He was right. He said the whole of the campaign will be determined in the south. If he was still alive in early ‘43 he must of been in despair especially after fighting through another winter. One minute he is giving a soldier a promotion next the newly promoted man is dead. These diaries are quite sad but fascinating at the same time. Thanks for bringing them to us. My father fought in the war but would never speak about it. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

"Since corrupt people unite amongst themselves to constitute a force, then honest people must do the same, its as simple as that" - Leo Tolstoy - 1869 - War And Peace
One problem though and its a big one, we say they're corrupt and they say we're corrupt, we say we're honest and they say they're honest and so evil war goes on and on and on.

    The destruction of an army.
    Sad.
    War is hell.

This is quoted from General Sherman's (1879) speech about his war experiences. "I've seen cities and homes in ashes. I've seen thousands of men lying on the ground, their dead faces looking up at the skies. I tell you, war is Hell." So, that's where we got that "War is Hell" quote

"How do these bastards stand until the death."
Same way the germans stood to repel the Ivans. To keep the invader out!

Germans killed by their own mines.
In Vietnam, the Aussies called their minefield, the V.C supply dump, as the enemy used their own mines against them.
You have to wonder if this is what happened here.

Had my ancestors not moved the Pennsylvania in the 1850s or so, my family likely would have fought as German soldiers. While i feel way worse for those millions hitler made suffer, i sometimes feel bad for the german soldiers who really did just fight for their country and thought they were dying as heroes. Not all of them were evil, many thought they were doing the right thing and died for it. And now they are hated for it

Might make an interesting series to read diary entries corresponding to the current day, week or month.

I always enjoy these dairy reports but I wish that a German speaker could correct the the translations. The brainless AI makes some howling mistakes.
"We spotted them in time. The bright moon covered everything perfectly." This makes absolutely no sense.

This is an amazing channel. I listen to many of the videos. I am curious, though, of what Ivan's expirenecd. Perhaps just a few Russian diaries would be nice. Thank you, and keep up the great work. The narrator is excellent.

Sounds like Martin is starting to feel a little bit uncomfortable with the number of Russians that seem to come from no were.

Hey, are these computer generated voices? Sounds pretty real, but does have some emotion at appropriate times.

This diary reveals a very odd mindset. He seems to object to the Russians defending their own country. One of his friends is killed, and he hopes 'it will be on the conscience' of the Soviet sniper. What utter lack of insight! Is it 'in his conscience' when he blows up a Russian pillbox? No, it is 'a grand firework display'. With stupidity of this order, it is no wonder Germany lost the war. Technical superiority alone cannot make up for lack of psychological insight.

During 1942, a German soldier used a very modern term 'human trafficking'. Makes me wonder how legit this "diary" is...

This is obviously a translation, likely "people transport" would be a more literal one.
