I made zippered packing cubes out of rip-stop fabric like you got. They make great gifts for people who travel. The ripstop also makes great purse/bag linings because it is light, but sturdy, and it water resistant.
I typically love shopping on FWD and will still order fabric from them, but this is the reason why I don’t buy mystery boxes! The couple of times that I’ve tried it (and I really mean a couple of times!) I ended up with fabric I didn’t like and would have to give it away.😢. I love the faces that you made, 😂😂😂 and you being so very candid with us! ❤
Especially with lining, I often pick up 1 yard remnants. Sleeves often get different color or even different fabrics. I've used ripstop as a backing to denim/ scrap quilts I use for picnics or outdoor events. I use things like that brown as Inter linings as well as muslins Also, the brocade as a corset...excellent
I’m sorry about your fabric. purchased 4 yards of a poly wool for my ME2001 coat from FWD, and lost a full yard because of a hole. I contacted them right away and they immediately sent me another yard and a half of the fabric. I would definitely contact them and express my disappointment.
I like your mystery box. The fabrics make you think outside your comfort zone and pushes your creativity ! Thank you for sharing & stay positive about your purchase !
Your face cracked me up and this video was fun to watch. Bagmaker/designer here. What you call ripstop we call wpc - waterproof (water resistant) canvas. Mostly used on the inside of bags instead of cotton because you don't have to interface it. If you need to iron it, only iron the fabric side. If you iron on the smooth side, it will stick to your iron. Maybe try a simple tote pattern with red on the outside and yellow on the inside.
Raven. Don't give up. You have some pretty interesting pieces. Blazer suits with pants are really popular and I can see a couple of your pieces as suits- especially the yellow animal print and the satins. Girrrl, do your thing! ☺️
You are wonderful! I’m too picky to be brave enough to order a mystery box but I’m howling over your reaction to brown broadcloth because that is legit the only thing you got I could have used in the last six months. I appreciate your candor. ❤️
I kept yelling CHECK FOR HOLES!! after that first blue fabric! But that bright yellow and black print looked really nice with that shiny yellow that's sitting on top of it.
Do the two blue fabrics match? If so, you could make a formal length dress out of the heavier fabric and then make a short jacket or a shawl out of the shiny fabric.
Thanks x sharing your box w us. Compared to the other mystery boxes, this one is the bottom one. However, w your creativity and skills, you will make something outstanding.
The large flower print would be a fantastic dressy swimsuit coverup. The ripstop would be good backing for picnic / beach blankets. Do a cute pant in the brown!
For a quick estimate of yardage; hold one corner of the fabric in your hand and bring it up to your nose. That’s about a yard/meter. You can measure the distance yourself for more accuracy.
I loved every piece in that box and would have been thrilled to get it. Of course, we may do completely different types of projects which would make a difference in how happy we would be . So, if I order a box I might get stuff you would love and I would have no use for. Good luck to you!
Gosh, your face is just priceless! Look at it this way. I paid $64 for 2.5 yards of linen, and you got all of that for about the same price. You'll be able to use that fabric for something! I'm going to stay away from FWD's mystery boxes.
I would use the dark brown as a cover to put over stuff in the back of my car. I made black covers, so my suitcases and other stuff when traveling doesn’t show up in the windows as easily.
As an amateur bag maker, several fabrics gave off that vibe (don't wash the waxed canvas, please!). I believe the hole in the blue fabric was what they pull to test GSM (grams per square meter) to give the fabric weight. Seems based on so many fabrics being less than 2yards, these are just end of bolt pieces. I'll just keep checking my local Walmart for the offcuts they sell! Love your videos. You are such a real, precious human. ❤
Thank you so much for sharing, as usual. Even tho you’re not exactly thrilled with everything, you still came up with some really good ideas. I made a Mimi G dress that called for a knit lining called tricot. Maybe that’s what that white lining fabric is?
I’m so glad you filmed your honest reactions and disappointments because I was reacting the same way! The cuts were so short too 2m is minimum purchase these days for a blouse or shift dress. I couldn’t think of a single project I would make wth any of it tbh. Loved the jacquard too but with just over 1yd idk… !
They cut the whole to test the fabric. The rip stop and waxed canvas you can use for bagmaking. Don’t wash the waxed canvas. You will ruin it and possibly your machine.
None of the fabric except the brown fit in my wardrobe plans ( I need some coveralls but I would applique on it to jazz it up). I like the colors but I don't need poly satin). I did like the crazy print for shorts or a summer dress.
I was told when I worked in a fabric store that it is a quality control thing that happens every so often from the manufacture people. We would get them on occasion in our store as well.
The ripstop fabric is great for bags. I use it for lining bags that will have something wet in them like a swimsuit bag or cooler bag. They also make great reusable grocery bags.
Enjoyed your unboxing, I received a similarly disappointing box from same place but kept it all and in time found use for all of it and you will too. Sometimes you don’t see it right away😊 For example: I would make cargo pants and utility/bush jacket (free patterns available) from brown fabric, topstitch with gold thread and wear with blouse or cami from gold satin. Anyway your facial expressions are priceless, have fun, happy sewing!
I’m thinking the rip stop could be used as backing for a stadium blanket, it can be used on the ground, or sitting on the bleachers and if rain comes, flip it over. With all the satin like fabric, slip dresses or camis. Good call on the brown broadcloth.
I am so glad to see this. I have been tempted to do this but always chicken out. 😅The pretty blue with the hole looks like Peau de Soie, a heavier-weight matte satin.
The ripstop can be used to make bags or maybe a kite 😊. I saw a video where the vlogger got a lot of fabric at a thrift store that had holes like that one. In the comments people said that manufacturers do that to send samples to clients.
The area of fabric cut from a circle cutter is 0.01 m², so if we weigh it in grams, we calculate the fabric weight by: (weight of fabric piece in grams) x 100 = gsm

She was so mad at me, I was punished for weeks for that 'wrong' answer! I still stand by my colors, still my faves. She redid my room every few years, always HER fugly colors, no input from or asking me: pale lavender sheer curtains and paint; yellows everywhere; then golds all over; finally (after some creepy guy was caught peeking in my windows early mornings for months), I got DARK green walls, very very thick and heavy curtains that were dark green like ivy with black and wild ugly green colors, and heavy thick furniture - ick! I did learn from her though; although I did not let my children run my home, I've ALWAYS let them have opinions and input for decorating not just their rooms, but even the rest of our home - let them have voices!! Now when I'm decorating our fixing something, or making something by sewing or crochet, I nearly always ask my Darling Granddaughter Sierra, who has the keenest and most innovative eyes and opinions. If you are looking to add more fabric and with nothing in fact in mind, it’s a great box. It is a mystery box; some are great , some not so great. Mystery is getting more fabric to investigate new projects. As you increase your sewing skills you may not be so open to get whatever they send you and you may plan specific projects with specific materials.
Woman, you have just got to use those fabrics that are treated with a coating to create yourself a cute waterproof picnic set!! The red, yellow, and black would make a cute picnic table cover/blanket, with a bag you'd carry everything in! Think of a relaxing fun day at the park!!! 😊😊😊
I think that box was actually pretty good I was thinking of getting one that's how I ended up here. When it comes to fabric I'm not very picky so I think it would work out for me. Also the broadcloth could be use for pants/skirt and would look amazing with a satin top maybe like a Champaign color GiRL! And for the whole in the blue fabric, on the bright side they could have just sent you the 2 yards without the hole but they didn't cut it off and now you have a little room to play with
This is the first I have heard of buying fabrics this way. I am strict a quilter, do they have a place that sells 100%quality cotton? This could be fun
@@RavenMaureen I went to Michael's over the weekend and saw that they had easy to clean mats to put down under art stations for kids. It made me think of the rip-stop water-resistant fabric you had in your video.
I'm so sorry the bio wasn't better. I ordered one a couple yrs ago and was shocked at the variety....especially the amount of African print that was in the box. I got one from Mood...not the best...
@@RavenMaureen lol. I was thinking about this all day.lol. I thought about A cool reversible trench. Chocolate brown on one side and nice Burberry plaid on the other.
Raven … I just got a box from FWD because of your video (to try)… I ordered a 10 lb box, and OMG Was about 20 lbs, all kinds of fabric, lots of gabardine types, all colors, but NO prints … (sad face) … mine came USPS … and broken box … and I had a $10 coupon for the first order … Its one of those You NEVER know what your gonna get! But I’m seriously disappointed with MOOD … 4 BAD boxes … so thought I’d try this. Thanks!
Make your dog a raincoat. My dogs have one with a hood. Very worthwhile for those necessary walks in the rain. You don't have a dog: make raincoats for dogs of family and friends.
I would have been thrilled to get this box. A friend told me of a couple of places to try their mystery boxes. I cried with the one. It was very small, maybe 2” squares if that. All different kinds of fabric. It looked more like a box of scraps. I said I would use it for stuffing bears I’m making. The second box I got was a little better but again I was so disappointed. What whole pieces that was in the box had tape, glue, or markings on them. I said then I would never try anymore mystery boxes. I loved that color lavender and blue ones. They are so pretty but everyone has their own opinion
Your reaction is precisely why I don't buy mystery bags or boces. I don't have a lot of cash, so if I am going to buy something, I prefer to know what I am getting. The brown broadcloth, I would use for pants or a skirt. I don't sew with 'fancy' fabrics. I am mostly a quilter so most of the thing I would never use. This was interesting however. I would have liked to see the backside of the jaquard.
I really like the brown. I could see the MimiG pants with the buttons! And a top from the zebra print to pair with them! Other than that I'm gonna pass or ordering.
Look up burn testing fabric to help with fabric content. Ripstop is nor totally waterproof but water repellent. Don’t think I would ever buy a mystery box since I never use polyester fabric because it doesn’t breathe and burns me up use odd fabrics for bags and storage units. A good drawstring for hoods are longer shoelaces and they come in so many fun colors plus they are cheap.
Hi. Couldn't you combine the red and yellow rip-stop to make a wind breaker? The blue with the hole is so pretty, maybe you have enough to make a blouse or skirt. Thank you for doing this. You saved me $60. I will not be purchasing those mystery boxes. Think I will keep with FabricMartFabrics. Like you said very hit and miss. I am not a great sewist and would not even know what to do with the fabric LOL. Have a nice day everyone.
The rip stops are two different weights. So idk if combining them would be ideal. Someone mentioned stadium blanket backings, dog rain coats and also reusable grocery bags
They could have cut off the part with the hole and given you a smaller piece, but by including it you get a little bit of very usable fabric - just not yardage.
OMG...that box..lol. Personally I would have like a better variety and some longer cuts. They could have thrown in some nice in season fabric like a french terry, cotton eyelet, challis ....I digress. However, the ripstop could be used for croasbody bags or bucket hats? As for that brown, definetely muslin, but they could be cute cargo pants , a musim for M8358 since it takes so much fabric, OR you can manipulate it into a textured fabric or embroider it. I have yet to order any mystery box cause I buy fabric faster than it's sewn, but it's exciting not knowing what you'll get.😊😊
@@RavenMaureen I love your name, There are so few Maureen's that it seems oddly special to connect to another Maureen! lol I was teased as kid for my name...and my red hair and I now love the uniqueness...is that a word? anywho dye that fabric
I would only ever buy a fabric mystery box of 100% cotton [good quality/designer] quilting fabric. Because even if it’s “ugly”, if you cut it down small enough, you can successfully use it in a scrap quilt with other pretty fabrics. It’s all about the colour when it comes to scrap quilts. So when ordering if you could specify a colour grouping (pastels, or rainbow 🌈 brights, or autumn colours, or “neutrals”), even better.
I made zippered packing cubes out of rip-stop fabric like you got. They make great gifts for people who travel. The ripstop also makes great purse/bag linings because it is light, but sturdy, and it water resistant.

Can you use the brown for a peasant dress to go with your corset.
Rip stop, rain coat/cape for little ones. You can check if you have a local foster closet in your area. Back packs, tote bags,

That brown would be perfect for totes, quilt backing, jackets, backpacks, bags for wheelchairs/walkers, zippered cases to protect musical equipment.

Right?! I'm not happy about it at all.
That brocade would make a kick ass nontraditional wedding dress.
That brocade is fire for the corset you are planning. Love it
Nice pantsuit for the brocade. Wish we could attach pics.
I think so too! @cookeka
Unfortunately, there's not enough of the brocade for a pants suit.
The hole is from where they take a standard circle of fabric to get the GSM(gams per square meter) there is a special device that cuts the hole.
Blue could also make a formalwear top.
That brown could be great for muslins. I enjoyed this! Thanks Raven.

They could have cut off the part with the hole and given you a smaller piece, but by including it you get a little bit of very usable fabric - just not yardage.
I agree - they could've cut it off.
Ripstop is great for toddler overalls.
great idea
Rip stop is good for bag lining
Great idea!
I have yet to order any mystery box cause I buy fabric faster than it's sewn, but it's exciting not knowing what you'll get.😊😊
Rip stop great for outdoor enthusiasts' gear bags
Great idea!
I actually love this box and wish you could have had a better experience
Your reactions have me weak!!!! 😂😂
Organza is stiffer, that off white is voile and the satin could go underneath it
The brown fabric could be dyed black or you could do a rich chocolate brown
Dyeing and removing color have all crossed my mind 🤣
@@RavenMaureen I love your name, There are so few Maureen's that it seems oddly special to connect to another Maureen! lol
I was teased as kid for my name...and my red hair and I now love the uniqueness...is that a word? anywho dye that fabric
I like brown, but broadcloth? Ugh. Only thing I can think of is making tote bags that look like chocolate bars! Happy sewing!
Right - if it was linen or even a twill... or just something other than broadcloth.
OMG! Is that hole in the middle of the fabric? Can it be worked around?
It would figure that the brown fabric you hate is the one you get the most of. That box had way too much shiny silky stuff for me.
Brocade is the only gem! 🥰 The rest meh! ☹
Agreed!
Can't say I'll be giving them a try!
Can you ask this company for strictly a certain "kind" of fabric, or do you just get what you get? I would only want cotton fabric for quilting.
Unfortunately you cannot 😩
@@RavenMaureen Good to know. But I think you are an awesome seamstress.
Dis I miss the cost?
Lol, I was looking at their site thinking about trying the mystery box. Too much satin fabric for me!
I agree, it was not a lot of variety.
Rip Stop for totes and bags for travel
I see so many possibilities. Just too many solids😮
