    Rotate the wheels after filling with new oil this will dissipate the oil around the gears and you'll get more oil into the gearbox. The torque on those fill / drain plugs is 25nm. Likely the way you did it without rotating the wheels might mean your gearbox oil level is slightly low, might be worth checking after driving for while as with gearbox oil better to slightly overfill than under. This is probably the reason you could not get the full fill volume in.

      was gonna write something similar. According to OEM manual for 1.6; top up the oil, then (with all four wheels off the ground , I assume) turn on the engine and put into gear for about two minutes, then top up again.

      The service manual says to fill 1.7 litres of fluid in the reverse switch sensor hole then nothing more. I have read a lot of people commenting that they put in much more fluid. Am I missing something in the manual ?

    You also need to remove the ALU plate with 2 screws (with VW logo) under the gearbox and only then will all the oil be out. There is at last cca 0,5 liters. I did a few oil changes in the gerbox on the VW 1.6 and 1.9 tdi and it fits cca 1.9l and in the 2.0tdi about 2.1l

    This video is inaccurate, as there is `no way` that you can fill 1.8 litres (which is the recommended quantity ) of oil through the side plug in the gearbox, it is a physical impossibility, and using this method you would seriously `underfill` the gearbox, even when the car (or van) sits at a tilt rearward angle. Unfortunately, removal of the `reversing light switch` appears to be the only way of replenishing gearbox oil to the correct level.

I'm undertaking a very long journey in the next couple of weeks and in 100k I'm not aware that the gearbox oil has not been changed. My question is was there a particular reason you opted for the fully synthetic Comma 75w rather than the semi synthetic and whether you've noticed any difference with gear changes, quietness or fuel economy..? Many thanks.

      Hi Gary thanks for watching and leaving a comment. The reliable guys at my local garage suggested the clunking noise from under the bonnet was coming from the 'drive train' (which I think means gearbox) and recommended changing the gearbox oil (175k on the clock). I looked on GSF website where I usually get my parts from and they had part number 980AA2750 as the recommended oil. Fully synthetic. The 'clunking' noise has reduced but to be honest I'm not sure the shift, economy etc is any different. I believe gearbox oil in VW's is good for the lifetime of the vehicle and unless you have a problem I would suggest leaving well alone. Best wishes b33zo

    Great video but you missed a part, right at the bottom of the gearbox where the vw symbol is to the right and left of it are torx bolts you are supposed to take to one out close to the side of the box as well about another 1/4 of a litre comes out . How slow was it filling thru reverse light switch....im going to do mine in a few days and looking for advice.

    100% disagree with your theories, check VW service manual. Whole process is done wrong. There is a proper and longer procedure. You completely ignored the valve below air box that needs to be switched to release all oil. You got maybe 1/3? Never refill gearbox without measuring.... too much and bye bye gearbox???

    All, you need to drop the VW badge cap that's between the fill and the drain because when you do, you'll get a good litre out of it. That one at the back doesn't appear to be the true drain point as such

      Yes ive seen that in the haynes manual but no one here on youtube is mentioning that. To be accurate as per the haynes manual its not the VW Badge cap...its the bolt ( Pivot Pin) near it, the one closest to the passenger side BUT BEFORE YOU DO THAT THE SELECOR FORK MUST BE LOCKED ON TOP OF THE GEARBOX. I cant verify this applies here to this video but it is the case with my car Golf 2012 1.6 TDI. Any thoughts?? I have never done it but curious about removing the pivot pin as im cautious and like to hear peoples experience before i go at it and not get any nasty surprise. Thanks...

      Hi Richard thanks for watching. No issues that I've noticed. If I did this again I would drain into an empty tray/bowl so that I could see how much fluid came out. Some of the guys suggest rotating the wheels (in gear) as that will push more oil out. When it comes to refilling you'll have a better idea of if enough has gone back in. As you saw the gearbox was overflowing when I sealed it up - which used to be the accepted way of topping up gearboxes. Good luck b33zo

    Reading some online manuals, it is best to fill from the reverse sensor plus, the filler hole is in the wrong place and the selector should be locked down to apply pressure.
    How much oil did you manage to get in using this method? With the car leaning back on stands, you are probs overfilling it from the bottom but doing it correctly as it underfills from that plug.

    • @adnanafzal6606
      @adnanafzal6606 4 роки тому

      @@hahahehe9957 if you check the workshop manual (i can't remember where i found it), there are slight different variants of the gearboxes, that's probably ome reason for the different numbers. My one, the refill amount was 1.7l but the total capacity was 1.9l (bare bones dry). That's maybe a second reason.
      Imo, check your gearbox code, get the workshop manual and cross check it. If you order from a dealership, they can confirm the amount also.
      A third reason, alot of people have said the gearboxes were underfilled from the factory due to the technical bulletin on the filling up through the reverse sensor. Normally, when changing any cars gearbox oil u get 1l oil u put 1l back in, but i think because of above, people are filling to whatever number they can find on the internet!

    • @adnanafzal6606
      @adnanafzal6606 4 роки тому +1

      @@hahahehe9957 i think it really comes down to how you want to the book you want to be.
      The official vw method is through the reverse sensor, the manual explains this due to the mounting tilt of the gearbox. Practically though, it is probably only 200ml-300ml of difference which i don't think would make a big difference.
      The author of this video did it using the fill hole and don't think he has had any issues. Maybe there is an argument you are reducing the longevity of the gearbox. When i followed the manual, i only got 1.2l out, i strongly suspect the gearbox was underfilled from factory.
      I used the reverse sensor hole for peace of mind, taking the battery and airbox out is a doddle. Also, the most important part, by doing this method you can lock the gearbox mount, that pressure ensures enough gearbox oil comes out.
      The original method was the fill hole (as in this video), but due to vw integration issues, the tilt on the gearbox means the hole isn't high enough.
      Check out the workshop manuals, all the answers are in there.

    You just get 500ml in it must get 1.8 or 1.9 liters in gearbox

    I would like to add that o refilling, you need to turn the wheels so that the gears spin the oil over into the furthest compartment.

    You precisely do not wnt to wear latex gloves (you need vinyl, or other appropriate material) for this as the latex is dissolved in oil.

    Hello. I found one video where one guy change oil with little bit different method. ua-cam.com/video/uVlboxLunzM/v-deo.html He remove airfilterbox, lock shifting mechanism, remove main drain plug and remove one black cup closer to wheel. there was another 0,5l oil in this part of gearbox. Then he fill oil by removed reverse switch. Is there anybody who has ow who know original service procedure? Thanks

      Thanks for watching Martin. The car (now on 192k) has done 6k miles on my oil change so hope it will get to 200k okay...

    • @martinleska4292
      @martinleska4292 4 роки тому

      @@b33zo I think, there is nothing bed with this "easyer" procedure. If you change 80% of oil it is still better than nothing. But I think lot of cars run more than 300k km with original oil without problems.

    This is not the correct way to do this, you didn't get half the oil out. If you're looking for the correct way to change the oil on this gearbox, this is not the way to do it.!

      Hi Norman thanks for watching. There's a website called workshop-manuals (dot com) forward slash volkswagen which has masses of technical information listed including the fluid capacities. You may find the answer there.

      75w
      75w80
      Or 75w90. Gear oil is fine.
      Originally VW is only 75w gear oil
      But some people upgrade to 75w90.
      As long as it’s quality gear oil it will do the job.
