Unfortunately the Russian Empire enslaved half of it’s own population

    • @tylerdurden3722

Russia never had a need for large amounts manpower imports from far away, due to the large Serf population, and because there was plenty of manpower around the borders to import.
But slavery did exist, was local and unofficial, especially by Cossacks and natives in the east. The law required slave owners to convert their slaves to serfs...so large numbers of people were continuously enslaved, but were continuously being converted to serfs (because the law demanded that the can't be slaves)
Also, most regions of Africa weren't part of the slave trade. Mass slavery was part of West African culture, more slaves existed there than anywhere else on earth since ancient times. The supply was always there, but the foreign demand didn't exist until the Age of Exploration.
When the Spanish conquered central America, they brought new diseases which wiped out over 90% of the native American populations. In other words, there were virtually no native labor populations to draw from...so labor had to be imported.
At first, most of the labor imports were in the form of indentured servitude of Europeans (hence why the US is mostly white). Relating to the entire Americas, during the later stages labor (slaves) were brought in from the Indian subcontinent, South East Asia, West Africa and Portuguese colonies in Africa (a lot of middle easterners also ended up in South America, but not sure in what capacity).
Then Britain started a war against slavery to abolish it (especially, trans-Atlantic), so slavers in the Americas started breeding slaves like cattle...entire farms dedicated to breeding. And their main choice of Ethicity was West-African, using big athletic males like breeding bulls (larger slaves were worth more). More west-African Slaves were bred or imported from breeding farms, than imported directly from west-Africa.
the initial Slave trading from west africa was done by captains of ships, employed by Trading companies, who were supposed to trade in the "East India" region, but some of them secretly made some quick money on the side if they had extra time (e.g. trading slaves). The trading companies didn't like this, because it cut into their profits. Eventually, the biggest trading company, the British East India Trading Company got their government to ban such side hustles and enforce that.
