  • Oregon State and Washington State are trying to remain as competitive as they can in a College Football landscape that has (foolishly) left them behind. There is some recent precedent to indicate their scheduling plans could be enough to compete in a 12-team College Football Playoff.
    On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin looks at some of the next steps for OSU and WSU. Oregon State HC Trent Bray has made his offensive coordinator hire, what should Beaver fans make of Ryan Gunderson? 14:30
    Both teams are seeking to learn who their quarterbacks will be for 2024 with all the options from this year's teams in the transfer portal. What sorts of transfer names could each school have looking ahead to next year? 22:10

    Call me bitter if you want, but continuing the Civil War is a bad choice. It's not the same when we aren't in the same conference and holding the game in September when the students aren't there is absurd. Not to mention we are helping out Oregon with the travel issues that come from being in the BIG, we are essentially letting them have their cake and eat it too. Add in the disparity in talent and revenue and it's just a joke. We should be scheduling any P5 team BUT UO, UW, USC, etc to try and stay relevant.

      Definitely. The unfortunate reality is we are in need of bodybag games now. It is sad but true. We should NOT be bodybagging for schools that had a hand in creating the reality we are living in! If we are going to take a beat down, might as well be from Ohio State, or Michigan, or Texas. Anyone but the schools who shivved us in their stampede to leave us holding the bag.

      Is there any reason you think the game would not sell out in September, even without students on campus?
      It’s not going to be easy for either OSU or WSU to get P5 teams on campus. Getting a team to agree to an annual high-profile home-and-home makes total sense.

    Spencer as of now the 12 team playoff is still a 6-6 simply because the board has not voted to make the change. Is it fair 🤷‍♂️. Also if as you suggest the PAC is no longer a P5/4, then what are they? Certainly not G5, they don’t belong to a G5 conference. Why can’t they be treated like Notre Dame? They are not in a P5/4 conference but, they are still considered at that level.

      Who are these "dudes" we have coming in? Yes, I have no doubt we'll get some new solid guys, so if our coaches are good we'll develop them as we have everyone else because outside of Aidan Chiles the Beavs never really get 4-5 Star Recruits. MWC = WAC in the not distant future and it was never quite up to PAC levels but they did have some decent teams with awful refs.. I think it is WAY WAY WAY too easy for players and coaches bailing on a whim. The portal and allowing coaches to negotiate and leave after week 5 should be prohibited by NCAA rule. You fire your coach and need one for the last half of the season, hire from within or hire someone not active. I wouldn't let them even start talking till JAN 15th and maybe that would slow some of this down. I would shift the portal till after the damn bowls are over. There are 1100 in the portal plus. We are looking at a bunch of bowls with shells of the teams they played the season with in a lot of cases. Do you think I feel like the bowl games will be realistically watchable when your main players on both sides of the ball have pulled the plug on your team for greener pastures.. NCAA are you listening? As for MWC.. Call it.. the PACWAC

    Not sure if schedule matters at all if talent is leaving save Martinez and no big replacements are coming. Coach who built this left, both big time QBs leaving, big TE leaving and most importantly their offensive front line beasts that helped defined Beaver football this year in Fuaga and Gray going to the NFL draft. Brutal. I know I interjected no big replacements are coming as sort of a fact which it isn't yet but it is most likely.

      Yeah the talent loss is staggering and recruiting is really going to be tough I think Beaver Nation will have to have patience not expect miracles next season. One ray of hope I have that I haven't heard talked about yet is the possibility of Stanford and Cal coming back home from the ACC in a couple of years if the ACC implodes. They only made that move because they had no place else to go but it was never a fit that made sense otherwise. At least it's a possibility who knows what the college football landscape will look like going forward it's all insane.

    • @baileym4708
      @baileym4708 9 місяців тому

      @@jameshoover3703- yeah, I would think that is a possibility but the way Cal and Stanford view their football programs now, not sure if they are any better than mist the Mountain West teams. Cal showed up this season to their credit but historical (recent) have been bad. Stanford lost to Sacramento St. Yet with that, it definitely would hurt or be any worse. I don't know but I wonder if these conference add additional teams will they start kicking out teams? If so then that would be an opportunity to get former power 5 teams in a conference but they will be the weakest ones so I don't know if that will bring any respect to the Beave's conference.

    It seems like there is an opportunity for schools like OSU and WSU to recruit top talent because they can play for one year then transfer out to the SEC or B1G. I have heard rumors that Washington St and Oregon St may end up with most of their sports teams, including baseball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, rowing and possibly even softball playing the next couple years in the West Coast Conference similar to what BYU did when BYU was independent in football. Oregon St and Washington St could even have basketball in the WCC, especially if Gonzaga is still there. The travel expenses would be the best option of all of the potential options, while they are figuring out what happens with the future of the Pac-12. Is there any truth the rumors of Washington St and Oregon St settling several of their sports in the WCC for the next couple of years?

    • @DocSkirv
      @DocSkirv 9 місяців тому

      Some of the sky is falling responses here are a little premature. Yeah, things are not good. But within a couple of years, or less, the ACC will implode. And the SEC, Big 10 and perhaps big 12 will have huge revenue demands from their premier programs. At that time, those conferences will look at the KStates, Wake Forests, Houstons, of the world and think about jettisoning them. It is “woe is me” for Beavs and Cougs now….but it’s coming for dozens of programs in the next 24 months. This is bad, but it’s also opportunity. Those schools will need a new home in Oregon State and Washington state ban together with some of them and cobble together a pretty good conference.

    Beaver fan here (for 4 decades). This thing is not only getting out of hand but the ship is starting to completely sink now! 6 guys leaving for the portal! Lots are graduating. A few are going to the NFL. And now we're left with a completely unproven (and looks to mainly be just Beaver Alums) staff that has to not only put together a overall plan but they need to; recruit/ maintain current recruits! I'm sorry, but hiring your DC as the HC and losing 6 guys (3 are top tier defender) in the portal within a few days, not good enough! That's why they apparently hired Bray and they're still hemorrhaging key players (backfire). A guy like Jeff Tedford or even Paul Chryst could have brought in quality assistants (through years of contacts) and with all of these losses, they can recruit good players but here's the key..... They have been through the rebuild process before and JT has been INCREDIBLY successful! I'll guarantee you that a guy like Tedford could have brought several players in from Fresno St and possibly other schools to fill holes. He is also one of, if not the most revered QB Coach/ Offensive minded guy over the last 20 years.
    Lesson to all fans! Never fall in love with a coach! Unfortunately, this is trickling down to players (nowadays). It's all completely fake when any of these guys say, "we're in this together", "it's about the team".... Bullshit! As long as things are going exactly the way they want, sure! The moment adversity arises, hell no! They're gone! College Football is an absolute fucking joke right now!

      @@hotdangers Unclear revenue? Smith owes money on his contract still! The University (OS) was offering Smith near $6 a year for his new deal. The lawsuit in the PAC 12 will be bringing some form of money in (Big or Huge)?! The MW is including us in their TV deal (as an independent) which is around $14 Million. There are boosters still giving to the football program. The argument of not having enough "revenue" to commit to a "proven coach", just doesn't hold water. There's an old adage that stands the test of time, even today. Ya get what ya pay for. The jury on Bray and his staff is still out, yes! But he still doesn't even have a full staff!
      Listen, I love Coach Bray! In fact, I feel sorry for the guy. I honestly do not think he truly wanted the job to be honest! I think he wanted to stay on as a defensive coordinator. Please remember that he has only had 2 seasons as a coordinator previous to being hired as the HC. The other guys (Alum that have been brought in so far) have 0-1 year exp. and the "1 year" is as a position coach. These guys all have experience under the same guy as players, Mike Riley. But the biggest problem is the lack of recruiting contacts. Who has Texas? Florida? Midwest? If you look at a lot of the stars from last season's team, they are from those areas (mainly). West Coast recruits are not enough to be competitive
      This is becoming a shit show and unfortunately, I don't think the exodus of players is over yet. I hope I'm wrong!

    So, it seems the problem isn't the size of the playoff bracket but rather the metrics by which teams are evaluated. Here's an idea, structure the playoffs in a similar manner to the NY6 bowls that it's going to replace with conference tie-ins. What would save the Pac-12 as a conference? 2 guaranteed spots in the playoffs. Schools and players will be tripping over themselves trying to get admitted. 2 spots per P5 conference leaves 2 at-large spots for the inevitable undefeated mid-major and/or independent. Also would do a lot to temper anti-SEC sentiments that have been building since the birth of the BCS.
