They would get fouled and ez pts were added to the scoreboard. Its not quantamphysics
This is the type of coach who gets "his type of guys" and they play fundamental basketball but lose. Rather things be done "the right way" instead of doing what works with your personnel. He had the ball in his hands because they couldn't stick with him and he makes free throws. Also, his teammates did a poor job at spacing and balancing the floor. Many of the times "guys were open" they were bunched up behind him.
These announcers were more annoying than Lykes’s missed shots. The kid is actually really good he just needs time to get on page just like the rest of the players on our team.
The announcer is really a piece of work!! If Lykes was so bad, the coach would have benched him!! He did exactly what they wanted!! Get fouled and make the foul shots! He never missed!
0:20 - 0:36 : "Players tend to stand and watch him." Then, those players need to move around and try to get into better position. Them standing around isn't his fault, and he can't get them involved if they're not doing anything. 0:42 - 1:17 : "Some bodie(s) have to be open." He could've gotten the ball back to #0 momentarily. However, while you may have teammates 'open', that doesn't mean you have a passing lane open and throwing a bad pass out of a triple-team can easily result in a turnover. 2:10 : He does need to keep from letting them push him to the sideline. He could've made the long pass to the corner out of the back court. Once he got into the front court, they were playing his passing lanes and the only one open for him was #4 (which he should have passed to), but he was fouled again from behind. Oh, and did they notice that, Arkansas was leading? Sure, he needs to work on passing the ball more. Not debating that at all. However, what he was doing was working, which is why they were winning. The D tried to swarm him but continually fouled him and sent him to the line, where he was knocking down free throws. If his team were the ones down by 8 and he was constantly missing free throws or not even getting to the line, I could understand the harshness of their criticism. But throwing bad passes out of double and triple teams can result in turnovers and points on the other end.
When he didn't pass out of a triple team, it was because he wanted to get fouled. If the lead was larger he would have passed to run clock. The game was still pretty close and his getting to the line---and making his FT's put the game out of reach.
The reason Lykes held onto the ball might be ether they want him shooting the free throws or because he's genuinely short and can't throw it over somebody who's a foot and a half taller then him very easily.
As the announcer continued his hate session, the scoreboard kept going up 2 points per possession for Arkansas and a foul on K-states best player. Went from a 1 possession, then 2 possession, then 3 possession game. Checkmate
They're not hating on him. They're absolutely right I agree with what they are saying. He just lucky he made all the free throws he did otherwise he could have cost Arkansas the game
@@matthewanderson5163 he's 'lucky' he's clearly an amazing free throw shooter. If K State is gonna foul the Hogs over and over it should be Lykes cos I Lykes to win
If you know muss's game strategy, he slows the game down with a good lead, even states it post game. Lykes was torching 🔥 triple teams, didn't have to pass ,that was the game plan
This is basic basketball iq. If it’s a close game with little time you get the ball to the man who can shoot free throws. It just so happens that Chris is shifty making it hard to foul or turnover immediately therefore extending the play only to ultimately head to the line. It’s smart, Chris is smart, Miss is smart, this announcer… not so much
These commentators haven't been paying attention to arkansas. Hogs had that game. They're a very confident team and could have clamped k-state that late in the game and both teams knew it
I know that passing the ball is the sportsmanlike thing to do, but in Lykes' defense, he's 5'7" getting guarded by guys who are almost a foot taller than him. He's fast and a deadly shooter, which is why he's guarded so heavily and it makes it almost impossible to pass in most situations. So, I think the announcers should cut him some slack for that.
Hmmmm.....I'm not sure about that. Either you can play Division 1 ball or you can't. That also doesn't give you the green light to keep jacking up 3's when you are 0-7. You don't get a handicap in basketball the same way you do in golf. No offense intended
@@alext2963 None taken, although I disagree. It's not really a handicap, it's more like playing to your advantages, which Lykes obviously gives and takes. He doesn't have height so he can't pass the ball as easily as someone like Vanover, but he's incredibly fast and is normally a sharpshooter around the arch. Lykes not passing (see 0:47) proves what I was saying about heavy guarding and no obvious passing opportunities from his perspective. As far as his threes go from that game, his 3-point percentage ended up being 36.8%, so I think his playing was good but the announcers just did not see it that way.
@@samuellannutti He didn't inspire me at the end of the game. All he showed me was a lot of selfishness, and if the coach told him to hold the ball, I question his tactics
You can clearly see that lykes is indeed fully aware of what's going on and has good court awareness, he can draw those fouls etc he's doing with the coach tells him.
Tbf he’s automatic at the ft line and I kept waiting for him to miss one and tbh if he kept doing that without the coaches instructions he’d get pulled I think that’s what the coach wanted
If he wasnt doing what he was supposed to do, the teammates wouldn’t be feeling pretty good about the whole situation in the team huddles and Lykes wouldnt be on the court period
been watching this kid since he was at Gonzaga. Always a winner. Always coachable. I'd guess he was instructed to keep ball in his hands. He doesn't turn ball over and he's a very good ft shooter...missing a shot is better than a TO. Especially when winning, after running 20 seconds off clock late in game. Notice he made EVERY ft down stretch
I’m gonna assume Muss wanted him to draw the fouls toward the end but he did throw some pretty good bricks up earlier. If you’re gonna chuck it when you’re not open you need to hit one occasionally.
Coach knows that Kansas doesn't have the quickness to steal the ball from Lykes. He's the smallest (5'7") on the court, the quickest, and shoots 90% from the FT line. This analyst doesn't know basketball.

Has this commentator EVER touched the hardwood in an organized, competitive setting?? Lykes doesn’t look to be 6’6 but he does seem to be pretty quick on his feet. When they full court pressed ARK, sometimes the best option isn’t a forced attempted jump pass from a short guard over/around/through 3 taller defenders Mr Commentator. And the worst thing he could’ve done is picked up the ball and killed his dribble. He relied on his speed and ball-handling instead of panicking. I saw fouls getting drawn, not turnovers being committed…and a commentator who needs to be re-evaluated.

@High DFS situation situation situation. His job at those possessions is not to facilitate. K State is in desperation mode with the clock against them so it’s a game of take care of the ball, kill clock, and knock down the free throws. And if Arkansas feels like they can only trust their pg in this situation then I guess they did what they did and it worked. Obviously dude, this won’t work all game where u need offensive flow to be successful
@High DFS You’re as dumb as the commentators, he’s intentionally keeping the ball so he can drain the free throws, i bet his coach isn’t complaining. Commentators are hanging from Lyke’s nuts.
@@stefanobajos6627 passing the ball around would have wasted much more time. You’re an absolute dolt
@@Cookiesr9565 passing the ball around in the situations can also lead to bad passes/turnovers and possibly points on the other end. Instead, he had 0 turnovers, got to the line, and knocked down the free throws.
I remember when announcers was saying the samething about Jordan when he played against Larry bird and the Celtics, saying he was selfish, cocky and someone was going to make him put his tongue back in his mouth. 63 points later and over the years he's considered the GOAT . They should just announce the game and keep their personal agendas too themselves.
That tongue still hanging
@drew Jack I'm a Jordan fan. The only thing is, he never beat Larry Bird and Celtics in the playoffs. The 63 points was a great feat but his teams took the L. When he got a better team it looked more phenomenal because they won a lot.
@@hollywoodhaggar3655 bird can’t hold a candle to MJ, stop it
They lost the game that’s why they called him selfish. Once he started passing more they started winning.
@@hollywoodhaggar3655 However made them relevant in those losses. Boston even made a push to acquire Jordan. We all know the rest!
I understand criticizing a player on broadcast, that's part of the job, but to single him out and act as though he was doing something wrong when he really wasn't is really odd. Lykes didn't do anything wrong, he didn't turn the ball over, got fouled and sealed the game at the line by making all of his free throws. If the coach was upset with the way Lykes was handling the end of the game, he would've called one of his three remaining timeouts and talked things over or pulled Lykes from the game entirely.
This is why he’s not a coach, he just doesn’t understand it. Probably bitter as he’s failed at that in the past as well.
Good job Chris Lykes. Great ball control, patience, and drive. He is playing his position to the fullest. He was forcing the opposing team to guard him hard. They did. He can ball.
“If I’m Muss I’m saying pass…” I’m glad that guys not Muss, then. Super obvious Muss wanted Lykes shooting free throws so he told him to keep the ball. I don’t know why the announcer is incapable of common sense.
Perfect from the line with one minute left and they want him to pass the ball when we are in the double bonus and possibly turn it over...morons
Ok coach
So what your saying is muss doesn’t trust his other players to make free throws? Because you get the ball to the open man regardless
@@dannyj6130 that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying it’s obvious that Lykes was who they wanted shooting them, and they were going to foul. The announcer was blaming Lykes when it was obviously Musselman that told Lykes to hold onto it.

I kept thinking I wish these announcers would shut up
This is the type of coach who gets "his type of guys" and they play fundamental basketball but lose. Rather things be done "the right way" instead of doing what works with your personnel. He had the ball in his hands because they couldn't stick with him and he makes free throws. Also, his teammates did a poor job at spacing and balancing the floor. Many of the times "guys were open" they were bunched up behind him.
He's money from the free throw line and they can't get the ball from him. Not hard to understand. That announcer has some personal bias here
These announcers were more annoying than Lykes’s missed shots. The kid is actually really good he just needs time to get on page just like the rest of the players on our team.
The announcer is really a piece of work!! If Lykes was so bad, the coach would have benched him!! He did exactly what they wanted!! Get fouled and make the foul shots! He never missed!
0:20 - 0:36 : "Players tend to stand and watch him."
Then, those players need to move around and try to get into better position. Them standing around isn't his fault, and he can't get them involved if they're not doing anything.
0:42 - 1:17 : "Some bodie(s) have to be open."
He could've gotten the ball back to #0 momentarily.
Bro the strategy is so obvious the guy basically said why it’s happening; HES PERFECT FROM THE LINE HES OBVIOUSLY JUST DRAWING FOULS
ESPN has some of the most lopsided announcers
When he didn't pass out of a triple team, it was because he wanted to get fouled. If the lead was larger he would have passed to run clock. The game was still pretty close and his getting to the line---and making his FT's put the game out of reach.
As others have mentioned, he’d be pulled if he wasn’t doing what his coach was telling him. He has the green light.
Checkmate
"There are guys EVERYWHERE wide open" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
These guys did a really good job the first half. I think they were getting frustrated about how bad we were playing the last 4 mins
Exactly what a good PG should do! Manage the game and make the best decision. Announcer was way off! Lykes had 0 TO's this game!

Bro it was late game and he is great at the line, plus he didn’t even turn the ball over, these announcers are bozos
It’s smart, Chris is smart, Miss is smart, this announcer… not so much
He’s a great guard and free throw shooter
Couch must have given him the green light
We need to know the name of that announcer because clearly there is animosity.
“send another defender at him !! send another defender at him!!” you gotta be fuckin joking right 😂
These commentators haven't been paying attention to arkansas.
"He's fast and a deadly shooter", he maybe fast but a deadly shooter? I guess you missed the airball he threw up at the 0:14 mark
@@dttrumanhe is a deadly shooter. His stats for the game and season uphold this claim. Go read his stats and you'll see what I mean.

Outside of the first two shots… he did everything else perfectly
You can clearly see that lykes is indeed fully aware of what's going on and has good court awareness, he can draw those fouls etc he's doing with the coach tells him.
Being a small PG at this level , along with how the game has changed, that’s a darn hard job!!!

They can do it all they want. But we made the elite 8 and Kansas can have a bad season.
