I’ve backed 66 Kickstarter campaigns so far (Superbacker) 🎉 and I have seen my fair share of campaigns that have ranged from super smooth to a complete dumpster fire. I’m currently waiting on two that are over due and I’m not impressed with how both of these campaigns have been run. But, as you beautifully stated, there is a risk involved when backing a project. I just love being a part of seeing someone’s ideas and creative process come to life! So far I’ve gotten all of the items I’ve backed, and the positive and fun experiences far outweigh the bad! This is an excellent informative video for anyone considering backing or creating a project on the Kickstarter platform. Thank you for sharing, Lisa! 💌🎁
The "Present time!" effect might be one of my favourite things about Kickstarter. 😆 Not only did the money leave my bank account so long ago that it feels like it's free, but I've often forgotten what additional goodies I either added-on or were unlocked as stretch-goals. So opening the box can be full of surprises!
I backed my first deck on Kickstart a few weeks ago. I got the Victorian Faery Tarot and I'm so excited they added a cloth and some other goodies to the pledge ❤ can't wait to have it in hand! I almost bought the original for 2k! Happy to have it at a good price
I've backed 21 kickstarter projects, created 1 (about to create my second end of this summer). Most were smooth, 1 late, 1 I am still waiting on after 2 years (but there are still updates). As a backer it is important to me as a creator to have the work done first to make my timeline more real. Sometimes I back to support without a reward and sometimes with a reward
I’ve backed (far too) many kickstarter campaigns. Only two have had significant issues. It seems like both will be fulfilled in the end. I almost backed out of one before the kickstarter ended but decided to take the risk. I have decided not to back and I have pulled out of some that seemed dodgy. Most seemed to do fine. Others made me happy with my choice to step aside. Just as you suggest, I check out the creator and project thoroughly first. I am so glad I am not the only one who loves the surprise gift element of kickstarter! I often fill out the survey and then try to forget about it. When it shows up I get the excitement of fun mail! I seem to back kickstarters in waves so I really may not know what treasure I am about to unearth. As you said, the money was withdrawn long ago so it truly feels like a gift. Not financial advice but it does satisfy my heart. 💝
I bought some face masks before covid. Couldn’t believe my luck they were delivered about two weeks after covid restrictions came into play. Maybe you’ll need that thermometer in the future for The end of time
Years ago I lost a $114 backing something that never er materialized. It was before any kind of airbud style earbuds came out. They missed their date several times. Updates here and there, then nothing for two years then one last update and that was it.I tried to get info after that. I left comments and notes to both the Creater and Kickstarter through Kickstarter's email communication. Never got anything for $114. Soured me for.a few years and now I only back Tarot cards and the 3-4 I've done were all positive experiences. I thinks this is a great video. Don't let my story stop you from backing things. Just know that it happens.
This is so helpful for new people. I love Kickstarter but I had to learn my lessons the hard way. Although I will say I have gotten all of the decks I backed...some took a really long time. A couple of other projects...still waiting 😅. I don't expect to get my gift. Oh well lessons learned...my biggest lesson. The prototype needs to be finished or at least 2/3 finished. Tarot...if the only thing missing is the court cards of the last suit, no problem. If only the majors are done and it's not a majors only deck...I'll pause.
Good info for sure. I've backed 51 projects (many were decks, but not all -- also some books/ebooks, magazines, and games). I have only been disappointed a very few times, and these were instances where the final product was wildly different than what the campaign described in terms of production quality / specifications. I always back presuming nothing re: timeline because major delays can happen for so many reasons -- if it's late, I just don't care because I've backed it kind of assuming it will be and this doesn't bother me in the slightest. I like watching things come to life and looking forward to them, and would always prefer a creator take the time to get it right than scramble to make their 'estimated ship date' and cut corners.
Yesss, excellent and important points about the nature of Kickstarter and the platform as it is. Projects are there as a way to get them off the ground, as opposed to being a storefront. Thanks for making this, it's all really valuable info to keep in mind as backers (or even potential creators looking to crowdfund their projects). xx
Planning my first Kickstarter for an Oracle deck of my art. My art collection is 15 years in the making and I'm used to pulling money out of my pocket for products and then sitting on them for a long time. I'm grateful to have discovered this option and I want to be as detailed as possible to it can be a success. Thanks for the info!
I never got the infernal tarot deck …. The only one really bad experience, other than the one that taking a long time that were now expected to get in the fall. Hopefully we do get it now.
Great info 👍🏼 One additional thing is you can see on Kickstarter when is the last time the creator logged in. For the example you showed, the last time the creator logged in was the day the campaign was created. That’s a red flag and a good reason to cancel your pledge prior to the project ending. If they aren’t logging in throughout the campaign that tells me they don’t care about what’s going on and there’s a high probability that they won’t respond after the campaign.
I love this, you have no idea how helpful this video was for me. I’m an illustrator and I’ve very recently been seriously mulling over the idea of illustrating my own oracle deck. I’m in the research process, trying to find info on good printers. I myself am a regular Kickstarter patron and the very thought of using it as a creator seemed a little daunting. This clears up a bit of my fears, concerns, and questions. I truly feel a pull to get this deck done and I think there could really be a niche market for it. This was helpful in seeing Kickstarter as a very real avenue to look into as a creator. Many thanks, Lisa!
That’s super cool! You should def think about putting it out there. I’ve not run a campaign before, so grain of salt. I’ve backed a lot of them and I think communication goes a long way. Being up front in the campaign itself and having info and context to begin with, then once it’s up and running, updates and comments. It seems most ppl are receptive to this and are more willing to go thru bumps and learning with you if they know what’s going on. I’ve mostly been lucky, but there’s been a cpl times where had it not been a wellish known creator, we would have been way more freaked. They didn’t communicate very well and it was frustrating. I really hope you can put your deck into the world tho! 😊
Hello Lisa! thank you so much for all the bubbling! You give me so much courage to start my thing . I designed and wrote my very first oracle deck called "The Book of shadows oracle deck. To me it looks amazing and i put so much effort to it working tirelessly to create a cohesive and useful insight and connections between the symbols and meanings of the cards. i have now got to the point on how to publish it and make it available to everyone who could spiritually profit from it and that is how i got to your video. I am about to lunch a campaign on kickstarter and your "bubbling" helped me a lot with some of the information i needed. Thank you!
Love this. I’ve backed a lot of decks and mostly had good experiences, but a cpl times it wasn’t the greatest. From a consumer standpoint, just do your due diligence and make the most informed decision you can. From a creator standpoint, just communicate. Make a clear outline in your campaign itself, then put out updates. Ppl just wanna know what’s happening. I def agree with you, Lisa. It is like getting a present. After I know it’s gtg and things are happening, I try to forget about it so it’s super magical when I come home and this incredible thing is there for you. Thanks for doing this for the less familiar folx. Great video as always ❤
HI Lisa, I am just wanting to share a thought. As I love it when a creator adds this to the deck. A "Bookmark" with purchase. We all read wether its a tarot book or a novel etc. A Bookmarks with a deck when I receive them really reminds me about using my deck. I get comments from friends where I got the bookmark at times. Its just a thought for when you get to doing your deck in the future. Guidebooks you can touch not PDF and bookmarks are always a treat for me. and I just wanted to share with you. Take Care Terri from Australia. 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
Tons of valuable information here Lisa. Thank you so much! I have had one Kickstarter where they took off with the money and cancelled all their social media accounts and there is an attorney involved in it, however I have backed lots of decks at this point and that is the only one I haven't received as of this point, so not too bad of a track record. 😍
This is a great video Lisa! Kickstarter is a really interesting place. I've backed many projects and only ever been burned once (on puzzles). But there are also creators I will never back again for a variety of reasons. Whether it be being snarky or combative with backers in the comments, or things shaking out in kind of a shady way, even if I like their stuff I avoid. I do think the relationship between backers and creators can be a very intense one and can bring out some not so positive attitudes on both sides. Which is really unfortunate, but I think while backers need to be patient and understanding, creators also need to realize their backers gave them money, often a lot of it, and deserve to have some expectations of open and respectful communication. I have a couple of decks close to fulfillment I may not keep once they arrive because the way the creators treated backers soured the joy. In one instance, the creator has been extremely rude in comments and updates (basically calling backers stupid/illiterate multiple times), keeps emphasizing KS is not a store, but then charged backers sales tax after the end of the campaign. If it's not a store and we didn't buy anything...hmmm. Then they tried to change aesthetic details of the deck long after the end of the campaign, details that were stretch goals. No reason was provided other than that they just thought it might look nice. I understand production changes but otherwise, it was quite stressful. Another creator fulfilled the deck quickly and was otherwise very pleasant but then shortly after we got decks, listed the deck on Amazon for about 10 dollars less than backers paid, which is their right but felt bad. I also think that because KS takes a cut of campaign funds, they really do have more responsibility to be involved when backers get scammed. I'm not sure how, but that they take their cut and wash their hands of it really makes me pause. I do the same thing as you where I keep up with updates but otherwise keep in mind the money is gone and the thing will hopefully show up eventually. I try to stay a bit emotionally detached from the process so that I'm not wasting my energy and exercise my patience muscles. When things show up, it's like a gift to myself! I love KS but I do think there are things the platform could improve on for everyone. I'm currently on a backing break until I get some stuff in (don't like to have too much outstanding), but love seeing peoples immense creativity and drive to get their vision out into the world.
I wish I watched this a few months ago. I back the Purple Dream art Tarot and there are so many red flags. No updates. no social media. no backing history. no previous campaigns. now I’m annoyed. I also stayed updated with your Maven Tarot updates, so I should’ve known this for myself 😂
This was so informative, thank you!! I just started on Kickstarter a couple months ago & still really didn’t get it until this video. Every day I have been checking on The Radiant Millennial Tarot (Lisa Frank vibes!) & the My Feelings deck to see if they're going to make it.. it's very exciting but stressful 😅! Great video, thank you 💖
I've backed quite a lot of campaigns and I'd say 95% or so work out fine, albeit sometimes coming in a bit later than originally anticipated. I've had three that either have already proven to be a loss or may prove yet to be - one non tarot related art project and two decks. Like you said, it's a risk but one that is normally more than worthwhile. Of the two or three I've had problems with none would have had the red flags you listed though - not to say they aren't real red flags as the obviously are - but just to show in the end a risk is a risk either way you cut it I suppose. The art project I supported seemed the real deal - right down to hearing regular updates on a related podcast and the artists seemed genuinely excited but the physical rewards never seemed to make it outside of the US for some reason - allegedly because of a fall out in the group of creators involved..so..it's interesting. Anyway, thank you so much for this video - it's a brilliant overview of the risks and very real rewards of Kickstarter. :)
Thank you so much for doing this. I have been waiting for this video. I have purchased kick starter deck over time. But I just dive in, not really understanding what I am doing half the time. I cross my finger and toes that I will receive the deck etc. This is so helpful. I have requested this in the past. Thank you, Thank you , Thank you ...Terri from Australia. 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
very timeley as i've been thinking of doing this. i'm worried though as i really want the delta enduring tarot but looking at the kickstarter community section for it, the communication seems to have been missing with people not knowing where they stood as it was being made. That kind of thing troubles me. It's not available as a deck any more anyway but it's a warning.
Still waiting on Wisdom of the Crow from 2021. Thankfully all the other KS campaigns have been great, but this was the 1st one I ever funded. The creator says the deck is at the printer for a month now so I guess there's still hope...just such a horrible experience overall. Anyone else here back this campaign?
Nice! That was so well spread out in detail. Being a geek myself, this spoke my flow😂 so to speak . No idea how else to say a lot, in a sentence or two.
100% agree on present time! I love surprise packages haha. There is one project that I backed a long time ago that I'm pretty sure I will never receive (it was a campaign to buy a lathe for a fountain pen maker with the promise of a pen in return), but that's the only one that I've been burned on. However, I know that Kickstarter is always a bit of a risk, and I have received SO many wonderful projects over the years, so I think that overall it balances out!
I wish I had this information the first time I backed a project on Kickstarter. It was the Dark Reflections Tarot Deck by La Musi. It started last year in October, and it was funded within hours. I received the deck at the end of June. The creator will send a report every two weeks. She created a Facebook group, too. The second project is a Book of Wisper by Cocorrina. It was founded fast. The creator sends reports once a month. But both are from established online businesses. Thank you for this very informative video. 💜
I've backed 10 or 11 Kickstarter campaigns and in two campaigns, a few very vocal backers have begged the creators, apparently in personal messages, to change something significant about the product. The rest of us didn't know that the changes were made and the product would be different until the next update was sent out and the time to drop out had passed. 😕
Lisa thanks SO much for all this info. Kickstarter has seemed like a scary window that I have been looking through as an outsider.. and I have missed out on some beautiful decks because I didn’t know how to get in on the processes.
Super helpful video. You also helped share on your hot takes better about looking into campaigns on kickstarter. I'm still waiting on a deck it's been 1 1/2 years & supposed to ship this August it was the first one I backed so its been a long wait. I've backed a few more since & received them already. It's nice to choose just the deck or add on other items. I thought I got charged twice on one project but it turned out to be a pending charge that only went through once they were shipping.
For some reason I got really invested in that Kakapo park tarot and it had only hit it's funding goal by like one decks worth of money so in it's last hour I literally sat there just in case someone decided to drop out and I needed to add a second deck really quick 😂 My wife and I are also mostly board game backers and it really does feel like a holiday when you walk outside and are surprised by a giant box. Also if your ever looking for something like your hot takes but for board games, there's a creator called "room and board" that does a series called crowdfunding countdown that I watch every week.
I'm tracking a Demon Tarot deck on Kickstarter but the backing seems slow. I like to back once certain Stretch Goals are met but this one still needs to read it's Base goal. I'm really hoping things pick up. My first deck was Shawn Coss and it's an amazing deck.
Hi, I am an artist and thinking of creating a Tarot deck. What advice do you have for someone who has not done this before? I already know a lot about Tarot and own a lot of decks, so I have the background in both art and Tarot.
How does one *hear* about these projects? Is there a resource with the info all in one place? Or can the KS website be used to see 'upcoming' projects?
You can search "tarot" or "oracle" and t hen sort by new if you want to browse currently funding projects! :) I also make a video called Hot Takes on Upcoming Tarot and Oracle deck releases every month highlighting currently funding kickstarters (as well as mass market and indie preorders)
@@Lisa_Papez Oooh, thank you so much Lisa, I'll check out those videos. I must admit, I don't know anything about the Kickstarter website, so this video was super-useful :D
Ahhh I have a pretty good number of board games and Peggy doesn't geek out on them to the degree I do - I need to make some local board game friends LOL but in the meantime, mine languish a bit sos I'm not adding to the collection for the time being LOL ... which is a really long winded to say No I haven't LOL
I was curious so I checked my account and I've backed 104 projects since 2017. I haven't been burned in a big way, but there have been a few projects that I'm skeptical whether they'll ever happen, because they're 1-2 years late and have stopped communicating. That said, I've backed things like that and they eventually came through. Honestly, I kind of assume in a lot of those cases that the person is wallowing in shame and lack of spoons and doesn't know what to do, and I feel for them ❤Maybe I'm a little naive, but I guess my whole anti-capitalist / neuroemergent worldview is kind of always seeing the ways in which shitty systemic stuff can be at the root of harm, and people can both be justifiably frustrated and the creator in a position that I have a lot of compassion for.
ps - I totally agree with you on preference for art being done, and that's a much safer bet, but I also think it sucks that artists are often expected to do a ton of labor with no promise of support, and probably that model means that folks who don't have family support or a well-paying job that doesn't take up all of their time can't do decks. Maybe Patreon is more the place for this than Kickstarter, but I at least really like the IDEA of supporting someone to be able to a project they couldn't otherwise do while working a full-time job. Someone suggested that idea to me to fund writing a book and I was pretty tempted!
I relate. This was my first (and only deck) I have ever backed. I don't know if I will ever get this deck, but I won't ever back a deck again. My budget is to tight for the cost and risk.
I think Lisa does this video because of this. A lot of us backed our 1st Kickstarter after seeing the deck on her channel, and she must have received a great deal of negative feedback about it.
Mistakes were definitely made with this campaign, which is disappointing for sure - but this experience has not soured me on other creators projects because every creator handles their project differently.
@@AM-ji5pi Thankfully, no one has directed any negativity at me, personally, about this campaign. I'm a backer like everyone else, so I totally get the frustration. Unfortunately, there's no way to know how a campaign is going to go until it... well... goes!
Very helpful public service announcement. I've only participated in one Kickstarter (most recent Serpent and Peacock) and it was a wonderful experience with a fab deck at the end. But it's important to understand terms and know how to gauge the risks. Thank you, Lisa!
I backed this on KS and the creator just disappeared!!! So I lost out, first time I've experienced this.. Magical World Of Cats illustrated Tarot Of Real Cats Created by Karla Franco 44 backers pledged MX$ 29,749 to help bring this project to life. Last updated June 7, 2022
Sorry to hear this. Your story certainly makes me much more wary from now on. I had a near miss one time only and eventually the deck became available much later and I was able to purchase it.
I am a naturally fast talker, unfortunately. ;) But UA-cam has a little gear icon you can click on the videos to reduce the speed of the video! :) You could try that and see if it helps.
Interesting timing for this video since we got our newest update letter from Murphy Pines the creator of IM HERE - The Emotional Care Deck. I was going along fine knowing how she used our funds for her personal life and she was diligently trying to raise more money to get her and our project done. OK fine I get the pitfalls. However, our letter from yesterday says she plans to sell decks now to buyers rather than send them out to Backers. to me this is a con game. She cannot legally sell decks to new buyers to raise funds to ship decks to her backers. That is when this becomes a PONZI SCHEME. If she has decks, they belong to the people who have already paid for them. Once you sell them to someone else and plan to use those funds to be able to ship to the people who have already bought the decks, that is where the problem arises. If the project just failed and she mishandled all of her backer money Ok backers shit out of luck. But she continues to try to get money from people. I hear you Lisa, the glitch here is that there are decks, she wants to sell them to people who are not backers THAT IS THE CON.as I see it. I have been sooooooo patient this has completely soured me to Kickstarter
I don't think anyone is conning anyone - if that were the case, I don't think Murphy would be so forthcoming about where things went wrong. It seems clear to me that mistakes were made but that they're doing everything they feel they can to make it right. I do totally understand your frustration. I would say that it's incredibly likely that Murphy ordered more decks from the printer than the number needed to fulfill to backers - and so them selling/preordering those extras out to raise funds to get the Kickstarter back on track may not be the perfect solution, but I think it's a sensible one. With that said, though, I totally understand that, as a backer, it doesn't feel good at all. I definitely sympathize with how you're feeling
Thank you Lisa. I really wanted to give her the leeway to recover from her very poor business decisions. The previous update letter said there was a printing problem and everything needed reprinting. Then next she has decks to sell to raise funds. Basically I want to give her the benefit of the doubt and trust her good intentions. I’ve also only ever had good results with Kickstarter because I’ve followed your wonderful advice. Like you said, I’ll just forget about it and maybe someday I’ll be surprised to get her package in my mailbox. Thank you so much for even responding to my hot air. Thank you for giving this advice video to our community.
Lmao I would have backed a few more projects if I knew that if the goal wasn’t reached I wouldn’t lose the money 🫣 my fault of course for not researching properly but still 😊😊 that takes some of the scare away 😊

I consider crowdfunding in similar terms to patronage in Renaissance Europe. You have the money to spend, so you are using it to support an artist.

I have had this question for so so long!!!! I have always been too worried about backing a project...thank you ❤❤❤
Your vlogs are always informative. Thank you.
Thank you for this video Lisa! I recently backed my first Kickstarter and I found your video very helpful!
80 kickstarters down , I’ve been lucky thus far.
Maybe it's not just luck -- maybe you're good at choosing which creators to back.
I wish I watched this a few months ago. I back the Purple Dream art Tarot and there are so many red flags. No updates. no social media. no backing history. no previous campaigns. now I’m annoyed. I also stayed updated with your Maven Tarot updates, so I should’ve known this for myself 😂
Lots of great info here. Thanks so much. ❤
Thank you for this video Lisa!! Very educational and a great resource for everyone!
I just watch you. If you say it’s ok , I go in . If not I don’t, I’m perfectly fine if you do a kickstart tarot review. ❤️
So helpful! The last couple of decks I've backed haven't met the goal, so I need to go find those creators websites. Also. I LOVE your shirt!
Thanks for the informative video!
Still surprised at I'm Here ....still waiting,
I wish I had this information the first time I backed a project on Kickstarter.
I like getting the indie on KS before it goes mass market and the cardstock goes to crap.
Lisa, are you going to use KS for your deck?
That's the plan!
I’m curious, what deck did you not receive after preordering it?
Great video!! I love the surprise in my mailbox too😅
I've backed 10 or 11 Kickstarter campaigns and in two campaigns, a few very vocal backers have begged the creators, apparently in personal messages, to change something significant about the product.
Oh Lisa thank you so much for this information, it has helped me so much.
Love your channel and vibe.
Great video! But now that I know you’re a fellow board game nerd I have to ask - have you backed any of the CMON campaigns or the Gloomhaven campaign?
After seeing how the "I'm here" oracle was handled and how mismanaged the collected funds were, I'm so skeptical to use Kickstarter
Magical World Of Cats

Sorry to hear this. Your story certainly makes me much more wary from now on. I had a near miss one time only and eventually the deck became available much later and I was able to purchase it.
Thank you for this one! I only wish you would talk a little slower in all the Videos.
