This same lineup recorded Herbie Hancock's 1979 studio album, 'Directstep,' which was released by SONY as analog "Direct Disk" in Japan only. In 1983, 'Directstep' would become one of the earliest compact discs ever released.
I was there at Chelsea College in 1979. I remember all the BBC trucks and cables running from the street into where they were performing. I don't recall much about the concert.
So was my Mum! Just said to her that I had tickets to see Herbie this year, and she said "oh yeah, I've seen him... Had no idea who he was, but the BBC were there to record it..."
I was a mths student at Chelsea, I couldn't believe he was playing. Great concert. It was packed out with people who didn't know who he is, they just wanted to get on TV. I got down the front and took some great photos.
it must have been hot in that room, everything is going out of tune. Herbies minimoog/vocoder, Paul's bass, the EWI, nightmare! But still a great gig and great to see this particular band. Must have blown a few quid with this many people on board and about 10 trucks to carry it all! haha
えー、弁当いかがっすか~? ってなキーボードだね。 ボコーダーも見事に使いこなしてる。やっぱハービーは天才だ。 この映像を見て痛感する次第。 Hang Up Your Hangups、You Bet Your Love、Honey From The Jar、そしてI Thougt It Was You。 すべてが名演。すばらしい。ただ、フェードアウトがちょと残念。
@@nige3801 yeah, i also had contact with him for years until he went severly ill. I first met him and his band (Byron Miller and an unknown young guitarist) in 1983 or so, in munich, as the sound guy in that club he played in. He played on my DW drum (Vintage Keller Shells) set for one night, and nearly destroyed it... Later i also bought a SONOR SIgnature set, just to be ready for him to play on a real loud and heavy drum set ;-)
I’m thankful to whoever decided to mix the hand percussion right up front - it’s so often inaudible. Shame the broadcast cuts him off at the end. Lot of fun in there, though.
the groove with Alphonse was way different than what Paul laid down with Michael Clark or James Levi, as PJ is leaving fewer holes, compared to the way he did with WahWah in the mix

This is an extended Headhunters Formation.
I can tell my uncle Wah Wah Watson not on stage! He played on the recording!! RIP Melvin Ragin aka Wah Wah Watson!!!!!!!!
I never knew anything about this lineup. Never knew that Mouzon played with Hancock. Great document.
I saw this lineup at the Roxy, only with Richard Tee on organ and Blackbyrd Mcknight on guitar.
10:35 George Duke did this exact same thing on the Brazilian Love Affair album, this was after Herbie
R. I.P Paul jackson 😔🙏
Alphonse Mouson and Paul Jackson drums and bass ... cosmic as all the other guys , killer grooves . Herbie changed Jazz

At 8:10 the guitar plays a James Brown's guitar riff, from the tune It's A New Day.

I was there too, 1st year Biochemistry student and in the first row, by special invitation of Alfonse.

Hang Up Your Hangups、You Bet Your Love、Honey From The Jar、そしてI Thougt It Was You。
すべてが名演。すばらしい。ただ、フェードアウトがちょと残念。
33:10 Herbie thanks the vocoder for allowing him to sing!
Live version of "Hang Up your Hang-Ups"! :D
Damn that bass line gets so unexpectedly funky towards the center of this performance.
Alphonse Mouzon at his best... he got a lot fatter and more commercial in the 80s. But, great extreme powerful drummer. RIP old buddy.
He was very active on you tube, and very friendly, lovely guy and excellent musician

Lot of fun in there, though.
The most expressive vocoder singing I ever heard. Flawless.
Compared to the original songs on the album it really misses James Levi and Ray Parker and the absence of a saxophone player. Yet it's great to see !
Maupin on EWI, but who's the guy on second keyboard!?!?
Webster Lewis!
Q maskesD
I just got Man Child on vinyl. Damn it’s good!
Wow! Who’s that Bass Player? Some knows the name?
Paul Jackson
Rotterdam, Doelen, still got the pictures, so great to see this here.
Wow something sounds kinda wrong here

@Funky Monk Don’t i know it! PJ was my bro-in-law, and jammin with him (and Levi,) was always “think fast, and lock it in the pocket”
FANTASTIC !!
