  • My review of the alright but overrated film The Howling.
The Howling is a 1981 American horror film directed by Joe Dante, and starring Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, and Robert Picardo. Based on the novel of the same name by Gary Brandner, the film follows a television newswoman sent to a remote mountain resort after a fatal incident with a serial killer, unaware that the inhabiting residents are werewolves.
The film was released on April 10, 1981 and became a moderate success, grossing $17.9 million at the box office. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for the makeup special effects by Rob Bottin.
The film won the 1980 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film while still in development, and was one of the three high-profile wolf-themed horror films released in 1981, alongside An American Werewolf in London and Wolfen. Over the years, The Howling has accumulated a cult following.
Its' financial success aided Joe Dante's career, and prompted Warner Bros. to hire Dante (as director) and Michael Finnell (as producer) for Gremlins.
A franchise consisting of seven sequels arose from the film's success.

Good review. I like the film, but not one of my favorite werewolf films. I can see it being overrated and I do agree on the part of why the colony didn't kill the couple when they got there.

MaN! I am biased, but I loved this movie (and this series..sort of. Kind of goes down hill.) MORE WEREWOLVES! And where else can you get Christopher Lee (TH2) as a dark hunter?

My early 1980s werewolf movie would revolve around a hobo riding the rails and killing people. Buck Flower as hobo. Lee Van Cleef as railroad cop. Working title: Where Wolf?

From the bottom of my heart, I just wanted to say thank you Matt. This is still one of my favorite werewolf films...and yeah, it isn't a great movie but the effects, directing and acting are solid. Now, I do admit that there are a couple missed opportunities regarding the werewolves screen time-wise, like they could've shown some earlier in the film. But still, it''s a pretty good film IMO. Hey, at least you think it's okay LOL. I'm actually more curious about your thoughts on the sequels....it continues.

Its funny that Steve Johnson "Robert Downey Junior of Special Effects" prefers this werewolf transformation over American Werewolf. He worked on both films by the way. You guys should watch his interview in Stan Winston School, its about 3 hours long but you will hear some funny stories and interesting facts about the Van Damme predator, Ghostbusters, Night of the Demons etc.

8:53 Fuck yeah It would've been awesome to see Sam as baddass cop kind of like his character in ''Shakedown'' Richie Marks with his 45 mag LAR Grizzly Pistol fucking werewolfs on the streets yes that would've 10 times awesome then this so/so werewolf film we ended up with IMHO!
10:03 Yes! once again your a roll Matt I agreed lol
18:45 I always felt the werewolfs in this look almost like the werewolfs in ''Dog Soldiers'' favorite look of the werewolfs on screen IMHO!
Solid job on the review Matt are the features on the blu ray any good like the new stuff shout factory did?

New features aren't much. A 12 minute or such 'Horrors Hallowed Grounds with Sean Clark'...an interview with a producer...an interview with one of the co-writers...a new commentary with the author of the book...honestly, it's meh.
