One of the great things about growing up in the prog rock era was that non-musicians such as me learned what musical instruments sounded like even if we were too clumsy to have any hope of playing them ourselves. For oboe listen to 'Bolero - The Peacock's Tale' from KIng Crimson's album Lizard. For clarinet try 'Jackdaw' by Audience, goes really well with fuzz bass. For bassoon, crumhorn and any number of other mysterious devices look no further than Gryphon.
The instrument Mel Collins (ex-and-future-King Crimson) is playing is a soprano sax. Also, Camel is not related to Yes. There WAS a brief connection between Camel and the band Caravan, when Dave and Richard Sinclair (seen here) from Caravan were both briefly in Camel (which led to that formation being dubbed 'Caramel'). One interesting thing to note from this video is that the Minimoog Peter Bardens solos on goes wonky at around 6:10. You can hear the pitch go totally to hell and there's nothing he can really do about it so he transfers the solo to the string synth. String synths were a relatively new toy for keyboard players at this time (remember Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver"?) and it's all over the Camel albums Moonmadness and Rain Dances.
The nexus between Camel and Yes is that Andy Latimer and Bill Bruford were born on the same day.
Another fantastic essential band. Impressed by the quality of their live sound? They had roadies dedicated to it
I came in for a Camel ride, and you give flight to Goose at the end? My home state boys!!! I'm an old hippie and Camel was a highlight of my continuous concert days. Would love to see you Goose-up your audience! But I would put them more in the Dead-Head/ Phish category, (there is a video out there with Trey sitting in with them!) amazing that Camel gave you that vibe. Peace and love on your journey.
Andy Ward on the drums is a stellar beast
Awesome performance and reaction.
Great pick John You have good taste!! They are one of my all time favorite bands. Every song takes you on a journey. See you on the live stream. Yours is the Best interactive request show on the internet.!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Camel are only related vaguely to Yes. Tom Brislin played with both bands briefly. That's it.
This is one of the few songs where Mel Collins detracts from the song. He's wonderful generally, but the original Andy Latimer solo was so spectacularly good (in my view, the best solo of all time) that breaking it up to fit in the sax breaks spoils it a bit.
Andy Latimer is one of the best guitarist to come out of the Canterbury progressive rock scene
Camel have nothing to do with the Canterbury scene. They originate in Guildford. Some Caravan members joined them. That's the only link Camel have to the Canterbury scene.
Straight Alto Saxophone, Straight Soprano Sax
Looks like a soprano sax to me.
Try the studio version (on the album). It is much better than the live version. Andy Latimer is a guitar beast!
I prefer the version on a Live Record. Amazing interplay between Andrew and Mel.
Bassoon? Clarinet? Neither. That's Mel Collins on the soprano sax.
True, but to be fair, not that much difference between sax and clarinet in general, and this is like a cross.
@@MMasterDE Sax is a brass instrument, while a clarinet is a woodwind... with a reed?
...I stand corrected... Sax is a reed instrument of the woodwind family, too
@@grega8586 hehe, I've played both. 😉
Sort of tangentially Canterbury scene related.
