Success in VHF/UHF contests requires three things: a good site, skilled operators and a high-performance contest station. In this talk Alwyn Seeds describe key considerations in building a high-performance contest station for the VHF/UHF bands including choice of aerials, receive system design to maximise dynamic range and transmit system design to give a clean signal which meets the requirements of the RSGB VHF/UHF Contest Code of Practice.
Alwyn Seeds, G8DOH was first licensed in 1970 and has been active in contesting on the VHF and UHF bands ever since, starting with a few watts of AM from a modified Pye Ranger on 2m and moving on through FM from a single 4X250B to current LDMOS amplifiers and multi-array systems. He can be heard on the bands, either from the home QTH in North Oxfordshire, IO92 or from JO01 with the Crawley and Reigate Contest Group G3M and G5LK/P.
Professionally, he works on microwave and THz systems and founded the wireless company Zinwave.
