- In this video, Bob Paulinski, Master of Wine talks about the Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux, an excellent source for value. Many of the wines can be found in the $25 to $40 (USD) range.
If you’re looking for the best value in Bordeaux, Cru Bourgeois is the place to look. Search out those words on the wine label. The wines show the telltale Bordeaux character, along with a true sense of place. The journey of Cru Bourgeois has been a long one with it first being mentioned in the middle-ages. Along the way, the story has plenty of ups and downs, so much so, it's worthy of a docudrama.
The Cru Bourgeois classification includes a range of select petit châteaux from the Left Bank. It’s solely comprised of red wines. It stands in contrast to the 1855 classification that has remained virtually unchanged since being published. The Cru Bourgeois classification is evolving, wine properties may be added or dropped from the list. There are a range of quality-minded requirements that must be met. Currently, nearly 250 chateaux carry the designation. If you’re in wine geek mode, click the link to read about the fine details.
WINES tasted in this video:
2016 Chateau La Badie - Medoc, approximate price $35
2015 Chateau Ramafort - Medoc, approximate price $25
A very good article.

Berry Bros in the UK is a good source for wine-related information.

But the bottom line is the most current classification system, while not perfect, it is broadly a reliable and trusted resource when it comes to searching out high-quality wines from this part of the world, usually at reasonable prices.
CRU BOURGEOIS COVERS THE FOLLOWING LEFT BANK APPELLATIONS
Médoc, Haut-Médoc, Listrac, Moulis, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe.
There are three tiers of wines within the classification: Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Superieur, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.

When I walked by the Bordeaux aisle at Total Wine today I thought of you Bob.
Thanks for that. 🍷
Once you move outside of the Grand Cru Classe wines and the more prestigious AOCs, there is some fantastic value to be found in the Medoc. Both those wines can be found here in the UK for around £18 - £20 a bottle ($23 - $26). Tonight we are finishing off a 2018 Muddy Water Pinot Noir from Waipara, NZ, with the Missus beef casserole and mash. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
Bordeaux is heaped with value and often aged wines can be had. A good kiwi Pinot Noir and beef casserole. Living large! 🍷
Bob, I'd like to suggest a potential topic for future videos. I think Loire Valley wines often fly under radar of the general public. They have such a variety of great white wines. Let's not forget Cab Franc from Chinon too.
Igor, I’ve made a note, I like your idea. I good deal to discuss with Loire. Some excellent values as well.
@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I once asked myself this question: if I had to pick one region for the only white wine I can drink for the rest of my life. The answer was clear: Loire Valley.
@@igorerovenko I can see that, plenty of different styles there to choose from.
Thank you for a great educational video, Bob. I've found plenty of good-value wines from Medoc in the past. Writing the comment to support your channel. Cheers!
Hi Igor, your comment is much appreciated. Bordeaux and specifically Medoc has an ample tinge of values. Cheers. 🍷
We clearly need a three P MW collaboration: Peter, Patrick and Paulinski!
Haha! Not a simple thing to coordinate! But maybe!
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine Curious why it is so difficult. Is it mostly a location issue (i.e., you guys are in different parts of CA) or are there other factors? Seems like such a natural collaboration opportunity.
@@Reese-sq1cj I’m near San Francisco, both Patrick and Peter are near LA. Next time I’m down that way, I’ll try to set it up. It would be fun!
Hi Bob, thanks for your sugestion first and some cru bourgeois can be found in Hong Kong supermarket arround US10-12, what a wonderful choice for daily drink with my family.
Hi, that’s an incredible bargain. Thanks for commenting. 🍷
Great video. Thanks. Chasse Spleen and Ormes de Pez are both very ageworthy crus bourgeois. I had a 2000 Chasse last year which drank well. Two others which aren’t in the bourgeois classification are Meyney( said to be worthy of 5th growth) and Sociando Mallet which is built to age - I was able to taste ‘96 a couple of years ago. They all avoid the high prices of the classed growths
I’m glad you liked the video. The two Cru Bourgeois you’ve mentioned are excellent year after year. I’ve had many old bottle of Meyney usually outstanding. As for Sociando Mallet, I have several bottles of ‘98. Not a great vintage, better in the Right Bank, but still quite nice. Sociando Mallet chose to not be part of the Cru Bourgeois classification, as have some other higher profile producers. It’s alway good hearing from you. Cheers!
Nice line-up! I'm always short on Bordeaux learning... I need to do something about that. Hopefully the geeky article will help! 😂 And nice touch to add the pairing comments along with "this is me literally making the pairing". Cheers!
Hi Juanma, knowing Bordeaux is critical to your wine journey. So much of the wine world emulates it. Dinner turned out well, I’ve got game! 😂
I love the bottom up” pouring moment.😈
Me too! I was playing around with different angles, that one worked well. 🍷
One of my favorite Cru Bourgois is "Chateau Preuillac". It is a Medoc in the style of Château Lilian Ladouys although a bit more affordable. Not very well known, but highly recommended in my view. vintages 2009, 2012, 2016 are recommended. Check it out if you can.
Hi Rick, I've had Chateau Preuillac from time to time, it is very good. Lillian Ladouys is one I've had many times, another good one. They have opted out of the upcoming Cru Bourgeois classification. At least I recall something about that happening. Always seems to be some drama in the background.
As usual, great video and information!! Cheers.
Hi Carl, thanks. Much appreciated. 🍷
Thanks for the tips. Question: I see some of the pictures you showed have Concurs de Bordeaux "medal" labels on them. I have found them to be a reliable indicator of a good Bordeaux regardless of price. Would you agree?
Many wine competitions are nearly meaningless. Concurs de Bordeaux is one that I find to be a solid resource. Thanks for supporting my channel. 🍷
Thanks!
Hi Laura, very generous of you! 🍷
Thanks! Great video!
Cool! Thanks for letting me know. 🍷
I'm from a country that heavily taxes alcohol so the entry level Bordeaux CBs priced around 20-25USD are truly best bang for my buck.
Which country? Malaysia has high taxes as well, but the prices aren’t so bad based on the strength of the US$.
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine I'm actually a Malaysian and only watched the video half way and didn't realised you bought those wine at PJ Tong Woh. No wonder the labels seem familiar. Small world!
@@calvinwxj Small world indeed. I travel to Malaysia every few months, my partner lives in Petaling Jaya. She introduced me to Tong Woh, also like Lavo as well. Cheers, 🍷
Hey Bob , thanks for the wonderful video. If I buy Bordeaux , it is almost always Cru Bourgeois. I've found that Cotes de Blaye or Castillion are good values, too. I'm starting to get into Chinon. Could you possible do a segment on Loire wines. Much appreciation , Jack
Hi Jack, thanks for the nice comment. You drink many of the same wines as I do. You’re the second person to ask about a Loire video. I’ll add it to the list. Probably coming in October. Cheers. 🍷
Good video showcasing value Bordeaux. Ch. Chasse Spleen is another good Cru Bourgeois. Price has crept up unfortunately. Cheers.
Thanks! CS has long been a good source, but yes, the prices have jumped. Another good one, Lillian Ladouys is opting out with the upcoming classification.
Great tip for a wine novice like me! I have enjoyed some nice French aged wines but have trouble picking them out from the many bottles on the shelf.
Thanks for commenting. This video should help when Bordeaux shopping. Cheers. 🍷
Good one Bob. Bourgeois can be hit and miss but well worth searching for the style you like. Pessac Leognan is a good source of great wine at reasonable prices, different style to Medoc of course.
Hi Rick, I find Cru Bourgeois to be more hits than misses, but Pessac Léognan is consistently at a high standard. If also a fan of the satellite appellations around St Emilion. Cheers. 🍷
I watch every episode and enjoy your opinion. Just wish you had selected younger wines that might have a wider presence , certainly in the US. Understand that you are overseas but ….
I appreciate the support. Good point on the age of the wines. The truth is the vast majority of options had some age. That said, stay with Cru Bourgeois from strong recent years, 2018, 2019 or 2020 should get a result.
Even better❤❤value, small production❤ Hawkes Bay nz top merlot cabs❤ brookfields gold label or cj pask declaration❤ punch waaayy above their price points in weak nzd sans hyped francais snobbery❤.
Your channel grows , BP❤ congratulations are in order❤
Hi B Ver, I love Hawkes Bay, big fan of the Syrah as well. Not the easiest to find in some places around the world. The channel is doing alright. I’m pleased. The biggest challenge is finding time with my day job! Cheers, 🍷
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine yes, the dreaded "day job" !
Locally, in nz, spoiled for choice in wine excellence- export for small producers is a TUFF process, big gubbmint reaching evermore heights for small biz to scale♡
@@bver1149 It’s good to be spoiled! 🍷
@@bobpaulinskimasterofwine yes OUR great boutiques sell into a tiny domestic market; typically we pay UNDER what comparable famous Euro or American wines go for☆ spoiled indeed.
Imho your channel's quality content deserves many more subscribers and will double in next 12 - 18 months.
Enjoying the quizzes a few times a week- fun and informative- thank you!
@@bver1149 Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate the channel support. Overall, I’m happy with the channel performance. I have a wine import company that takes much of my time. I also write for a couple of wine publications. I work on UA-cam when I can, but I’m doing everything myself. It’s been wonderful connection with good people like yourself.
