You are such an excellent teacher. I love your show-and-tell style of videos. I have been gardening for over 50 years and still learn something new from every one of your videos. Great job!
I snagged some clearance drop in planters from Lowe’s at 50% off. Some were good enough to just drop in, but the ones that weren’t , I did exactly this. I popped it out and divided them and mixed them in my own recipes. The roots were not that deep and they are now thriving . I have learned a lot from your videos, I am trying to be better at container gardening. With your tips I hope this year I will do better. I’m happy i found your channel.
Thank you so much for your comment. Buying those containers can be a great way up get a lot of plants and spend less… especially early in the season when the plants are still young. Good luck!
You’ve inspired me to start adding flowers to my gardens. I’ve been focused on only planting vegetables but have now begun adding flower pots everywhere there are vegetables!
Corey, I just discovered your channel very recently and am really happy to subscribe for all videos. You do an exceptional job of explaining and demonstrating, which is helpful. And I need all the advice you can offer. I'm in the gardening zone 5b in Wisconsin. Thanks so much!
Corey for the first time in all my 74 years, I have a dream garden on my terrace. I live in Cuenca, Ecuador, which has the perfect climate for growing nearly everything. Thanks to the great environment here and your tutelage, my containers and hanging baskets are nothing short of amazing!!! Thank you for all the great instructions.
21:12 this was very informative and easy to comprehend. Thank you. I’ve always liked to pot up small starter plants in my 10-12 inch baskets and watch them grow. Because the gorgeous oversized hanging baskets available are expensive and I’ve never had much success growing them on. You explained why they are so difficult to keep alive, when over-planted, and I wasn’t able to water them 2-3 times a day.
Thanks for all your highly interesting videos! I garden way down in zone 9b and learn lots of useful information from you all the time. Looking forward to seeing some progress videos in the near future!
I appreciate your guidance so much. These plants are so expensive, I used your advice, went to my nursery and made my own basket and potted up one from big box store.
This is such an informative video. I do this all the time with sun patience. The color I want is never sold individually so I purchased the hanging basket with three plants inside. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you so much for your videos - I’ve been learning so much! I would be concerned about putting those two plants in the 14 inch container because outdoors we can’t control how much rain our pots get. And the lack of roots on those two plants along with soggy soil seems like a recipe for disaster.
When I’m putting pots outside, I try to keep an eye on the weather for the first two weeks. After that they seem to manage to recover pretty quickly from most of what Mother Nature throws at them.
Wow! Great info. Now I know why my purchased hanging baskets didn't last into July. It makes total sense after you explained it. How many zonal geraniums should you have in a 12" hanging basket? Most ready made baskets that I have seen in my area usually have 3 geraniums and a couple of other filler plants. Just came across your channel recently. Really enjoy your videos.
Corey i have learned a great deal on how to manage my small greenhouse from you. What no talks about is pest management in greenhouses. You can not have a greenhouse and not have pests. I would LOVE a video on that. Or some direction. How do u manage???
We’re trying to change over to beneficial insects, but I’ve got to get my head around it before I jump into that conversation publicly. Otherwise we try to use minimal pesticides. Neem Oil and Marathon and BioAdvanced 3-in-1 have been what we use when absolutely necessary. One of the advantages of being farther north is that the nastiest bugs tend to hit places farther south first (and some don’t get to us at all… yet), so when we’re lucky we have a bit of warning and can focus on preventative control.
I usually start right when I get home. If you’re getting them from a nursery, you can ask. If they’re from a box store, they probably haven’t gotten food since they left the grower.
Either works. Sometimes the fiber pots can dry out faster. I prefer plastic for upright plants because I don’t always like seeing the fiber pot (good trailing plants will hide the pot).
Not sure what "stick fertilizer" is. Are they plant spikes? I haven't used them - I'd guess they would be like using a granular, time-release -- if so, I'd still water with a water-soluble at least every other week (or wait and use water-soluble as needed).
That’s a bummer. I understand what they mean… since we planted ours March 1st, we’ve trimmed them twice and have to keep them spaced… so that adds labor and uses more bench space- we think it’s worth it, but I understand why one might have to weigh their options.
I was actually googling if I could divide annuals in pots! I am getting two Proven Winners Superbell calibrachoa and Snowstorm suteras for two 12in pots. Do you think I'd be able to take the quart sized flowers, cut them in half, and plant them alternating colors to better split the colors? Or do I even need to do that and they naturally will mix together throughout the pot if I plant them closely in the center of the pot? Hopefully 2 plants in a 12in isn't too many!
You won’t be able to divide individual plants… just a combination containers that is made up of several plants… so DO NOT try cutting either of the plants in the 4" size you mentioned in half - those kinds aren’t propagated that way. One Superbells and one Sutera will take a long time to fill a 12”. They’re not as vigorous as a Supertunia Vista or Superbena. I’d go with two of each in a 12”.
Watching this before bed but now I'm curious... will check tomorrow how many calibrachoas are in each hanging basket I purchased from the big box store. Each basket has medium pink, dark pink, and purple. When I purchased them two weeks ago, all three colors were equally distributed. But now, the purple has almost completely taken over.
Sometimes one color will have a growth spurt or blooming spurt - usually the others catch up, but on occasion there’s a plant that gets sluggish. It can be interesting to see how they change over the season.
@@UpNorthGardenMI I checked my hanging baskets and am happy to report 3 calibrachoa per 10" basket..... and they weren't crammed in the center, nor were they pushed to the far edge. 😄 Thank you for the advice.
Thanks Corey! Question, I always cut existing blooms ( except for petunias) off my transplants as I was told that helped with root development. Is that a myth and all this time the sacrifice has been unnecessary?👏🇨🇦👏
I love your videos I live in Iowa, my question is if I understood what you said, put the granule fertilizer in once a month, but still use like miracle grow once a week, is that correct?
Hey Corey my family had bought a lot of flowers and put them in our greenhouse but were in canada and it dropped below 2 celcius and the dahlia got a light frosting. So we put them in our basement where theres not much sun and they havent been needing much water and its been kinda worrying me even though I always check them with my finger. Is this normal? PS love your channel
@@UpNorthGardenMI Ill see what we can do it just hard cause its still drops to like 3-6 Celsius at night. Petunias can probably do fine but others probably not we also didnt do ourselves any favours and planted them already lol
Those Home Depot pots will be dead in a week. Most people don't know you have to replant them in substantially better soil. Water runs straight through those.
Corey, I can't emphasize enough how much I've learned from you. You do an exceptional job at explaining things. You're my #1 plants video.
You are such an excellent teacher. I love your show-and-tell style of videos. I have been gardening for over 50 years and still learn something new from every one of your videos. Great job!
I could watch you all day, Corey. Love how you tell us so much info as you plant. If it doesn’t work for us, it sure isn’t your fault.
Corey, seeing a garden center spokesperson who doesn't overplant a container is refreshing. Thank you for your honest and insightful reflections.

There are always things that can go wrong, but the deck is stacked against you with some containers.
I’m happy to found your videos! You are the most helpful. Please keep them coming. Thank you!
Interesting. I have no place to hang plants so, if I repotted baskets, it would be into bigger, tall pots. Very useful information...thank you!

Depending on the variety we use two or three. Our go-to variety is Calliope which is an interspecific.

So much information. ❤
Thank you.
Great information!
Very helpful thankyou
Hello Corey! Love your videos! I'm wondering what pairs well with geraniums. They're becoming a favorite of mine.
I like them with bacopa, lobelia, calibrachoa, or vines. I’m trying them with Plectranthus this year.
Super video! You’re a great help! What potting soil do you use? Lovely MothersDay wishes!
We have a mix we’re buy in bulk, so I don’t have a favorite brand name.
Great vid!🌱🌸
Great video!
How soon should fertilizer be added after purchasing flowers? Also, do you have a video on plants to containers ratio per size of container?
I usually start right when I get home. If you’re getting them from a nursery, you can ask. If they’re from a box store, they probably haven’t gotten food since they left the grower.
Corey: Plastic Hanging Baskets vs Metal Hanging Baskets with Coconut Fiber Liner - is one better than the other for personal home use?
Either works. Sometimes the fiber pots can dry out faster. I prefer plastic for upright plants because I don’t always like seeing the fiber pot (good trailing plants will hide the pot).
Corey also can I fertilize the petunias or other flowers with the stick fertilizer?

My nursery said they no longer sell superbenias as they grow too large for small pots. I planned to put just one in a container.
That’s a bummer. I understand what they mean… since we planted ours March 1st, we’ve trimmed them twice and have to keep them spaced… so that adds labor and uses more bench space- we think it’s worth it, but I understand why one might have to weigh their options.
Hi, Corey. What size pot do you recommend for a wave petunia.?
I put 2 to 4 in a 12" pot.

One hundred percent true. However, not entirely necessary for success.

That’s what I do. I usually go 30-45 days between time-release applications.
So helpful!!

I'd say you're going to want to get them back in the sunlight. They're going to need that to push out new growth.

The soil in that Wave basket I planted was horrendous. I feel like I performed a life saving procedure on those plants 😀
