Stencil Making for Custom Painted Fishing Lures - Make your own Custom Airbrush Stencils. I get asked often what I use and how I make my stencils so I decided to do a full detailed video on how to make them and the materials I use.
The video is a little longer than I usually do but I wanted to make sure I cover all the details and answer most of the questions I receive.
Software I use to create the patterns is Adobe Illustrator and Cricut Design Space to actually do the cutting. File type I use to cut is an SVG file.
Here is the cricut model I use

Here is the cutting mat I use

Here is the brand of vinyl I use for Stencils

I retired after being an art teacher, specializing in Airbrush operations from Automotive, to graphic design... I loved your video. I was asked to help a lure company with their stencil designs. I showed them to first pencil draw their designs, then black ink them in, scan them and the use Corel Draw (Illustrator works fine), vectorise the image and then clean up the lines. Save as a SVG and let the vinyl cutter do it's magic. I found Lazor cutters produce gas with some vinyls which can be dangerous, I'm unsure of that fact. Your video brought back memories of my grandfather in Michigan carving his own lures with me on his front porch ... good times ... nice video mate (I move to Australia after 9 years US Army including Vietnam 70-71 101st Airborne)

Thank You, what seems easy to us may not be for others. I spent 35 years in the printing industry so I was brought up on Corel and Illustrator. The patterns you can create are pretty much unlimited. Thanks for Watching glad you enjoyed!

@uncleloy6803. I took the stencil class this past Saturday, 4 to 8pm.time slot. Best time....classes are smaller. I was lucky enough enough to get a 1on1 instruction. I'm 69 yes. old..don't possess the greatest of computer skills, but we got hooked up and things went fine. You don't need any subscription programs like he mentioned. I downloaded the Cricut program from the website and also used the free Inkscape. Like he said, Ron uses the Adobe, but worked with me on the Inkscape. He's very thorough with his presentation and has the answer to any question you might have...so don't be afraid to ask. His many years in digital printing really shines. Time for me well spent. Will save you a lot of frustration (and vinyl) over trying do this yourself. Hope you 2 can meet and have fun.

Ran across your video and you did a good job explaining everything. I use flexi of course it’s pricey for just lure making but any vector program should work as long as it communicates with your cutter. With simple layout one could just use an exacto knife to cut a copy. Any way great job and good luck with your channel.

@@shawnfarris8908 Yeah for one reason is the stencils are only good for about 10 baits then they lose their adhesive so if you have a cricut that's not a big deal but if I was selling them people would be complaining saying they don't last. That's why I did the video on how the Professional Home baitmaker can make their own. The cricut is a little expensive but it also a great tool for many aspects of bait making. Thanks for watching!
