Who can drive over Wolf Creek Pass and not sing the chorus of C.W. McCall’s famous 1975 spoken-word country tune of the same name? He describes the pass as “37 miles o’ hell - which is up on the Great Divide.” The song describes an out-of-control truck hauling chickens (cluckers) as it hurtles down from the pass summit to crash into the side of a feed store in downtown Pagosa Springs. Ride along with me on my drive from South Fork, Colorado to Pagosa Springs, Colorado on Highway 160 through the San Juan Mountains. I stopped at the pass summit and several lookouts as well as at Treasure Falls.
Wolf Creek Pass (summit 10,856 feet) used to be a two-lane road but was expanded into a multi-lane highway, greatly expanding the amount of traffic traversing it and making winter travel more manageable. The pass is the easiest access to southwest Colorado from the rest of the state; all remaining overland routes require lengthy detours.
The pass was named for Wolf Creek, which starts near the top of the pass and flows down its western side to meet the West Fork San Juan River in Mineral County.
