Thefts from vehicles can happen anywhere and sooner or later you could be affected by these criminal acts. Car burglaries are crimes of opportunity and are usually committed by thieves looking for anything that looks valuable left in your car.
Notice I said “looks valuable”. I had a recent victim of a auto break-in tell me he could not believe someone broke his car window to steal a duffle bag full of 20 baseballs from his kids little league team or another victim who told me the thief took a briefcase full of promotional key chains. When it comes to your property the thief doesn’t speculate what is inside, he hopes for the best and goes for it! Hence the terms “smash and grab”.
One of the most effective means of deterring this crime is the obvious one of removing your perceived valuables from your car or locking them in your vehicle trunk. Anything that can be removed should be. Leaving things like purses, briefcases, computers, GPS units, cell phones, and money visible in a car is like hanging out a sign that says, “EASY TARGET HERE! TAKE MY STUFF!” It doesn’t matter if you’re in New York City or Newburg, Wisconsin if the opportunity is there a car burglary will likely occur at some point.
In summary, never leave anything looking valuable visible, lock them in the trunk or take them with you. Park your vehicle in a safe area and lock it!
