This was an absolutely fantastic program. It was informative but it wasn’t too dense. It let the people tell their stories (and those of the families they study and care for in the cases of the curators and caretakers) and so many of these people were wonderful and had such engaging personalities. I enjoyed this a lot. Thank you

When you are a duke or any other sort of hereditary peer you don't need to be anything else. It's the jumped up life peers who are the arrogant ones
You are right the House of Lords Act of 1999 put a bunch of snobs with no connection to history and culture in control of the House of Lords. Tony Blair basically did, what the devils in Washington DC did in 1913 with the ratifying of the 17th Amendment to the US Constitution, that is to remove real checks and balances from the process of legislation and ensure the continuation of frivolous spending.

Lady Camilla is such a sweet, lovely lady, it bothers me that she was treated so badly throughout her childhood and youth.

I agree with you. As an American, I like learning about both British and American history.
Yes I as a norwegian is quite envyus of britian in that way, our aristocratic families were abolished in the early 1900s, we still have the royal family but no dukes or the like. Though some norwegians are aristocrats in other countries, mainly sweden.
Deus Vult but also by loosening their hold on power when necessary, and eventually becoming almost powerless, they prevented any of the revolutions of the type that happened in other countries.

in the section of Determined Duchess...Her Grace the Duchess of Rutland is not snobby at all, but rather intent on keeping history alive willingly putting things straight again after so many years of what i see as "neglect" of taking care of things properly, if this makes sense. At the end of the stories, it was sad to see some of the lines of aristocracy just simply come to an end due to no male heirs :(
As I understand it, inheritance of such titles is based on the original grant of the title which usually specifies that the title is to be passed to male heirs. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a nice idea if a law was passed superseding such clauses granting a title that is about to go extinct to the closest female relative of the most recent duke. They do that with the monarchy so why not with a dukedom? I think it is a shame when one goes extinct.

Winston Churchill was a close relative of the ducal family, I believe he was briefly heir apparent. No idea about Diana but the Spencers are a prominent aristocratic family, one of whose members married into the Churchill family in the 19th Century (hence the hyphen), so it could be an extremely distant relation

I found this documentary very interesting as family lines or trees can end. I do think people that inherit these titles should carry them humbly with pride. The Lady's that end up as a daughter of a duke, without brothers, should just be as proud and pass it on to their daughters. Finally, the Lady's were a pretty important part in this as two men cannot produce a boy! hehe... sorry had to add that!

It's not that they aren't being created. The newest one was for Prince Edward , Duke of Edinburgh and before that the Dukedoms of Sussex and Cambridge and York and Kent and Gloucester only Sussex Kent Gloucester will become non royal dukedoms
It's also that no one is seen as being deserving of being offered one the last person offered was Sir Winston Churchill. Also if anyone cares there are about 3 Dukedoms that could be reinstated the Duke of Berwick who is a Spanish Grandee in Spain and two Germans former Princes of the German Empire the Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and the Dukedom of Albany

The laws of succession have changed since Prince George was born, and as far as the Monarchy is concerned, the firstborn child - whether girl or boy - inherits the title. Princess Margaret (Prince Charles' sister) was firstborn, but because the old laws of succession were based on primogeniture, her younger brother, Charles, superseded her, and he will be King. Then crown will then go to Will, and presumably then to George. However, if something happens to George before reaching adulthood, because of the new law, the crown will go to Charlotte, NOT her younger brother Louis.

And best check the years, Prince Charles is the first born, following by Anne, followed by Andrew, and lastly Edward.

My grandmother always used to say our family has a castle in Scotland. Her father was David Murray. Pity we know so little about his life before he moved to South Africa.

This explains how we came to America. the first son inherited everything. The rest of us took a boat to the new world. I can trace my line through my grandmothers , our family is good sized, according to genelogy I have about 185,000,000 cousins from King James V of Scots.

The ancestor was hung, that is to say suspended, for three hours on a gibbet then cut down and dismembered and his limbs were hung on the gates of the main cities of Scotland. That is different from saying the man was taken out and hanged by the neck until dead, as the usual sentence went. He said what he meant to say. His ancestor's body was used to strike fear in the heart of anyone who might do what he did.

I genuinely believe that the public should have a say in electing new hereditary Dukes, Earls, Barons. People who have served our country (male or female). It would be like Alan Sugar in the house of Lords where they have done good and are experienced enough to help our country. Hereditary titles aren't all bad. They create interest and history as well as instilling responsibility in future generations to help our country.
