After people generally loving the premiere and some disagreements on Mortyplicity (I personally like the Turkey episode), most people actually agree on this season being the weakest until Rickternal Friendshine. The biggest weakness to this episode may be the fast pace of the episode (maybe could've been improved with shaving off some car bits to dive a bit deeper. But I am hopeful on seeing a big shakeup with the hour long finale (which is the midway point of the "10 seasons Rick and Morty") after seeing these episode titles.

@@NerdMiGerd I agree 110%. like I might prefer season 1-3 over 4 & 5, but not significantly so. R&M isn't becoming shit, it just isn't outdoing itself every season, and that's not that big of a deal. Every show is going to have a best season, or a season you like more than the others, and it's not necessarily going to be the newest one, especially a show as episodic as this. I liked season 5 better than 4 because it's trying new things, things that I think went unappreciated in this video a bit personally. Like the Voltron episode was great cause it was one of the few, if not the only, episode where the entire family was in the same plot, no A and B. That was pretty cool to see. That adds up to seeing how they function as a family, as a whole, if just a little bit anyway. I even really liked the sperm monster episode, but that was an episode built on shock value, so it doesn't surprise me some people hate it, that's the kind of episode that is, you either hate it or you love it. I loved it cause I eat dark shit up. Dark story telling, dark humor, the whole shibang.

I'm fascinated by the idea that Memory Rick isn't just a younger Rick, but possibly a better version of him as imagined by Bird Person.
And yeah, that one off exchange where they talk about Rick's "dead daughter" and "creeps who move in with abandoned adult Beths" is good stuff - Rick and Morty have jumped between versions of the family, but it would still feel pretty twisted if they did an episode down the line where all the Ricks who abandon their child Beths never come back, and get replaced by adult Ricks whose Beths died in childhood.
I get the impression from the commentary tracks I've listened to that their focus really is on the episode to episode stuff - it's more like the Simpsons in the way it treats lore and continuity and that kind of stuff. You get something extra from it if you watched the show a long time and get the references to earlier things, but you don't need to in order to enjoy it. It's a good way to make sure that continuity doesn't become a cage for a fundamentally episodic show.

    • @GlacialScion

You know something that’s kinda bothered me since S3? In S1-S2, we had several episodes that showed that despite how flawed Rick is, he has a heart. And since Rickshank Rickdemption, not only have we not really had another one of those episodes, but Rick seems to want to prove that he is such a cold bastard. It’s given him kind of a worse energy and I hope it pays off into something.

    • @BobtheX
      @BobtheX 3 роки тому +6

I disagree with that. Rick has always been a massive piece of shit since the pilot episode. The first thing he ever did was drag Morty out of bed and attempt to nuke the planet. The premise of the show is that he's taking Morty out of school so he can use him. Not help him. Use him. Like that's what's so funny about it for the first 2 seasons, Rick is genuinely a terrible grandparent and a huge piece of shit. He constantly insults Morty and puts him down, to an absurd degree considering their age difference. He puts Morty in constant danger and almost never thanks him. The only heart he ever shows is when he's at his most vulnerable, and even then it never lasts for more than a moment. That's why I'm hopeful the finale will address that, I feel like the overarching story of Rick and Morty has to be Morty learning to cut Rick out of his life or stop taking his shit. Their toxic relationship is the heart of the show's creative stalemate. Either it's a Aqua Teen like show where relationships don't matter and we can be as shitty as we want. Or it's like Archer/Futurama where characters grow from season to season.

    • @michaelpatton3477

@@BobtheX I mean I didn’t say he was a good person, I’m saying that when Morty was almost raped he put his ego aside went out of his way to salvage Morty’s adventure, get him home safely, and then killed his rapist. Moments like that don’t make it right when he drags Morty out and attempts to nuke the planet and all the other terrible shit he does, but it shows that he does care for Morty. And knowing that makes it all the more interesting because Morty absolutely does need to just cut him out of his life like you said. And what will Rick do when he does that? Will he hop to a reality where Morty isn’t sick of him yet? Or will he genuinely try to fix things?

What I love about this one is that it doesn't pull back, unlike Rickshank.
You see Diane and Beth die right in front of him and he's clearly shaken by it, but then the writers decide "Oh maybe all of that didn't happen, Rick is too cool to be traumatized".
But this one doesn't pull back, it's this perfect mix of the best of Rickshank and something like the old man and the seat where we get a glimpse of what goes on in his head (Granted, Rickshank is hella funny, so even when they decide not to continue with Rick's backstory it remains a good time).
I like it when Rick is nerfed into being just a guy, not a God.
Rickmurai did well telling how he got there. He was simple Rick all along. 🥲

All of them were fun, interesting and had good stories with some through lines that put into place interesting ideas. I love when they drop bread crumbs about interesting ideas and concepts, and lore about all the universes. Mort Dinner: Not much to dislike, just really solid on all fronts like the Season 2 and Season 4 premieres.
Mortyplicity: Really like how bananas the premise gets, details like how every family clone doesn't go off planet are nice, just not as emotional as similar ones like Total Rickall
Rickconvenient Mort: Planetina episode personally great overall, wish there was some continuity carryover after this, maybe will in season finale...?
Sperm Episode: Like some parallels between the arcs but not well written, female empowerment feels forced, female politician does nothing, no direct reference to the last episode with Morty's emotional state
Car Episode: Solid episode, Midnight personally likes it, I thought it was just average tbh
Thanksplotation Spectacular: Even though I'm 🇨🇦 I personally like rewatching it, just a fun premise taken as far as it could. The better independence day episode that makes the sperm episode feel useless.
Gotron episode: interesting sections of each episode that feel off from each other, also not as well written to me, I watched it from amazon prime 🇨🇦 (watched this in place of car episode, it was a mixup) so after seeing sperm episode, left a bad taste in my mouth
Rickternal Friendshine: Love the plot and continuity progression, just a bit too fast paced, not enough time to settle on, maybe could've taken out a bit of the garage stuff in its place.

The words and the connotation of those words we're 100% plutonic. Only because a romantic interest actually diminishes a rejection to such a strong connection. Sex will drive us to do lots of things but when we feel a true connection with someone it's so much stronger. And I fully agree with you think of it how you want to think of it as the viewer as it doesn't make too much of a difference. In my point of view it does make a slight difference because when sex or romance is part of the motivation of wanting to be with that person it's a motivation based on something physical. You can usually get over that pretty quickly. And we all know who writes this show if he wanted us to think it was romantic we would have known for sure

There is currently a theory that the inner episodes have largely been from alternate universes. For example, in the main R&M universe, it was revealed that Rick was a huge fan of Voltron (the Toxic Versions episode). Yet in this season, Rick is a huge fan of _Gotron_ . That isn't a mistake either. There have been a lot of little easter eggs throughout this season that people have been ignoring which suggests we're watching an entirely different Rick and Morty.

What I would say about what you were talking about before about the show going deep and how it takes a backseat to the laughs, dare I say that the laughs wouldn't be as funny if they weren't willing to go so deep because the reason that the show is so funny and relatable is because things in life are funny because of how deep and how thought-provoking some moments can be. I think that Rick and Morty specially for the type of show that it is goes there every single time that it needs to. Whereas Family Guy never tips too far into a emotionally significant moments because they keep everything in between a certain set of levels and ever gets too up and ever goes too down whereas Rick and Morty goes all over the charts as far as like tone of the show goes.

I thought it was odd how many people wanted to talk about Planetina and how few people have anything to say about Rickternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mort. We learned that, as far as Birdperson knows, Beth and Diane are dead. We learned that Rick apparently had things to say about how sad it was that some Ricks can't hack it and have to go live with the abandoned Beths who didn't die. It put the whole Simple Rick Cookies plot into a devastating context. We learned that Rick is capable of loving someone who doesn't love him back. We learned that BIRDPERSON HAS A DAUGHTER.

The most interesting part about it to me is that on the surface it almost seems to retcon his fake backstory being fake, with them confirming his daughter is dead, and implying that other Ricks killed her. But then I realized their wording: “Killing us won’t bring HER back.” Not ‘them,’ ‘her.’ So while Beth and Diane are both dead, it seems like the Council of Ricks only killed one of them.
Given how Rick’s talked about how he couldn’t make his marriage work in S1, my guess for what happened is that young Beth was killed by the Ricks and the grief of it tore Rick and Diane apart, and Diane either died of unrelated events or, if the show were to go this dark, she killed herself as a consequence.
The one thing I don’t get though: Who is that Morty baby in S2 that Rick’s holding in a picture in Birdperson’s house? We now know this is not his grandchild, as Beth died when Rick was 35. Is it just some other Morty? Our Morty? Maybe Rick tried at one point to live with a Beth at the point in time when Morty was born, but it didn’t work out.
There’s some part of me that thinks that the Morty baby was meant to be his grandchild but the writers just forgot and that we’ll never hear about that again, but I hope not.

Remember: Memory Rick is not our Rick, it's a memory of the Rick in the back yard; a Rick who was a member of the Citadel of Ricks, who knew THIS Mr. Numbus, so forth and so on.
The only thing "amiss" is that he knows his daughter is dead and that Ricks move in with versions of their daughters; but THIS awareness seems to be that of Bird Person, not of that Rick. In short BP knows OUR Rick, who he met (for the first time that we know of) in the S1 finale, is like a hermit crab, his daughter is dead, and that he's moved to this reality to live with a version of his dead daughter. I think we need to accept that our BP knows this Rick isn't his original Rick, but as that Rick is dead this is perhaps "close enough."
More to the point, we don't know what happened to our Rick's BP or at our Rick's Blood Ridge. In fact, our Rick needed to confirm with this BP that they shared memories, suggesting that while many Ricks might have had similar experiences, not all did.

My only thing with this episode is this: why does bird person seem like he wants nothing to do with Rick the whole episode? Every time he sees Rick it’s like he doesn’t want him there, even before Rick only tells BP about his kid because he has too. BP has clearly respected Rick the whole show, so it feels inconsistent

I do like what things we are sure of right now, but I don't think we can say for sure his Beth died. Remember, this is a memory of bird person as he knew rick, not a past rick with the memories of rick himself. Rick himself says "it's more complicated then that" and almost brushes it off, perhaps he lied to bird person, it wouldn't be the first time rick lies to someone he cares about.(especially sense bird person didn't knew about alternate realities up until battle ridge.)
it could be a small oversight from the writers, but I think they are still purposely playing it loose and keeping their cards close in terms of Ricks backstory. personally, I do think it's true but there's more to it that is important.

I was right alongside you about this season. After the excellent placeholder episode 1, the show featured mostly bland placeholder episodes, some of which left me feeling like a barely recognized the characters. The giant incest baby episode felt like the cheapest of edgelord humor, where the only point to any of the jokes was how transgressive they were. But transgression lost its bite a long time ago, when South Park was given free reign to say or do literally anything it wanted. Now, it's just another kind of content for a jaded audience wanting to feel something without having to think about anything.
This episode was definitely the show at its best, because (in my opinion, at least) it challenges the world according to Rick. The linchpin every commentator returns to about it is Blood Ridge, and Bird Person's rejection of Rick's offer. But to understand it, I think we have to reexamine what Rick's offer was in the first place.
I don't think it was the offer of friendship that BP rejected. Rather, it was Rick's nihilistic world-view. BP had just won a brutal battle for something that mattered deeply to him, at great cost. Comrades and loved ones lay dead all around him. And now RIck is telling him to forget all that, because from Rick's multi-verse perspective, it meant nothing. For Rick, Everything BP fought for, bled for, lost loved ones for, and finally won at such great cost, is just an adventure, a meaningless thrill. Ultimately, Rick was inviting Bird Person to join him in his absolute apathy, his isolation, his narcissistic disregard for anything that mattered to anyone.
Rick may love BP in his own way, but because he's a narcissist, he doesn't actually see BP as a separate person with a life of his own that matters to him. What Rick loves is the comfort BP's companionship gives him. To Rick, BP isn't really a person, just a thing that makes him happy.
That's why BP considers Rick a bad friend. He doesn't really care about people, even the people he loves. He may enjoy their company, but he doesn't care what matters to them. This was made plain by his intention never to mention BP's long lost daughter. Had Rick been a real friend, he would have known how much that would matter to BP,. and wanted to help reunited father and daughter, regardless of the fact that it doesn't benefit him. But ultimately, he didn't care what BP wanted. He just wanted to feel less lonely.
This is, I think, the core of the show, Rick banging against the walls of the trap that is his narcissism. No matter how intelligent he is, he can never invent a way to escape his loneliness. Because he thinks his isolation is a function of his genius, and that caring about anything or anyone is an act of stupidity. He's trapped by his own belief that his narcissism isn't a defect, but a strength. And while the show mines this dynamic for endless jokes, it's a sad, bleak, and incredibly accurate portrait.
Black humor is different from edgy humor. It's purpose is to offer a cathartic release through laughter over things that typically make people sad, or furious, or hopelessly depressed. When Rick and Morty is firing on all cylinders, it's black comedy at its best, exploring its themes of alienation, depression, self-loathing, etc, through humor. When it's just trying to see how shocking and gross it can be, it's boring. Shocking and gross is kinda played out. It's 2021, y'all. We had a US president more disgusting than any giant incest baby you could ever conjure up. When the whole world has become "The Aristocrats," it's not a joke anymore.

Your coment nailed it, honestly it wasn't a weird romantic feeling or whatever qoomer shit that some redditors from tumblr say but its that bird person doesn't want to be a piece of shit like the nihlism that rick has done to him, rick doesn't want to be proven wrong because we still don't know the entire story but he is still sad that his original daughter died and he doesn't like how bird person way to cope is more healthy than ricks way to cope of nihilism so in the end the ego of rick is so high he would crumble even more at the idea the whole time he was wrong.

I agree with you so much Captainmidnight. This has been the best episode of this season so far. I enjoyed the first two episodes because they were had like a simple premise and idea and they executed it very well. The rest of the episodes were so bad for me personally. It honestly did not feel like rick and morty. I felt as if the writers just wanted to show how much of a sci FI nerd they were by bombarding the viewers with tons and tons of unnecessary Easter eggs and references from other loved and known entities while trying to be a gross and disgusting as possible. I feel in love with this show because it shows the nuances and complications that a single person can have while they go through life. seeing rick react to his family and friends and slowly learning more about his background and what made him the way he is now is what spawned the huge community of theorist that loves the show and how it tests the audience. That's why any episode that deals with continuity, storyline and are character driven are the best episodes of the show. This season has been the weakest for me personally and this episode showed so much potential that it might save it for me. cannot wait for the season finale. They said they were gonna split the dif.. but they have not really.
