Southgate shouldn't be knighted. Any competent manager would have taken that team far, but it was his tactical delusions that cost us the Euro final against Italy and the 2024 final against Spain. His resignation today is a step in the right direction.

No he doesn't. He made a major mistake in the Euro final by putting on the wrong starting line up just like he did in previous matches at Euro .. He still didn't wake up and learn as he kept them on at the beginning of the second half . Finally after about 70 minutes he takes a few players off including the useless Henry Kane and brings on Subs where England start playing better and Palmer, one of the subs brought on, scores, for England to concede another goal minutes later that lost them the trophy. England lost because of Gareth Southgate. Good riddance to him. England need a better coach
Hopefully it will be Pep Guardio next year when his contact with Man City ends. In the meantime, an interim coach who knows who that can be .

I'm a fan of Southgate and I think he is a genuine good man and has moved England forwards. but no, a knighthood requires so much more from someones life. I have these crowd pleasing sporting knighthoods.

We came second twice in the euros, back to back as well. However with the team we had and still have, we should have won both. The team is too big for him to handle. Ultimately just give the man his knighthood it means nothing anyway….
Why should we have beaten Spain? They're better than us and were better than any other team in the competition - though Germany were close to them. The last European Championship is the one we should have won when we were on top of Italy but started being negative (a mistake Italy themselves made in those two World Cup semis in '78 v Holland and in '90 v Argentina and in the Euro final in 2000 v Holland). The team of twenty years ago of Beckham, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney and Owen was better than this one but achieved much less. Surely Southgate is worthy of some credit for achieving more than most England mangers. I reckon he's in the top three with Ramsey and Bobby Robson.
@@martydav9475 yes Spain dominated this competition, but the way we played was horrendous, couldn’t even pass the ball properly or defend at all. Southgate would use subs at the most ridiculous times and barely let palmer play at all this euros as well as many of our youngsters. It’s not all his fault tho as Kane was terrible this whole time, and in the Spain match walker basically let two goals in. I’m not taking away his ability to get us to the final twice but come on, we had an actual chance of winning that final and he messed up. I do think he is getting too much hate though as he’s done a better job than any of us commenters would do managing a team.
