This is the first video I've seen of yours, though far from my first fantasy booktuber video. I just have to say, I love the "here's all the math and justification of why I ranked things the way I did" followed immediately by "throw that all out, because here is what my heart says". I feel that! Happy to be a new subscriber, and I'm looking forward to seeing more!
@@jakebishop7822 Definitely looking forward to seeing more. I have to say I bounced off the Dresden Files pretty hard, and I haven't read Sun Eater yet, but otherwise I love the others you mentioned and it's great to see someone talk about them with such passion.
I could've guessed several of these, but I enjoyed the presentation immensely! I haven't read any Dresden books, but I love what you said about how Butcher started the series not having a significant skill but constantly improved on each one throughout the series. Sounds heroic and inspiring!
THANK YOU for showing love to the Burning books. I adore them too and I agree the second one is better simply because we get to see Tau have a deeper inner monologue and more complex relationships around him
Great video! Love seeing Dresden Files so high up! Jim Butcher is one of my favorite authors. I even enjoyed Codex Alera. Also you’re spot on about Suneater. In the middle of reading that now and it hits all the marks.
Jake - this was brilliantly done. Take a bow. I’m especially glad you pushed back on the prose issue for both Sanderson & Butcher. The job of prose is to tell the story. They should not be built to admire on their own. Some books need the flow of elegant prose, others need efficiency. The latter is not lesser. Always, always prose should serve, not lead. It’s really just that simple. You hit that hard and I’m glad to hear it. Thank you.
Great video. ASOIAF is my favorite series and A Storm of Swords is my all time favorite single book in any series or stand alone. You definitely owe it to yourself to re-read this at an older age. Its not really a series I see teenagers reading and getting into as its fairly complex with lots of characters etc. as you well know. I've read a lot over the past 30 years but I still have lots to read, including some on your list here. I'm currently reading Project Hail Mary to break up the Abercrombie books of which I've read The First Law trilogy and BSC and loved them. I'll finish Project Hail Mary then move on to The Heroes, and the rest from there. I have The Suneater and The Stormlight Archive on my TBR list and can't wait to get to them. Thanks for the great video.
an ASOIAF reread is definitely going to happen! I'm honestly even more excited for A Feast For Crows, because past me already loved ASOS(although I expect to like it even more), but I think AFFC will improve the most on reread
Took me two tries to get through A Game of Thrones. I think I tried in 7th grade (so like 12) and it was too boring. Tried again in 9th grade and loved all of them. But definitely something you work your way up to, like it's not your next step after Redwall.
I really enjoyed this video. A bit heavy on the fantasy side admittedly, but I now have 3 new book series I need to check out when I have the chance. I’m curious if you’ve ever found a good sci/fantasy series that’s caught your interest.
Thanks. Both of my favorite sci fi series are kinda sci fantasy. I often find the line between the 2 genre's can be quite blurred. One is The Sun Eater which I talked about here, and have described as an epic that happens to take place in a future human empire, and the other is The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe which will be on my completed series list.
I was getting angry that Sun Eater was so low, and then I saw your top 2 and realize things were exactly as they should be. We may not be a majority these days but I’m right with you on loving the Burning! You’re not crazy! Love your detailed scoring systems!

Not related to the video at all, but i just listened to a discussion you were on a couple of years ago, talking about "Best served cold" by Joe abercrombie. You kept bringing up the fact that Cosca threw a knife that chopped a dudes head off as a reason for not liking the book. You did it so many times that it botherd me so much that i had to make a comment on your latest video in hopes of you seeing it . Cosca's knife that he threw did not chop the dudes head of, he chopped the dudes head of with his sword. "It was him that Cosca flung his knife at. It twittered through the air and thudded into the young man's side, doubling him over. Cosca charged in behind it, aiming for the chest. Perhaps the boy leaned forwards, or perhaps Cosca's aim was wayward, but the blade caught the officer's neck and, in a spectacular justification of all the sharpening, took his head clean off." . Thanks for reading my psycho rant about a comment you made 2 years ago, ted talk over.
Yes you are right, I am aware I read that bit incorrectly. Found out like a few months ago and did indeed feel very dumb. Still don't like the book, because that didn't actually move the needle that much, it was that I didn't care what happened to anyone not named Shivers.
3:25 Are you wearing a golf shirt? 5:58 Also, I totally hear you on the doing absurd amounts of mental effort into something just to not actually use it enough to justify said effort.😅
It's a shirt that was purchased from a golf store, not a shirt meant to be worn golfing. I kinda used it. I didn't have a system, but it helped me make the list

@@jakebishop7822 I suppose it might be because I had a reduced amount of time for reading from the early 2000's. I'm trying to fill in the gaps in my reading now.
If you liked Sun Eater why did you turn up the already too loud and too repetitive music? I cannot really hear what you think about since the repetitive bad music is louder that what you are saying? Of the five series Sun Eater is by far the most loud. Its bad music and a short repeat. Get rid of the music or turn is down a LOT for all of them and don't turn it way up for one of them ever.
Ya, I've accidentally done this a couple times, because when I listen to it, I know what I said, so it is really easy to tell what I said. The same way if you listen to a song you haven't heard with the lyrics in front of you, you can hear all the words distinctly, and it is hard to imagine hearing the song and not being able to tell what the words are. That or I secretly hate The Sun Eater and wanted to obscure the nice things I said about it, whatever.
