I didn't work for a FANG, but I worked at the same level, same "notoriety" in the industry and trust me, the choice of this over that, has a hell of an upside once you get established. Working for Google, any FANG company, etc... is a grind at another level. Some people will benefit, and be stellar, even those, will pay a price.

I worked as a freelancer for 2 years and was always one month away from being homeless. Working for yourself is not glamorous and it doesnt pay well at all for several reasons.
      1) When people see that you are a one man operation they immediately presume that you are extremely cheap and you will do ANYTHING for pennies.
      2) Most people will try to lowball you. Sure you can be a harda$$ and stand by your pricing but that usually means you wont get the business.
      3) To make any sort of living as a freelancer you need to be a good sales person. You might have the greatest service in the world but if you lack sales skills you dont stand a chance.
Sure, working for a boss sucks but atleast you know you are getting a secure paycheck every month. You need to know your strengths and many people just arent good at sales.

Man, you're just an amazing, kind, loving human being. You are literally saving my life. Dropped out of a Chemical Engineering degree to dedicate myself fully to web dev. Soon, I'll be leaving Venezuela, my country, to move to Argentina to pursue a better life. Things in my house economically are getting really, really bad. I can barely eat twice a day and things in Venezuela are getting even worse. What you do is helping me BIG TIME. Your videos are so full information, I spend all the time of my days coding and watching your videos. Found some small jobs on the internet freelancing, where I was able to make money so I can leave this place. Everything thanks to you. Thank you very, very much. You are helping me to change my life. I'm only 21 and for the first time in my short life, I feel like I can actually have a future, thank to this. Keep doing you, brother. You have a huge community backing you up. I hope to be able to support your patreon soon.

Hey Brad, thanks for the nice words and advice. I'm a webdeveloper for about 6 years now, full time. Last year I was working on a really big project for my company. I put a lot of effort and time into it and I was very proud of that piece of work. The Project was a success. A few months later I went to my boss and asked him for the leadership of the next project. He said something like this: "No. You just started in this industry. You have no experience in leading a group of people. Some people work years for such a position." As you can imagine such words are really depressing. I spoke to a friend of mine and she gave me a book about entrepreneurship and how to build self esteme for yourself. It was inspiring. One technique in that book was to go into yourself and find the goals and dreams that you have (short term but also long term) and write the ten most important ones on a piece of paper. Then you chase those goals. If you accomplish a goal you cross it out and copy the hole list and add a new goal to it. I'm doing this for about 10 months now. One goal on this list was to start my own business. And one month ago I did it!
Long story short. If you feel that you can do more than working 9-5 then do it. If you have an idea, plan it out and start doing it. I don't know if my business will be successful but I have a plan and stick to it. Thanks again for this type of content. Greetings from Germany.
ps. I don't know the name of the book because I gave it back.

That is the thing is coming up with an idea that isn't flooded. It is very possible though. I would start doing research and looking for different marketplaces you could build and sell things on. You have themes, plugins for various CMS, mobile apps whether paid or ad based, Chrome extensions, courses, small apps like say an flv to mp3 converter, etc. Scour the internet for ideas. Even if it has been done, doesn't mean you can't do it a bit different and be successful. Maybe build a marketplace where people could sell things and you get a percentage. I would use something like Laravel for speedy development. I don't have the time right now but I will look into this sort of thing in the future for a video. I have been out of the game for a while as I am focused on education

Traversy Media Hey! Can you please share if doing educational videos on UA-cam like yours could earn an income well enough to keep with day-to-day needs? How much do you earn from your channel monthly?

I Agree. If you really like Software Dev, don’t join to a Company, where you probably are going to get stuck or forced to stay in a concrete area or technology for years... then, when that technology in particular becomes obsolete, there are a significant risk for you to get “retired” by a HR blande runner. Thanks for the video.

Brad...you are the best!!! I had always been watching your videos for any help in programming in the past years, but now I am addicted to you!! I have already got few of your courses in Udemy plus I love these informal insightful videos you share of your life. And the best part to what you do is YOU, a wonderful human being!! I would love if you continue on these types of videos in 2019 and beyond.
Also, please do make a video on different application ideas which we can use as developers. I totally connected when you mentioned you refused Google, even I wanna make my own apps eventually and quit working for other companies. Please do put videos with ideas on building applications. Adios!

Your videos are awesome. That was really motivational and gave a lot of insight into the other side of a developer's life. A lot of tech career advice can come off a little high and mighty but yours are super down to Earth and awesome.

You create quality content and I am so inspired by you. Starting out in programming is overwhelming in a crowded nutshell. You quiet some of the noise for me and I am able to be more decisive and effective in my learning. I look forward to the day that I can give back in expertise and positivism which your content has given to me.
