I can't believe how no one in Boston gets this. Imagine the owner and head coach in Kansas City telling Mahomes "We've Had Enough of You, it's Time For You to Go". WHAT? That's exactly what Bill Belichick and by extension, Robert Kraft effectively told Tom Brady. If there was ever a player who deserved to play out his last days with the team he took to NINE SUPER BOWLS and SIX SUPER BOWL TITLES - IT'S TOM FREAK'N BRADY. HOLY CRAP. The Patriots won the super Bowl in 2018 when Brady had one year left on his contract. And Belichick treats him like he's nickle back who's lost a step. NOPE - "that guy's too old and has to go" REALLY? Yes Bill - your quarterback is in fact different than just about anyone else on your team. He is the MAIN REASON YOU WENT TO NINE SUPERBOWLS. No one else on that team had a bigger impact on the success YOU ENJOYED as a head coach . . NO ONE. You don't kick that guy to the curb when he just one another title LAST YEAR! HOLY SHIT. And Kraft sits there and Let's his dumbass head coach do it to him. Hey Bill - how many games have you one since you couldn't stand having Brady around anymore? Holy crap people. This whole story is about how a head coach can so easily lose sight of what made him and his team so successful for so long. Just amazing.

      Perfect.
And it wasn't just Brady's on the field skills, it was his leadership in the locker room. As has been said by players they worked for Bill, they played for Tom. In essence Tom was the Coach of that team and Bill, was as said, the "strategist".

Patrick Mahomes wasn’t 37 and if you watched the games, you would have seen a bit of a decline in Brady’s play. Did you not turn on the Television during those years? “ Tom Brady is done”. All I remember is ESPN saying he was washed up around 2012,2013 etc.
TB 12 was always a leader though so I can’t completely disagree with you. Bill would always drop a player a year too soon rather that a year too late.

This was intentional by Belichick as payback against TB12 and Robert Kraft for trading Jimmy G.
Bill ego got in the way. There was no rift between Butler and Matt P.
This was so sinister and personal on part of Bill. He made sure that TB12 would not win that superbowl. He wanted Brady to go that bad, but Kraft overruled him, and Jimmy G was traded.
There is no explanation for sitting one of your best players on defense in a game of that magnitude. None.

Malcolm Butler has not come out publicly and revealed the reason. If you felt you were wronged publicly, wouldn't you want to set the record straight? He hasn't done this. The only reason I can think of for not doing so is that the reason he was benched is because he did something he is embarrassed about and would prefer the public not to know.

Patriot players have told several stories about why that happened and teddy bruschi said something about it as well.
So earlier in that season belichek was secretly trying to trade Brady somewhere and someone in the front office gave Tom Brady the heads up about belichek trying to trade him. Brady called Robert Kraft and said "bills trying to trade me" and kraft didn't know about it because he gave Bill total and complete control of the front office. Kraft personally stepped in and called off the trade. Bill was pissed.
So instead Bill trades Jimmy garoppolo to San Francisco for like a 2nd rd pick. San Francisco was willing to give up a first rd pick for him but Bill said he only wanted a 2nd rd pick. Belichek was mad that Kraft stepped in and called off the trade so he threw the superbowl in a very subtle way by holding out one of their best defenders.
Also thatvwas Malcolm butler contract season and Bill was going to offer him a lowball contract to stay. He was pretty much trying to keep Malcolm's market low so other teams wouldn't offer him something huge that the patriots would either have to match or end up losing him.
JulianEdelman, bruschi, and somebody else talked about it separate times on different podcasts but all the stories line up with what was happening that season.

Halfway through the 2017 season the 49ers approached Belechick about acquiring Jimmy Garappolo. Belechick said no but offered Tom Brady instead. The 49ers said yes. Then Robert Kraft found out and actually overrode Belechick’s decision, kept Brady and gave Garappolo to the 49ers. Belechick was so pissed off that as the Patriots were headed out to play the Eagles in that year’s Super Bowl, he told Butler that he wasn’t playing. Belechick then let Matt Patricia run the game and sat down and did nothing. I remember Brady walking back and forth in front of Belechick sitting on the bench and looking at him with disbelief. Belechick threw that game to make a point to Rob Kraft. In my opinion, the Patriots should have had at least two more Super Bowl victories to their tally. But Belechick’s ego was the reason why Butler was benched that day. The same ego that sent Brady out of New England by the back door after giving the Patriots the best ride of their lives for 20 years. The same ego that pretty much single handedly demolished an NFL superbowl franchise.

Belichick always preached "do your job" and held everyone accountable yet he didn't think he owed his team an explanation as to why a 3 year starter didn't play a single defensive snap in the fricken Superbowl. Brian hoyer said butler practiced all week with first team defense so what happened basically overnight? In my mind there is no way butler being on the sidelines in tears didn't effect the entire defense if not the team. Especially the secondary when players like mccourty and harmon knew what butler could do, knew his tendencies and so on, knew he was going to do his job so I'm sure they were in their heads all game knowing they had to help out that side more or whatever. Couldn't of been that bad if butler still played on special teams and Belichick brought butler back a few years later. Does anyone really think in 2008-2010 Belichick would of hired Romeo Cornell to coach the offense? Bills ego got out of control and he thought his system could win with any cigs, loosing sight of the fact of having the ultimate QB for his coaching style, the QB who could take the abuse (players words) , take less money and stay motivated to prove everyone wrong. And I'm sick of hearing about that rams sb like belichecks mona Lisa , Sean mcvay was in awe of bill and Jared Goff was basically pissing down his leg. And even with all that the biggest play to seal the win still came down to Brady to gronk. Two players Belichick wanted to move on from earlier. Yah gronk was a goof ball but always showed up in crunch time, never got into trouble, always put team and football first and did whatever was asked of him, was basically an extra offensive lineman for that 2018 season. And bill rewards him by trading him to Matt Patricias dumpster fire lions. Luckily gronk said "trade me and I retire" was so close to the end gronk went and played two very good seasons in tampa. Even played 16 games that first year. And didn't have the giant elbow pads and braces. Certain players on gronks level can afford to take a practice off and deliver on game day. Even after all this time , a 4 win season and being fired bill still can't admit he was wrong about Brady. After having a front row seat to the guy defying odds for years. Aside from 2007 age 37-43/44 was the best version of Brady in my opinion. A while Jimmy glass can't finish a 4 game stint while Bradys suspended , couldn't finish the season when starting it as a backup and on and on. The worse part is there are a lot of fans who still worship Belichick, think it was all Kraft's fault for some reason. For the record I have NOT watched a single episode of the dynasty, this has always been my opinion, yes Belichick is a great defensive coach but without Brady it never worked. Belichick had no problem paying the Steph gilmores, or donte hightowers, (loved them both as players ) but when it came to the other side of the ball wasn't willing to give Chris Hogan $1 mill a year, or consistently asking offensive players to restructure their deal, a deal Belichick made. Majority of edelmans career he was severely underpaid. All while bill was by far the highest paid coach in the NFL. By FAR! There is a difference between being coaches hard and just being a straight up jerk. Did the players get to call out bill in the film study when butler was on the bench and nick foles was looking like Payton Manning against bill defense? I could go on and on cause I'm old enough to remember Boston / NE sports before 2001, it was disappointment to say the least and I grew up hearing about the curse of the bambino well ill be telling my kids about the Brady curse, how we had the Greatest QB ever (and tightened ) and a 17/18 year run of dominance/glory and some crusty, crabby, stuck in his ways old coach who couldn't change with the times and threw it away. Pure example, bill wanted to trade gronk and then was surprised when he retires and yet had no plan, brought in a 38/39 yr old tightened in Watson. So at 38/39 a QB is past his prime but a tightened isn't bill? I mean Watson was fricken retired . And then Brady leaves and uh well cam newton is cheap, well take him. Why so eager to get rid of a player when there is nothing to replace them?

I still think most people have it wrong. As the dynasty documentary (and even more so the dynasty book) makes clear, it was always personal with Belichick in that it was always about control. Spygate for him was all about weaseling out of it and Kraft went to bat for him at the expense of the team’s reputation. He recruited Aaron Hernandez on the cheap even though he was warned against it and then gave him special treatment, something that he supposedly never did, to the point that other players, noticed it and resented it. But then when Hernandez wanted a trade to get away from the people who were going to screw up his life, Belichick refused. Instead of quite rightly, fighting deflategate as a total manufactured scandal cooked up by the ravens, and carried out by the Colts, he threw Brady under the bus. From 2014 on, he tried to get rid of Brady, even though evidence suggested that Brady was as good as ever. He brought in Jimmy G and again gave him preferential treatment. the Trump letter was another example of Belichick violating his own rules and alienated his own players not only for no benefit but to the detriment of the team. I actually think the Malcolm Butler benching had more to do with Belichick trying to teach certain people on his team a lesson, than with anything Butler did or said. I mean, what was that weird attempt by NE to do a response Philly Special in SB 52? He spent 80% of his top draft picks on defensive players. Even Randy Moss, the one superstar, wide receiver, Brady had chance to work with, was acquired on the cheap, because he was supposedly “washed.” The entire team, but especially Brady, famously took pay cuts for the team, but then when Brady left and won a Super Bowl, Belichick blamed Brady for “leaving the cupboard bare.” As hard as it is to believe, the Patriots could have been even more dominant if Belichick had not so often, unconsciously or not, sabotaged himself and them.

Too many people get caught in the emotion of Malcolm Butler.
Butler's first year as a start in the NFL he finished the year ranked 12th out of 64 starting DBs.
The year the Patriots lost to the Eagles he finished 48th out of 64 starting DBs. He also threatened to not give his best in the Super Bowl if they didn't give him the contract he wanted. That story was ALWAYS there but no one wanted to report it.
Butler's first year with the Titans he finished 64 out of 64 starting DBs.
Love or hate Bill, the reason players NEVER talk crap about him is because EVEN when the player is in the wrong Bill doesn't say a damn thing. Bill shoots from the hip. The players know where they stand with him. They may not like it but they respect it because he doesn't throw them under the bus or air dirty laundry.

Bill ego got in the way. There was no rift between Butler and Matt P.
This was so sinister and personal on part of Bill. He made sure that TB12 would not win that superbowl. He wanted Brady to go that bad, but Kraft overruled him, and Jimmy G was traded.

No one thinks Brady was everything but i think people appreciate the intangibles he contributed more with each passing year; it seems Belichek thought he was everything though and thought he was above the kind of accountability he demanded of those beneath him.

Something Smith said about fit and culture took me back. As a long time Falcons ticket holder I thought maybe a smarter BB coming in with winning pedigree and Josh McDaniels offensive scheme would work well. But this took me back to Bobby Petrino who many blame his failure on the Vick fiasco. But it was bigger than that and he didn’t fit culturally. I believe that’s something Rich McKay thought about with Arthur Blank and the possible pursuit of BB. Maybe in New England that worked while 12 and McDaniels had the offense clicking but may have been disruptive in Flowery Branch🏈

Here's what I think: I think Bill has ALWAYS held grudges et al. But I think his all-consuming passion for winning was always even greater and took precedence. Until the past several years. Bill got more and more comfortable with his accomplishments and legacy, more and more convinced every decision he made was correct (and surrounded by fewer and fewer assertive and talented assistants who might push back). I think this is obvious when you look at more and more of his decisions since, oh, 2016. I've said this for three years now: Bill IS comfortable with his legacy (Greg Bedard even invoked the Seinfeld suit of velvet). Entirely. Michael Smith is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in his assumptions re: why Bill wouldn't be hired. I LOVE the "shock" that no one wants to hire a 70+ super-set-in-his-ways guy who's had absolute control, not been successful lately and probably wants $20M a season to coach for what, three years? Yes, shocking indeed.

Patriot players have told several stories at different times about why that happened and teddy bruschi said something about it as well.

For a long time, I thought the reason Malcolm was held out of the game was because he significantly injured himself with a NFI the night before, and because he was an impending free agent, Bill decided to take the heat and look like the bad guy as a thank you to Malcolm so that he could get his money. There's probably some chance that admitting to not disclosing the injury would subject the team to discipline or subject Butler to being sued by Tennessee after they paid him. The doc is the first opportunity they had to change the narrative and they didn't do it, and I'm wondering if it's a work, and by keeping a salacious lie going it distracts from what actually happened.

You're missing the point maybe. You kind of hit it at the end. Pats will win SB the following year, with DEFENSE. So yeah, Malcolm disrespected Bills kid. a coach. some have said it was physical. and that explains the hush hush. They WERE doing Malcolm a solid bc no team wants that guy. Malcom went on the make some money.
But even that's not it. Part of it. Convenient for sure. It was really about Tom and Bill. Bill was told how to handle Jimmy G by Kraft inc.. Eventually that was settled by giving a nice family discount to SF for Jimmy G, at the expense of the Patriots. What's good for the team right?
Oh the Krafts think Tom is so great? I would do him like I did Bledsoe. I got Jimmy G! cough
In an act of "Ill show you" .Bill wanted Brady to put or shut up. Just put the team on your shoulders and be the hero....by scoring 40+ fn pts in a Super bowl no less. Which Tom almost pulled off. From there Bill used that leverage to force Tom to bend, play a slow offense style, no mistakes. yawn. hard to argue with the results. But really, Bill wanted to win without Tom, he resented being told what to do, and in the end he got exposed. Everyone has their weakness. Bill's is pride. Tom on the other hand ..... haha

I'm late to this party but IMO, Belichick should never again be trusted with a HC position. He's borderline megalomaniacal, and a cancer in any position of authority. I would hire him as a DC with very minimal authority only. He's also a HUGE hypocrite. He expects EVERYONE ELSE to be accountable and team driven so, WHY ISN'T HE??!! It's abundantly clear that Belichick is a brilliant Narcissist. He's the best defensive and tactical mind the game has ever seen, but he has NO respect for offense and offensive players, and NO respect for the Owner that employs him. He has repeatedly undermined what was best for the team while claiming otherwise. Sitting Malcolm Butler in SB 52 threw ALL Players under the Bus! How was that best for the TEAM?! Players are human and all different. It's a HC duty to manage personalities and CREATE an atmosphere of SUCCESS for overall TEAM benefit! Ruining the starting QB consciously or unconsciously because he isn't "your guy" is Textbook NARCISSISM and absolutely NOT what is “BEST” for the TEAM! Belichick does what is best for his EGO! He may have cut his football teeth under Navy Athletics, and he may THINK he runs a team modeled on the military, but he does NOT! He FORGOT that EVERY serviceman swears an oath and is accountable to a higher authority! The Admiral or General, may not agree with or even respect The President, but it's their duty to their country to follow orders and to NEVER undermine or subvert “The Boss” or the MEN under their command. Belichick repeatedly does both. IMO, players were willing to endure the "Belichick Way" because they believed TB12 ensured a legitimate SB shot year after year. Yes, the defenses were equally important to the repeated success, but The GOAT was the GLUE that held it all together. When the glue dissolved, it unsurprisingly fell apart.

Bill is the luckiest man in sports history. The planets aligned themselves to make him look like he knew what he was doing. Subtract Tom Brady from his life & do the math. 😂

The truth is that the owner was trying to protect the ego of his franchise player Tom Brady after it was Butler who made the winning play to win the SB not Tom Brady. Butler received high praise and many acts of appreciation from Kraft after that win. However, Kraft still felt the need to avoid any possibility that Brady would start feeling "some kind of way" other than the "real Tom Brady". So Butler started receiving a different kind of treatment (undeserving of course). My Tom was a sensitive dude who needed a different kind of maintenance. And I would bet that Tom knew this but wasn't😢 for whatever reason, compelled to do anything about it. Folks are always trying to drop shade Belichick. Makes no sense.
This show in particular is probably one of the most vapid, long winded articulate sports analysis I seen on youtube. I know you very smart brothers can do better than this.

My personal interpretation after watching The Dynasty on Apple about the Malcolm Butler benching is that Belichik probably informed Malcolm about his reduced role in the gameplan against Philly which was probably matchup related with Malcolm being a small guy and they probably had a heated exchange which led to a punishment due to insubordination.

The whole Malcolm Butler thing is overblown. Everyone acts like the guy was Dion Sanders. He would have made not one single difference in that game. Neither defense was stopping either one of those offenses. And the one big play Butler made in his career, against the Seahawks, was an absolute idiot call by Pete Carrol. If he runs the ball or rolls Wilson out, no one would have ever even heard of Malcolm Butler.

The problem was Butler was the best at his position and was never given the opportunity to play. Pats fans have every right to think they had a chance when their best player at a given position is in the game.

@@conchobar Best on the Pats, which that season didn't mean much. Play him don't play him. Nick Foles was still going to torch that defense.

Nobody's acting like he's Dion Sanders! But with the defense getting SCORCHED all night, it might help if u had your best defensive back on the field! Belicheck has ALWAYS been an EGOTISTIC NARCISSIST! Thats why he's UNEMPLOYED now!😂

The point is the defense gave up 40 and it was a close game. Missing a starting corner in that context matters. It doesn't matter who it was and if they were a bona fide star. And I think everyone can agree he was an above average starter.

He had bad practices and didn't seem ready to play. That was it. It wasn't personal. People are making a mountain out of a molehill. He was never a top-tier corner, Bill just utilized him perfectly, which is why he failed outside of New England. If Bill said he wasn't ready, he wasn't ready.
