9 months ago I was in $70k in debt and I stumbled on your channel and Dave Ramsey’s …. Thanks god! You guys gave me hope and I did it. I paid it all off and now I’m working on my emergency fund . Frugality and writing down a budget works
My husband is about 20 years older than me and retired, so I’ve been having the internal conversation about taking care of myself if something happens to him. It may sound morbid (although he and I talk about it), but I would rather be prepared for what my expenses will or won’t be in the future without his income.
I stopped buying some things because the price increase was absolutely ridiculous. I never understood people who say I don’t have enough. I’ve been blessed to always think I do have enough, but that’s always been my mindset.
I smiled at the “I’ll always have a car payment.” When my father was teaching me about budgeting, he used that phrase to indicate there will always be an expense line in the budget for current needs or future needs, for example an unexpected medical bill or an appliance that needs to be replaced. His terminology may have had room for improvement but the concept was solid. I meet the requirements to have free banking so I segregate funds in separate saving accounts for example annual billing of property taxes, income taxes and future living expenses. I am old now and I am debt free because I know how to face reality and have fun with goal setting.
We would say "it is not in the budget at this time" instead of "we are broke". 😂It felt more positive as if we did have control. We always felt if we wanted something bad enough we would make the sacrifices necessary to cash flow. Hubby has said "what does Dave say?" Always lived below our means and still have a great life.
“Enough”! I promise that at some point in life you’ll have too much stuff. My husband and I are older and already had two of everything we needed when we married 4 years ago. In lieu of gifts, we asked for donations to our church. We raised $5200 and also did not have to cope with where to put a bunch of wedding gifts we didn’t need. 💕🎉💵 🎁
Love the way you two inspire me to find a solution. I have worked for a company for 9 years and thought id be with this company until I retired! But I find myself in the sad position that I will probably have to leave as the business can't "afford" to pay me for the weekend and evening rates that I work. So it's time to move on it is a challenge But I'm up for it!
I'm sure an opportunity will present itself as you look for a new job. It's hard for businesses to find reliable, stable people to work for them. 9 years at one company spells reliability.
Odd. My positive statements for the last many years are: 1. I will never have a car payment again! 2. I will never have a house payment again. And 3. I will never run up a credit card again! I have a 14 y.o car I bought with cash, the house I inherited from my parents and every time I get to charging too much, I put the credit card away in my safe until it's paid down! I'm retired and live alone so it's easier not to buy much now. I still need to put away more in my sinking fund. But patience is a virtue. It takes awhile to right things after a major expense or investment..But these pep talks you give help a lot. 👍😻 .
The statements about the future taking care of itself are a pet peeve of mine….This was a favorite of my parents. My mom died soon after having a simple heart procedure and she was the one who dealt their money. I quickly found out how unprepared they were. Thankfully, we can support my dad now but only because we have prepared for such a case.
Gratitude for what you have is so powerful, it could only be a Gift from The LORD and a template for life. I am so grateful for everything we've been Blessed with, it extends the joy in every area of life: money, relationships, health, etc. When you Thank The LORD for your many Blessings, it's very difficult to complain. Great video guys, we love you both and your lovely family x
One thing I’ve noticed with friends is spur-of-the-moment things they want to do. I’m a planner so I like to plan out my days, my budget, etc. I routinely turn down invites for these unplanned things because I haven’t budgeted for them and some of them might not hold a lot of value to me. If someone wants to go shopping, I can be a passive observer and just enjoy the company and not spend. But when they want to do something like go carts, eating out, putt putt golf, an amusement park, etc., more often than not I say no because it WILL require spending money I haven’t budgeted for.
Can you budget in a category for surprise outings? Then, when one pops up for which you're both interested in and have enough money set aside, you can choose to go. I also try to keep in mind opportunities that will give me the best bang for my buck as far as time goes. One hour at a dinner costs the same as four hours doing other activities. I also try to encourage options that don't cost anything more than I'd usually be spending like potlucks, walks together, or hanging by the firepit/on the porch. I also love things that accomplish two goals like volunteering or decluttering together.
I love being invited to do something with a friend, but like you I don't want it to break my budget. I have a list of friends I want to make sure I keep up with and I'll often call one to see if they want to drive to a state park and hike the trails (I usually bring breakfast that I cook once we arrive at the park....or I pack a lunch for us - this helps us not to spend money at a restaurant on the way home.). Other ideas: drive to the east end of town, find a high point and watch the sunrise with a thermos of coffee. Or drive to the west end of town for a sunset. Grab a friend and volunteer at the soup kitchen. Walk the neighborhood. Come hang out at my house for afternoon pie and chat. Watch a football game at their house since I don't have cable (I always bring homemade wings or chips/dip). I try to avoid the outings I can't afford by making sure I get a lot of "dates" in that I can afford.
@@TheReflectivePerspectiveI do budget for things like this. But I could never budget enough for the amount of times they want to go out to breakfast, lunch or dinner. So it’s not big things like theater tickets or the putt putt or go karts that sneak up, it’s predominantly the eating out. With the price of restaurant meals, coupled with the fact that I just don’t prefer them, I find myself saying No a lot. I did discuss it with my bestie and she totally understands.
Omg the only shopping Ive been doing is groceries like month or biweekly. I did good today I saved like $75.00 in coupons and omg that because we had finished pantry items too. My saying about Credit Cards: Using a credit card is spending part of your next paycheck before you get it! Which means, you will already be behind come next payday. My husband got tired of me talking about Dave Ramsey. His plan works; however. I did say “We are broke” a lot because I didn’t want people to ask to borrow money. I found myself aimlessly perusing the Kohl's sale on-line this last week. So, you are not alone in that temptation. I didn't buy anything. But, any time I find myself just "seeing what's on sale" without looking for something specific, it can be a money and time waster for me.
Lol...I'm glad I'm not alone. It's the 30 percent off the clearance price that gets me. We all need clothes and 17 items at 6 to 8 dollars an item won't necessarily break the bank but when you do it every other week or once a month even, it all adds up. And I don't need the clothes, I just like shopping. Well, no more for me. I've decided no more clothes for one year!
I have learned a lot from you two, thank you very much!! I love this video, it's very positive, very realistic of how we all have said these things!! It's so important that we use a viewpoint of a "can do" attitude and this video gives that mindset. And Yes, Larry's analogies are super good!! You both are great teachers to help find ways to save and life is grand!! :- )
Great list, guys. We shared a video with grocery shopping mistakes that people make and it all boiled down to using using the words always and never. Your list made me think of that. 🥰
I have a confession to make... the first time I came across your channel I READ.. 'LIVING BELOW The MEDIUM'...... And immediately I visualized some couple, living in a tent.. under a highway off ramp. 😢 To this day I can't shake that visual ⛺️ Certainly that would be one way to save money... but living under the Median makes far more sense. 👍 😅
This is a great video. Thank you! Definitely going to add some positive phrases to my thinking. Also, thanks for reminding me that budgets take 3-6 months to dial in. That was helpful.
Every time you mention THAT certain phone company, I have to say: I LOVE MINT MOBILE! The phone service is great and the price is so reasonable I can pay an entire year at a time. I LOVE MINT MOBILE!
Damn I wish I would have been listening to you earlier. I should gotten a condo in central cali at least i would have had a place with my name instead of renting now. Still working at it and i do have to save for retirement too. 😊
Yeah we will always have a mortgage or rent 😅 I'm almost 40, my over 40 husband is finally retiring from the military, the housing market is insane, and it's a miracle if we can even buy a house 😔
Great advice as always.. We are in our early 60s.. live in Canada, so economic things were similar.. we used a lot of your strategies, also know who Dave Ramsey is, lol.. .. I'd say I was fairly frugal, but we have lived fairly comfortably over our lives, thru some interesting circumstances that life will throw us.. but, we have managed to save some for our retirement, thankfully.. (strangely not enough for today's inflation rates.. 😮..) Luv'd the Helen Reddy reference.. now there was a lady, lol... ❤😊
Tried my best to live with no debt. Some can do it they were not thrown out age 16. Back then 16 with a bike and a job isn't a good start especially if you are not set up. I'm now a senior citizen and I'm not rich but I'm wealthy. Only bcuz I own my own slumlord property.
Just bought a home cash. I won’t even make payments on insurance and taxes. I prepay then save each month the monthly payment and then pay cash again next year. Why give the interest to these companies?
Excellent video! Mindset is key to success in finances as well as other areas of life. Income and external circumstances don't have to control us. A positive attitude, hard work ethic and willingness to learn and change will help anyone succeed.
I have noticed a few prices have come down on some quality canned food due to people cutting back.$1.00 per can is a good deal.I buy just what is on my list.
Regarding emergency fund. I think it makes sense to have a credit card as your emergency fund if you have a balance on your credit card, better to pay down the credit card as fast as possible, then when it is zero, start an emergency fund. Also, I buy many things on my credit card because if something happens, I do not get the product, it is faulty, I can charge back on it (yes I pay off the total outstanding balance once a month - not jsut the balance on the most recent statement).
Saying you’re always going to be poor is like saying you’re always going to have a car payment. Having a car is pretty much a necessity, but having the payment isn’t. I have loads of friends who say this all the time, as they’re driving their brand new vehicle that cost $50,000.
We use "that just doesn't fit our priorities," rather than we can't afford it. Have seen at least one person pick it up and credited us with the change of mind set.
I luv your channel On watching this I am here to ask a question Would u do a vlog about us "50-60 yr olds" who didn't save for our retirement ....is there hope 🙏 for us? Asking for a friend 😉
Put everything you have behind paying your home off. Throw all you have at it. Quit spending money on anything you don't absolutely need apply that to the principle of the loan. Look up: "How We Paid Our Mortgage off in 5 Years." It's an old video we did 3 years ago. We give a lot of tips and tell how we paid off our first home in 5 years.
Speaking about how you control your reaction to things, if you don’t like something, try to change it! I’m a government employee, but I paid many, many years into social security and will probably be subjected to the windfall elimination provision. I know I’m not going to reach the 30 year threshold to not be affected by it so instead of complaining, I joined two groups trying to modify/repeal it. It’s at least worth the effort to try since I have the time before retirement.
I have a very aggressive five year plan and therefore a very aggressive budget. You both have helped me so much by recommending Mint. I am paying for six months a little bit more than I would’ve paid for one month with the AT&T. This is helping my budget dramatically. I did credit you both to Mint. 😊 and I want to thank you so much for helping my budget goals be realized!
Hope and Larry, i am not sure how it works in the USA, does the employer pay into the employee's retirement fund? i find it odd here, i am an Australian, by law 11% of my wage goes to a retirement fund. in a sense i have a massive saving account i cannot touch until i reach retirement age. this is not a gift from my employer but money i am in a sense forced to save. btw it is a great system once you get your head around it
Hi Larry and Hope, I love watching your UA-cam‘s. They’re always so informative. I have a question for you. I am on a fixed budget expenses are going up. I pay $30 a month for my phone and it doesn’t work unless I have an Internet in my home the Internet is costing me $50. I do not watch TV I do not have cable, my question is how can I cut this down? I’ve called several different Internet services. No one comes out as far as my ZIP Code. Is there something I can do? I appreciate your help. Thank you.

LOL! Thank you, Tricia. I love playing off of Hope.
I love Latrrys analogies and come backs. You 2 a pair meant to ne. Thank you for alll your encouragement!🎶❣️🙏🌻✌️🤟🌺🍨😻🦒🦒
You are so welcome, Linda! Blessings!
Great list, guys. We shared a video with grocery shopping mistakes that people make and it all boiled down to using using the words always and never. Your list made me think of that. 🥰
Thank you, Joeland.
I have a confession to make... the first time I came across your channel I READ.. 'LIVING BELOW The MEDIUM'...... And immediately I visualized some couple, living in a tent.. under a highway off ramp. 😢 To this day I can't shake that visual ⛺️
Certainly that would be one way to save money... but living under the Median makes far more sense. 👍 😅
So glad you got that sorted out. LOL! Thank you.
We buy a lot of things to hedge against inflation, using sales often for items.
This is a great video. Thank you! Definitely going to add some positive phrases to my thinking. Also, thanks for reminding me that budgets take 3-6 months to dial in. That was helpful.
Thank you, Aleell.
Every time you mention THAT certain phone company, I have to say: I LOVE MINT MOBILE! The phone service is great and the price is so reasonable I can pay an entire year at a time. I LOVE MINT MOBILE!
We are very happy with Mint. Thank you, User.
Damn I wish I would have been listening to you earlier. I should gotten a condo in central cali at least i would have had a place with my name instead of renting now. Still working at it and i do have to save for retirement too. 😊
This was a good one! You two are so much fun together ... Larry's silly voices crack me up!
Yeah we will always have a mortgage or rent 😅 I'm almost 40, my over 40 husband is finally retiring from the military, the housing market is insane, and it's a miracle if we can even buy a house 😔
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I've been slacking lately. Gotta get back on track.
Love your videos.
Luv'd the Helen Reddy reference.. now there was a lady, lol...
❤😊
Super Love this video! Attitude and perspective are truly key!
Thank you!
This is one of your best talks And it made me laugh! Y’all are just so positive all the time and it’s much appreciated
Excellent!
Excellent video! Mindset is key to success in finances as well as other areas of life. Income and external circumstances don't have to control us. A positive attitude, hard work ethic and willingness to learn and change will help anyone succeed.
Thank you, Fred! So true.
Greatly appreciate your channel 🥂
Thank you, Carol!
I have noticed a few prices have come down on some quality canned food due to people cutting back.$1.00 per can is a good deal.I buy just what is on my list.
Good plan, Jerry.
"I think you're hot enough" 😂😂oh Larry! I just love the banter and great advice!!!! ❤
Y'all are awesome thanks for the advice
Thank you, Rachel!
Great video, you two are a great team.😊😊
You two are so adorable together!!!
Awe, thank you, Nicole!
The blooper at the end: best reply Larry. 😂
Thank you!
The end😂
You two are great together 😊
Thank you, Jesh!
The Federal Reserve is hoping that the prices will only go up 2 %..hence prices will always go up by at least much.
greetings from Central Alberta Canada 🌸
Hello, Canada!
I luv your channel
On watching this I am here to ask a question
Would u do a vlog about us "50-60 yr olds" who didn't save for our retirement ....is there hope 🙏 for us?
Asking for a friend 😉
Can you do a video about a plan on how to pay off a mortgage early? I think that's a great tip.
@larryware1 thank you Larry I'll check the video out as well!
Thanks
You are so welcome, Linda.
My brain thought Larry said “its like going Target shopping without a budget” 😂
LOL! Nope, but that's funny.
😂
LOL! That will work also!
Hope and Larry, i am not sure how it works in the USA, does the employer pay into the employee's retirement fund? i find it odd here, i am an Australian, by law 11% of my wage goes to a retirement fund. in a sense i have a massive saving account i cannot touch until i reach retirement age. this is not a gift from my employer but money i am in a sense forced to save. btw it is a great system once you get your head around it
That's very similar to our Social Security, only that fund does not give you enough to live on after retirement.
GREAT VIDEO!!!
I ask myself, What would Hope and Larry say?
That's so special. Thank you, Glenda!
Thank you.
I remember what my one supervisor said, "If you think can or you think you can't, you are probably correct."
@@evasanz3466 Thank you! I never knew who had originally said it, just that both my supervisor and our department head, both from the Air Force Academy, would say it.
Well said by Henry Ford.
We don’t have mint mobile in Australia
I love the bloopers! You both are so cute 🙂
Awe, thank you, Lyla!
Love the blooper!! 😂
Thank you, K. Harris.
Uhhh…have you been talking to my husband? He has said nearly ALL of these phrases!!
We've said them, too.
Clever Larry!!!
Thank you. One of the few times I was thinking on my feet. LOL!
Do you do things differently now that you have UA-cam and doing so well?
No difference, Vita. We still work very hard to save money and make it go as far as possible.
My favorite saying is, What do you want? What do you need?
I am so sick of people blaming the government or our leaders for their financial situations.
Memorable words from our across-the-street neighbor: “It’s only money.” Ouch. The Doppelgängers
Yep! So true, User.
It's the "P" word for me, they get my back hairs up when they use the word "our policy". That's when I tell them mine.
You're right. "Our Policy" is pretty inflexible.
Not having a definition of "enough", leads to depression.
👍👍👍
💖💖💖
Remember what Jerry Reed said, "When you're hot, your hot".
LOL!
When someone says only $ X:XX.
Where there's a will there's a lawsuit. So have inspiration but cover your ass legally.
So I'm still allowed to say "I'll always have student loans!" 😂 j/k
LOL!
Stinking thinking.
Not sure I understand your comment, Robert.
@@larryware1 The negativity my Grandpa used to call it Stinking Thinking
You two are so awesome
Love the “hot” comment Larry!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂❤
