I have to brag. My Phalaenopsis Dancing Butterfly/Kumquat has 4, yes 4, primary flower spikes. I'm so happy. I bought her about 2 years ago when she only had 4 leaves but today she has 12 leaves. She is a big girl! Thanks for letting me bloviate. :D
I bought a blooming orchid about five months ago but it lost its flowers a month later. I didn't expect it to produce spikes till this next coming winter but to my surprise and joy it now spiking again. I can hardly wait.
I have 6 phalaenopsis orchids now and they flower all year round and get about 2 lots of flowers out of my orchids . I grow mine on my window ledge (in the uk) and water then about every 2 weeks and there doing amazing been grown them for about 2-3 years now
Thanks to watching you for a few years in hopes to rescue my grandma's orchids I just had a first success reblooming a phalaenopsis AND A NELLY ISLER! Which I didn't expect at all to happen! My grandma's orchids are still growing roots though and my dendrobium is barely alive 😅
Thank you. That was very helpful. I have not been able to get a re-bloom, until this year’s new spike, on any of my plants. I gave away a plant, which stubbornly wouldn’t re-bloom, to a friend who sleeps with her window partially opened at night letting in cool mountain air and she has had two blooming seasons. I get a photo from her each year. It’s a dry desert where I am making conditions challenging. Sometimes less than 5% humidity indoors. I mist every day even keeping water in the leaf grooves since evaporation here is crazy. Can’t wait to see my first re-bloom - since I used your cool down tip from one of your videos last year 🤞
@@leila1a298 Our garage got down into the 50s overnight so I would put the plants out there and bring them back into the light during the day. I got 4 re-blooms from the smaller plant and two from the larger one. Success is sweet. The large plants blooms are still on the plant after 2+ months but the smaller plant dropped all great blooms in 2 days last week. Don’t know what I did to cause that. Maybe overwatering. It’s getting hot here now and I need to mist more often even tho the inside temp is 83 degrees F.
i just both my orchid and i already watch all the video because im a crazy person before anything bad happens to my orchid , and vuola!!! I feel like im a orchid expert already!!! THANK YOU!
I didn't know all this information about temperature affects on orchids! My orchid has been stagnant for about 2 years and after watching your video about repotting, I decided to repot it in December. In my country, most new plantings and repotting- even moving trees- occurs during our winter months from December to March. This is the time when plants grow a lot, since our Winters' average temperature is between 17 to 27 degrees celsius. So I followed the same rule. My orchid is finally showing new growth, which has made me very happy. Also, I sleep with the window just barely open, for some fresh air, since we use air-conditioning during the rest of the 9 months of the year at about 23 degrees celsius. 😄 I wonder what this will mean for my orchid. Just need to wait and see.
I feel a bit lucky...1 of my phals likes to bloom in the summer & again in winter🤗.We keep the 🏡 like a igloo in the summer with the A/C so it tends to spike.I feed my phals with repotme fertilizer & care for them well so I guess they really appreciate it a lot. That slow-release fertilizer is wonderful😊💚.
I had a white orchid that grew to be huge and produced so many spikes that branched, it looked like a medium sized shrub. I later learned that orchids can actually be bred to bloom so much, they can actually bloom themselves to death. I think this might be why, after blooming, this orchid went into a steep decline. (It may have been another reason because I didn’t know about stem and crown rot then.) Fortunately, it did produce multiple keikis and I managed to save 3 of them. They all have spikes now. I’m wondering, if they seem to produce a ridiculous number of spikes, if I need to cut one of them back to prevent the orchid from totally depleting itself of energy.
A really important thing to remember is to use a good quality fertilizer...Any phalaenopsis will become depleted if it's not fed well.Repotme sells a excellent slow-release fertilizer that only needs to be added every few months to the pot. Most orchids can produce 1-4 spikes at once depending on the care & genetics...Some varieties are more prone to multiple spikes than others. Those lovely flowers take a lot of energy so you have to feed & care for your orchids well.Try keeping your orchids all fertilized properly, watered properly,etc...Then whenever they decide to spike you could try trimming a few spikes off of 2 of them & then allow the 3rd one to fully bloom & 👀 what happens.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply! I wasn't using fertilizer at that time but now fertilize with MSU from Repotme. I plan to order the time release fertilizer in my next order. I think the potting mixes I've gotten from them have made a big difference, too.
Long time viewer. First time commenter. With your help I have 6-7 orchids that rebloom every year for 5+ years. Thanks for including images of orchids with their names in this video! Please continue and consider letting us know where we can buy them by name. I have never seen several of the orchids you showed in this video. I have always wanted an orange phalaenopsis but never knew names and didn't know how to find online stores to buy them. Perhaps you have a video that addresses the name and where to buy question? Thanks again for your channel.
I have one I didn't cut the whole spike off. Not to try to get it to bloom again, but I just cut the flowers off and happened to leave a stick behind. It didn't do a thing until the chill and everyone started sending up new spikes.
I do not know the type of orchid I have but, I came across one my wife had. It was by the basement rear door and looked dead and dried out. The roots had a small hint if life. That was Oct 2021 , I revived it and it took many months to even look like it was going to live. I put it in a north facing window in the kitchen and it had finally sent out a flower stock!
I had a fairly big orchid collection (probably 10 orchids) but my room got to like 50° and I only had 2 orchids live🥲 one was making a flower spike but it hasn’t grown since
Do you have a video on how to mount & grow orchids on a piece of wood. I bought a gorgeous piece of hardwood from Hawaii and would love to put my little Phalaenopsis on it. I’m very new to orchids but doing well with my first, I’ve had for about two years
I have one in a Southeast window and it blooms constantly. Once one set of flowers die another off shoot blooms. I think my light and temperature is just right. I don't actually do anything but water it.
Now I know exactly where to put mine! I'm in Canada and we all have radiators underneath windows... But in my living room it doesn't start that much since I have an other source in the diner room who is enough for all the house! And since this window is North-west I think it will be the best for my 2 orchids! One I have since last year and she didn't bloom this winter, but she have only 3 and a half leaves (the 4th is half size of the others) and I didn't cut the spikes before super late... I still have 1 because I did an experiment with one... I saw a short showing we can proliferate orchids using the flower spike? It didn't work 😅 This can be a nice video? How to proliferate orchids?
I placed two orchids in a cool room each night for one month. One produced a spike. The other nothing. Should I try the cool down again at night with the orchid that did not spike? Both orchids are in perfect shape with lots of leaves and heathy roots and they sit next to each other on the table.
I’m so worried about my orchid I’m afraid it’s going to die before I get the mix to repot it bc it smells so bad n I can’t water it bc it still moist rn pls help me out thanks Rose Stines
Have old yucky broken down bark or sphagnum moss?Assuming you've got a phalaenopsis orchid...Best thing to do is actually immediately remove your orchid from the decomposed potting media & keep it bare-root.You'll need to soak it's roots at least once per day to keep it hydrated.Old broken down bark &/or moss is a silent phalaenopsis killer...It becomes too acidic & prevents the root system from getting adequate oxygen.Luckily phalaenopsis are epiphytes meaning that they just naturally grow clinging off of tree branches so as long as you just keep it hydrated it'll be OK until you can re-pot it.Helpful hint:Try using "hydroton" potting media,it's little clay balls that never decompose...You'll likely want to use this particular type of potting media in a semi-hydro setup where you use a inner pot, outer pot,& a strip of fabric that acts as a wick to bring moisture up into the inner pot for the phalaenopsis...Danny has made videos on how to do semi-hydro with hydroton👍🏻.Also remember to use fertilizer after you re-pot it,I highly recommend the slow-release orchid fertilizer from Repotme since it won't 🔥 your roots & it only needs to be applied once every few months.Good luck.
I got a phal I have had for years that started putting up a spike a few weeks ago. I have another phal I got a little under a year ago that came with a flower spike. The new phal hasn’t put up a spike this year and I have no idea if that is because I didn’t trigger it to flower/something is wrong, or it just isn’t used to being in a new environment with new stimuli
What is more important for telling a Phal it it’s winter? The change in temperature? Or the absolute temperature? I live in Houston, Tx. It will never be 64 degrees-F for more than a few days. I could keep it outside in the shade - it gets over 100F in the shade, and 75F inside with air conditioning.
I find my Pitcher plants do a great job on keeping fungus gnats down to virtually nothing, along with my Pinguiculas. So both go very well with orchids!
I have listened to a lot of your videos. I have about 60 orchids of all types in a open air porch that gets good light. I water once a week and fertilize them ones a month. I live in South Florida. Am not sure what am doing wrong. I inherited them over 2 years ago. None of them have bloomed.
Hello Danny! I have a Phalaenopsis, a hybrid prune to multiple spikes and blooms. Is started to grow even secondary spikes, but they dried out (not before the buds driyng out). Now I have just one primary spyke, but the buds continue to dry (when reaching the size of an apple seed), and the spike continue to grow. I don't overwater it. I spray sometimes the aerial roots (that are drying slowly also). I have no idea what is wrong.
I've had two orchids for well over ten years and I've never seen a flower stalk. They've been healthy and happily growing roots and leaves but never flowers
Hi, I’ve had this problem with several orchids myself. I moved my orchids from my bathrooom, which was quite warm but was under a skylight. Note 1 other orchid bloomed there but flowers were 3-4 on 1 spike. I put it in an east facing window. This orchid was extremely old. 10 years at least only rebloomed 1x for me. I made my water schedule regular. I cut down the stem as it was overgrown from being so old. I carefully made sure to leave roots. I used sone extra lava rock( it’s potted it lava) in a bigger container. Added sone water making sure not to reach the actual potted orchid. And I placed the potted orchid in that. So it’s getting humidity and more light. It’s now put up a spike after a couple months in its new location and about 3 -4 weeks after its major surgery. So look at watering conditions, lighting and humidity. I thought the bathroom was perfect. Now I c things differently. Good luck
Hello everyone! I wonder if someone can answer my question. My phals is in a period of growing leaves and roots right now. Should I wait with re-potting? The leaves look healthy and green and I've had some explosions of air roots. The pot roots looks healthy. No spikes yet since the last cut. Thanks! :)
What do you recommend for a colder spot? Wait until is cold outside and take them out at night or for a month but make sure no frost? Or in a room with the AC on the whole time? What are others doing? I don’t have a basement or garage. Thanks
I have been waiting for a rebloom for 3 years, I changed the medium multiple times (due to fungus), fertilize, have artificial lighting on during winter, my apartment gets quite cold in the winter... My orchid has grown 5 beautiful, large new leaves but no flowers. I'm on the verge of giving up
So I am concerned. I absolutely love orchids and I’ve learned a LOT from watching your videos. However there is a few things, I have an ornery cat, it is mid April and I’ve never owned an orchid. I plan on buying one very soon. I would like to keep it in my bedroom (away from my cat) it will be in bright light (not direct sunlight) but I do like my house to be at a cooler temperature (around 69 F) in the summer. It will get pretty cool in my room. How will my orchid react to that constant cool temperature? Is that too much ? Should it be warmer ? Unfortunately my AC floor vent is right next to the window. (My orchid will not be right beside the vent) but it won’t be far from it either as it needs light. Anywhere else in my house wouldn’t be a good idea because of my cat :( . Will it be okay in my bedroom at a constant cool temperature throughout the summer ? Any feedback from anyone is appreciated!! 💜 I am learning and need all the info I can get ~Thank You!
Sorry did not get question phrased properly, once an orchid blooms and drops all the old flowers, should I cut old flower spikes. And how far should I cut them back.
I don’t cut the spike unless it’s completely dead. The majority of the times it branches (not immediately) and continues flowering from the same spike. I have several mini phalaenopsis that have branched and at the same time have produced another spike. So, as long as it’s still green, don’t cut it and wait to be surprised.
My flower spike was broken off, will the plant produce any other flower spikes this year? I live in Canada and this orchid produces 2 spikes every year. Thank you for your videos, they have been very helpful. 💖
I bought a teacup orchid and it has two flower spikes with beautiful flowers.. does this mean it will always have two spikes or was this forced at the nursery ?
My phalaenopsis is 52 months old and has never bloomed since the original flowers died. I have put it outside in the Spring and Fall and it has constantly grown new leaves and roots and is very healthy but it will not grow flower spikes. Just after the original flowers died I transplanted it to Hydroton. Could that be the problem?
Hi Danni I have a phal that I bought in August now I have new root tips everywhere I have something coming between the 2 lowest leaves so I'm not sure if thats going to be a aerial root or flower spike...how can I tell?
I’ve had my orchid for about 1.5 years. It’s never produced another stem/spike after I cut the original when the flowers died. It grew one leaf, which has since died. It doesn’t really do much 🥲
Same with mine, until I changed it out of the pot I bought it in from the supermarket. I also changed the medium it was planted in. I found a lot of dead and rotting roots that I removed, after learning how to repot from one of Danny's videos. I was surprised to find new leaves growing out, recently. It has been 1 month since repotting, and I am very excited 😊
@@daviduberhaus5336 🤔 since I live in a very warm climate, we use the a.c. a lot. I realized that it was probably making the air really dry and I believe that orchids need a bit of humidity. I changed the pot to a bowl, and used the stick medium- what's it called?- Miraclegro Orchid potting mix Coarse blend. The idea was to increase the humidity around the orchid, without keeping it's roots constantly in water. Currently, it feels like it is barely holding itself in place 😅 I hope my experiment works and it grows more roots to anchor itself better. The new leaves are making me optimistic.
It would be really good if “rePot me “ gave us a Viewers Discount for watching your videos , & making purchases & also offered free shipping on all orders. Just a thought.☺️
I accidentally cut a primary spike that was developing on one of my first orchids... It hasn't bloomed since but it has had plenty of healthy foliage and root growth... How do I convince it to trust me again and produce another primary spike?? 🥲

Hi, it's Phal. schilleriana 😊
Thanks for the informative video. How are your vandas? Seems like you don’t talk too much about them lately. Are they adapting well to Cyprus?
My orchid is over a year old and has never stopped flowering all l do is soak it on a Saturday morning never have done anything else .
Once your orchids bloom do you cut the flower main flower spikes all the way back to the bottom of the plant
Danni help! My baby schilleriana I received last year has just lost its only two leaves.. Will it produce more if roots ok?
Hi Danni I have a phal that I bought in August now I have new root tips everywhere I have something coming between the 2 lowest leaves so I'm not sure if thats going to be a aerial root or flower spike...how can I tell?

When do phalaenopsis orchids lose flowers
I don’t know what the Celsius is I’m used to the other temperature degrees so sorry about that
I’ve had my orchid for about 1.5 years.
@@sharifaa.8887 I did repot mine as well since it was a grocery store plant too. I should probably change the medium again that might help
@@daviduberhaus5336 best of luck to you
I have the same problem. I learned to cut that stem back when the flowers died and that was 4 yrs ago. No flowers. No new stem. Just green leaves
It would be really good if “rePot me “ gave us a Viewers Discount for watching your videos , & making purchases & also offered free shipping on all orders.
Just a thought.☺️
Hi, try 'missodchidgirl' at checkout, I think it gives a discount still 😊
@@MissOrchidGirl you misspelled the discount code😉
I accidentally cut a primary spike that was developing on one of my first orchids... It hasn't bloomed since but it has had plenty of healthy foliage and root growth... How do I convince it to trust me again and produce another primary spike?? 🥲
