From Canada here. Explain to me the logic of privatization of a regulatory authority, how does that work?? What is the point of government if it farm out its responsibility for protecting the common good. What a daft idea.
Shi Yuan .....Total corruption! Profits over people! As always! These government contracts should never have been privatised! And building and fire regulations should be left to government inspectors too! Do not privatise these industries! It destroys public safety! People cut corners for profit! Fire officers should issue safety certificates!!
Sprinkler systems should be mandatory in all buildings & condominiums , they are heat activated & turn on one at a time which keeps the fire contained to whichever unit it originated in. Exterior fires can be more hazardous however this is why we build with fire resistant materials , concrete etc. All current & future projects should require adequate sprinkler systems and older existing buildings need to be retrofitted with sprinklers too or else it's time to rip them down & rebuild so they can live up to today's standards! They gotta raise the bar citizens lives depend on it! Sprinkler systems should be the "bare minimum"
Sprinklers would have done nothing at a fire like Grenfel, since of the 400 required heads, their would have only been enough water to power about 20 of them. This is based on the idea that fires only start in apartments one at a time. Even if huge pipework was installed, their is neither enough water or electricity in the area to operate them. Although they MAY have subdued the initial fire before the cladding caught alight, more than 90% of cladding fires start OUTSIDE the building. Even blaming the cladding was ignoring the fact that it was completely incorrectly installed, with NONE of the 400+ fire separation barriers fitted. The REAL problem lies in government austerity, where district surveyors were virtually abolished, working on paperwork without site inspections. This allowed developers to appoint their own surveyors who were neither competent or had the necessary experience to approve work on public buildings. The truth is as simple at that, but no one is willing to stand up and admit it. PS, I am a retired chartered engineer, with 45 years experience in the design of theatres, cinemas and film studios. We never see a life threatening fire in these types of buildings, simply because they cannot happen. Grenfel became a national disgrace following it's renovation, but no one has the guts to publish the truth. All the talk about sprinklers and fire alarms is simply a red herring to muddy the waters. Fire alarm in large buildings can be lethal, causing panic, leading to injury and people ending up trapped in overloaded lifts within the fire building. This can all be triggered by someone burning the toast. When evacuation becomes necessary, it needs to be controlled and supervised by competent people. Fire alarms in large public buildings are SILENT, allowing investigation and on rare occasions people moved to a safer location.
the design of the building worked before they added the cladding, the design made it so if there was a fire on one of the floors it would be contained until fire brigade arrive to put it out. when they added the cladding if there was fire and the fire was able to spread to the cladding the flames would shoot up the air space between the cladding and the walls because of the draft
BRE and the KCTMO NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. The Kensington and Chelsea Borough is THE RICHEST IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. That means the Kensington and chelsea council recieves the most in taxes and therefore the most funding to spend on managing housing. Grenfell was in poor condition for many many years, before the cladding was even present, but even with all the complaints, they apparently couldn't afford to fund it? This is a case of mass negligence by the KCTMO and they MUST be held accountable.
Most plastic products are a bi-product of crude oil waste, they process it to make plastic, a very and highly flammable product, once a light will admit toxin smoke, and they put this on a home to make it look good, I suggest the Prime Minister put it on his house if he dare.
After the fire at Grenfell Tower; the Grenfell Victims Association had three vans mounted with L.E.D billboards drove around London with these messages: "Seventy-one dead" "And still no arrests" "How come?" Much like in the movie "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri."
If the UK doesn't do something about the building regulations and fire safety now then another Grenfell will happen. It will just be a matter of time before another Grenfell happens. Are the 70 people that died in Grenfell not enough to prompt change? How many more people must die before change is made? The UK is out of step with fire safety compared to the rest of the world. To be honest. I say stuff the whole eco friendly drive if it means that people will be safe in the buildings that they live in then it is worth sacrificing the eco drive to save the lives of people.
Its worse than this, they knew cladding was a massive fire risk in the early 80s! When the various councils around the country where finding out how poorly these large blocks and towers had been built they had to start tearing them down or carrying out remedial work. The cladding was identified with all sorts of risks, making the buildings rot internally because it kept rain inside, it covered up structural problems and was a fire risk. More than 30 years before they covered Grenfell in it councils knew it was risky.

Too many coincidences isn't there. The extracter on the roof that should have being working would have kept the stairway clear of smoke so residents could get out. It didn't turn on....
Any fool can see these panels were, and those still in existence still are, highly flammable - the manufacturer had a responsibility to test and give sufficient warnings regarding their limitations and suitability- at the very least it should have stated it was a product unsuitable for any domestic development or development over 4 stories. It’s unreasonable to expect a fire safety engineer or architect (who have been effectively hoodwinked ) into believing this product had a fire rating of 0 based only on its outer skin. After 3 years of questioning everyone apart from the manufacturer we seem to be getting nowhere very slowly- implying blame and going into finite detail in areas which had no real bearing on the events or would have made no difference to the outcome- yes it’s of interest but time to resolve this quickly before it happens again is paramount. If this building were a plane ✈️ it would have been sorted within 12 months!! It’s sickening that 72 people are dead and it was inferred the fire brigade was some how at fault when in fact they were on the scene within 6 minutes and facing a nightmare inferno 15 minutes later !! 15 minutes the whole building was ablaze!! - These panel’s are deadly - highly flammable and toxic and should NEVER have been given any fire rating. It’s a total disgrace to the British Standards and/or any standard (EU) and all they stand for. The regulators should have be on the stand along with the manufacturer FIRST!!!! - this is where the criminal charges and justice is needed!!!! 72 dead- 3 years and confusion- this should have been finished within 12 months with those responsible from both The manufacturer and regulator serving jail terms. 👍♥️😇🌹
