see it.
It's your cockpit and as long as you're having fun who cares what some people think. None of us start out as experts, there aren't many shortcuts in life, and the best way to learn is to do. I'm building a flat-screen trainer type 742 cockpit, and that's proved a challenge even with just touchscreens and software, so I have real admiration for what you're doing. Just look at how your subscriber count has grown - there are a lot of people out there interested in the project and willing you on. That Captain panel looks the business now, well done.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, I am by no means an expert in this type of thing, but will get there slowly. Wow, your little project sounds great - please keep me updated. A good few years ago, I was flying the CLS 747-200/300 on FSX. I decided to replicate the captains side of the cockpit using certain types of wood, and sim parts. I was actually really happy with it, and it looked quite good if I say so. However, I scrapped that project for a 747-400, and then scrapped the -400 for this real 747-200. Your words are really kind, thank you so much. I'm so glad people are enjoying what I'm doing, and yes - captains panel looks incredible 😃
Getting this together quicker than I expected! You will always get naysayers. These are mostly people that have failed in life and are jealous that someone else is out there, living it and doing things. Ignore them, concentrate of positive and constructive feedback. Don't even engage with the trolls, that is what they want.
Indeed we are. I am very very determined to get this moving forward at a fairly rapid pace. I am really happy with how nicely its all coming together. Things will obviously slow down a bit over Christmas, but in January, I'll be back, getting this cockpit complete on the inside. Once done - we'll get her indoors and begin the most difficult process.... "conversion". Thank so much for watching, means so much to our team!
@@mastermachetier5594 Thank you for your comment. No, sadly this will never fly again. I own jus the cockpit section of this aircraft which was removed when she was scrapped in 2022. The aim is to turn this into one of the only Boeing 747-200 simulators in the world. Take a look at a few videos before and you will see the cockpit being removed from the aircraft. Thanks for watching 😃
Ahh, so good to see some of the old Queens are saved and converted into a sim!! I built a B744 sim with genuine parts and some FDS components. But without a shell as you have, as I built it in my flat. Me too had a long break btw. certain building steps. So, keep up focussed and all the best for you and your project! 😎
Hello there, I remember I think I spoke to you some years ago on your website. I'm a big fan of your work! I was building a 747-400 using FDS parts and a homemade wooden shell. I however gave up that project when I was offered the flight deck of this 747-200 here. Thank you so much - I shall certainly be working very hard on this. Would be very interested to speak with you regarding how you converted your real throttle quadrant!
Hey there ! First of all I love this project, I can’t wait to see it up and running one day ! Secondly, the 2 pedestal pannels are from top to bottom, SelCal for ATC selective calling on vhf/hf. The bottom one is for the weather radar I believe. Hope that helps ! One again great stuff 😁🤩
Thank you very much for your kind words. Perfect, I'm glad you could confirm that for me. The layout of this cockpit is very different in some ways to the Felis 742, which we will be using to power the cockpit. On these earlier 747s, there was no cruise autothrottle either, the speed was controlled by the engineer the whole way. That's certainly the case on mine due to no autothrottle control panel which would go in the pedestal of course 😃
@Boeing-Project Indeed ! May I suggest perhaps at a later date contacting PanAm academy in Florida. It is the last training centre in the world where you can still get a real pilot and FE type rating on 747-200. They may be able to help in a more official manner 😁. In any case I wish you good luck with your wonderful project and hope to see more of your content… Merry Christmas in advance and happy holidays !!! 🛫🛩️
@@joachimkerriou9209 I would love to contact the PanAm academy. I've known about it for a good few years now. I would absolutely love to get a type rating on the 747 classic...... but I am just a general avaition pilot in real life, and don't hold an ATPL 🙁 Will definitely try contacting them in the new year though. Even to visit their facility would be cool, but we shall see. Thank you so much, and a very Merry Christmas to you too! 😃
This is a fantastic project! I stumbled across your site this morning and have watched all the videos and have subscribed. Looking forward to following your future progress. Just an idea, how about a video on the history of this particular aircraft? I would love to learn about this aircraft's history as well as how you managed to be able to purchase the cockpit section. This isn't something just anyone can do. Full marks to you, keep it going!!
Thank you so much for your kind message. I really appreciate it! Thank you also for watching all the videos I've made so far - that means a lot to myself and the team! That is an absolutely fantastic idea, I hadn't yet thought about making such a video. I'm steadily approaching 500 subscribers, so I think I might make that video as a special thank you to my followers - in fact, I definitely will! The whole story of the aircraft and how I ended up saving the cockpit section is definitely worth documenting for sure. Once again, thank you so so much - looking forward to seeing your comments on future updates and videos!
I’ve used CPflight over in Italy and have been impressed with their quality of replica parts and service. Perhaps they could engineer bespoke parts for your project such as CDUs. I’ve also found Geremy from GLB Flight very helpful in sourcing parts for me. His East Yorkshire based company supplies real used aircraft avionics at good price. The work done by guys at Cheshire based 744Experince project, where they converted a real BA 747-400 cockpit for flight simulation is mind boggling. I’m hoping sometime next year to try out their simulator. I wish you all the best; it’s going to be challenging project, but very rewarding. Just ignore all the negative comments.
Thank you very much for your suggestions! I have heard of both companies actually. I will go and have a look at the websites for both. Yes, the 744 experience looks absolutely amazing - its exactly what I am trying to aim towards with my simulator experience. They of course have the upper deck of the 747 as well as the cockpit. The upsetting thing is, I was actually offered the entire upper deck of my 747 when they were scrapping it. However, I didn't have anywhere to keep something on such a large scale at the time which is really disappointing. It certainly will be a very challenging project, but we will finish it, of that I am certain! Thank you so much for the support - it means a lot!
Totally ignore those idiots who think they know better and so negative, chances are they are either extremely jealous or never seen inside a cockpit. I get them myself sometimes with the job i do, bugger em !
Thank you very much for the kind words. I do tend to ignore such comments, but I must admit that some of the particularly bad messages do irritate me somewhat. I agree, they are certainly jealous or have never experienced anything similar. Thank you for the advice though, very much appreciated indeed!
Absolutely. It will be very hard considering the flight deck is completely analogue. But it's been done before, and I have a whole community of people - several of whom are also doing these 747 classics. Thank you so much for watching
